The Soul Eaters are the secondary antagonistic faction of the 2021 superhero movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
They are a race of ancient aliens that attacked the Earth led by Dweller-In-Darkness and attempted to conquer it by eating the souls of its inhabitants. They were stopped, however, by the people of the magical village of Ta Lo and the Great Protector, and then were sealed before a gate, and were only freed centuries later, by the Mandarin, to have their final confrontation with the people of Ta Lo, along with Mandarin's children, Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing.
Personality
Similar to the Deviants, from the marvel movie, Eternals, the Soul Eaters don't appear to have much of a personality aside being mindless predators. The fact, however, that the Dweller-In-Darkness was able to manipulate The Mandarin with his deepest feelings to free him and the other Soul Eaters, may show that they have (or at leat the Dweller-In-Darkness has) consiouness, and a mischievous and manipulative personality.
Biography
Centuries ago, the unnamed race of aliens knwon only as the Soul Eaters arrieved in Earth, and tried, under the command of the most powerful of them all, the Dweller-In-Darkness, to conquer that planet and feed from the souls of the people that lived there. However, they were stopped by the people of the legendary, magical village, Ta Lo, that, with the help of powered up weapons by a dragon known as the Great Protector, and the Great Protector itself, defeated the Soul Eaters and selaed them behind a magical gate. They stayed there for much time, until the Dweller-In-Darkness found himself able to stabilish a mental connection with a man named Xu Wanwu, also known as the Mandarin, and used his miss of his wife along with the sadness of said loss to manipulate him, by pretending to be his wife and copying her voice, and making him believe that she was behind the gate where the Soul Eaters were. The Mandarin went on a journey to find a way to get to Ta Lo and destroy the gate with his Ten Rings to free what he thinks that is his "wife".
Using the destructive power of the legendary Ten Rings, Mandarin was able to take down the gate's magical defenses, and make it possible to the Soul Eaters to escape, forcing the Ten Rings and the People of Ta Lo, that were fighting each other, to reunite themselves, to defeat the Soul Eaters, as their weapons were useless agaibst them. Only after the Death Dealer had his soul pulled out of him and eaten, Razor Fist, the second in command of the Ten Rings accepeted to unite with Ta Lo. The Dweller-In-Darkness emerged, but was fought by the Great Protector, and, despite almost winning, was weakaned by an arrow shot by Shang-Chi's friend, Katy, and was ultimately defeated by the Great Protector and Shang-Chi, ending the Soul Eaters forever.
