"To make an era for the delinquents", we share the same ideals about that. So I came here to Tokyo just to defeat the Tokyo Manji Gang. To have you retire now is unforgivable! The strongest stays the strongest even after they got eaten and killed, It's a Dog-Eat-Dog World out there! Work under me! Or Die right now! That's the only choice you got now Draken!
~ South expressing his desires and ideals while threatening Draken to join Rokuhara Tandai.
Vivo!
~ South's famous catchphrase.

Minami Terano, also known as South Terano (or South for short), is a major antagonist in the 2017 Japanese manga series, Tokyo Revengers. South is the violent, sadistic, and homicidal leader of Rokuhara Tandai and one of the "Three Deities" (alongside Mikey and Senju Kawaragi) and the former leader of the Dino South Gang when he was originally from Brazil. He serves as one of the main antagonists (alongside Mikey) of the Three Deities Arc, one of the two parts in the final story arc of the series.

South was originally from Brazil, where he has been raised by his surrogate father, Dino, into learning the benefits of violence and the ways of being a gangster when he was young. He later killed his mentor and took over his gang through inheritance, which then he moves to Japan once he lost both his parents.

While he was in juvenile detention, South forcibly made the former members of Tenjiku join his gang and formed the Rokuhara Tandai. Upon hearing of Tokyo Manji Gang's reputation and disbandment, he desires to become the strongest of the strong in Japan.

Appearance[]

South is explicitly taller in terms of height, almost as tall as Taiju Shiba. He also has a muscular appearance and a large tattoo resembling some kind of creature right on top of the right side of his face all the way down to his right shoulder and chest, which also made a numerous number of scars, and has his hair shaved except for the top as it was bundled into a top knot.

He is mostly seen wearing the signature Rokuhara Tandai uniform, which the color is consisted of being mostly red in general. The uniform consisted of a buttoned jacket with pocket holders, a white belt (unlike most of the members seen wearing black belts), baggy pants, and white leather boots.

Personality[]

South is described to be of utmost horrific in terms of his intimidating presence and tremendous strength. He is sadistic, violent, arrogant, and is known to have a highly short temper when it comes to intolerating those who are weak, especially when having to be provoked easily.

South has confidence and a strong desire to stand out as the strongest amongst those who he considers as "weak" in general, to which he formed what he thought to be the strongest gang by forcing the former members of Tenjiku to join his side. He is also unreasonably and incredibly cruel to others, same with his own subordinates (who he forced to join Rokuhara Tandai), having no problem inflicting pain on them or onto others. He is also not one to be above murder with no remorse.

Despite his sadistic and cruel nature, he does happen to have a sincere passion for music, namely classical ones that involved Italian ones as he namely mentions music references and shouts them out when fighting against his opponents as his way of taunting them. This is shown to be a part of his habit due to having a piano he used to entertain himself throughout his childhood.

Another fact to know about South is that he is shown to be mentally ill due to specific reasons regarding how he was raised by his surrogate father and mentor, Dino. Because of having to embrace the homicidal intent throughout his childhood, South ended up having to obtain "Dark Urges", which is similar to Mikey's case, except he embraced his sadistic tendencies willingly. Because of Dino's teachings, he is the reason South became the cruel, intimidating sadist he is today.

However, even when having to kill his mentor, South is indicated to have some humanizing features in a brief manner. It was shown that he killed his father figure in tears with "love" and he calmly explains his past when beaten by Benkei and Waka, most importantly his mother's death when he mentioned her while showing his gun wound, implying that he cared for her. Even though this seems genuine, they were played briefly as South shuns off any humanity in him as he goes back to being the sadist he is and there isn't much detail if he did ever love them. However, given how emotional it seemed for his mother's death, it indicates that he must've loved her back then and it badly affected him to have such struggles.

Overall, despite what seems to be his only, yet slight, redeeming quality. South lacked empathy and nevertheless is incredibly beyond help as he fully embraces his own set of "dark urges" simply because of his twisted love for violence.

Synopsis[]

Past[]

South's introduction to violence (manga)

One of South's first victims while being taught under Dino's care.

South's story began all the way back from his childhood. He was a Japanese Brazilian who lived in the slums of Brazil's Favella with his bedridden mother that did not have the strength to take care of or even raise the boy, as all he did throughout his childhood was to play his piano. His life took a turn when Dino, a Brazilian gangster, became his mother's caregiver and became his father figure, as by the age of five Dino taught South the ways of both gangs and violence alike.

During his time of being taught the benefits of violence, South killed a number of Dino's enemies using a gun and would earn his nickname once Dino was impressed with his tasks so far. For his killings, South has given money and bought his first pair of shoes since that day. Unfortunately for years later, at some unknown point to where he gained immense strength, South killed Dino in his bedroom and in tears while committing the act. South would then usurp Dino into taking over his gang inherited as it dubs its new name "Dino South" and earn the entitlement "Tyrant".

Two years later, a rival gang of South's raided into his home and his bedridden mother got caught in the crossfire, perishing as a result with South receiving gun wounds during the shoot out. Because of both his parents dead, South was given no choice but to move back to Japan to live with his grandparents, though it was presumed he continued his gang activities there and he was sent to juvenile detention due to said actions later on.

During his time in juvie, he encounters the former members of Tenjiku, who were also the S62 Generation, being sent here to the same institution as him. Once he had about them being involved with the Kanto Incident, he ultimately finds the desire and conclusion to force the five to join him in his newly formed gang once they're all released and to create his own era around Japan, which is to become the strongest.

After his release, South and the former Tenjiku members that he forced to join him after the assault established Rokuhara Tandai in the year 2007. However, Kakucho was another candidate he desires to recruit, though Ran, one of the Haitani Brothers, stated that it is impossible since he wasn't a part of Tenjiku before Izana. This later led South to brutally assault Kakucho to forcing him to stand by his side in Rokuhara Tandai shortly.

War of the Three Deities[]

Ever since the Tokyo Manji Gang's disbandment, numerous gangs across Japan attempted to climb up the ranks to seize power, therefore causing what was called "Tokyo's Sengoku Period". However, this unrest fails when three formidable "deities" brought balance into gaining power from their respective gang.

South was one of them as he and the other two "deities" began their own era alongside their whole entitlement being the "Three Deities" as a result of balancing the conflict, though they are to be at war with one another. At some unknown point onward, he met Draken and tries to make him a part of Rokuhara Tandai before Draken refuses his attempts numerous times and presumably joined Brahman that had benevolent intentions of stopping both Rokuhara and the Kanto Manji Gang.

South makes his debut when he encounters Takemichi and Draken in a sudden confrontation where he threw Inupi towards them while they were on a motorcycle ride before the latter landed swiftly to ensure Takemichi and Draken weren't hurt. He then presents himself to the two as his gang, all members from Rokuhara Tandai, had gathered to surround them in their presence.

He would continue to negotiate Draken into joining his gang, though Draken has made it clear that he has no interest in going back to delinquency and continued to refuse his offer. Much to South's anger when Draken states to retire, he would then bash him aside in a single punch as he finds his retirement to be "unforgivable" before the latter got back up, only to be punched in his right elbow and smacked down on the ground.

Upon proving his superior strength on Draken, he would then state how he shares the same ideals as Toman and how he came all the way to Japan to become the strongest to which he says this world is a "dog eating another" and the strongest stays stronger. He would then turn his attention to Takemichi, knowing he is the first division captain of Toman before attempting to assault the weakling. However, Brahman intervenes to scout Takemichi as well, just then Kakucho and the other members from Tenjiku arrive at the scene. They too confront the other members of Brahman before Senju Kawaragi, the leader of Brahman, makes her debut.

Senju would be seen attacking South with her umbrella before he blocked it aside, but Senju had the upper hand of kicking his head down before facing South directly, much to the latter's annoyance. He would then grimmingly greet her in terms of referencing classical music before old members of the Black Dragon's first generation clash with Rokuhara's members as South states of recruiting the strongest for nothing.

After having to witness Brahman's introduction, Draken would then challenge South before he ended up taunting Senju about it, much to the girl not caring as much and her focus on recruiting Takemichi. Draken, however, has had enough of the two of deciding for him and Takemichi as the former first division captain would agree and claim that he is returning to only defeat and save Mikey. This only ends up earning everyone's stares at him before South angrily stands before Takemichi as he calls him a small fry and is insane for trying to intervene with the deities.

Just before South could attack Takemichi, Draken tackles him aside to continue where they left off. However, the police were on their way due to their confrontation causing a traffic jam. Annoyed by the coincidence, he had no other option but to retreat alongside his gang before telling Draken that they'll settle this another time.

At some point on, South had an argument with his underlings about Takemichi and assassinating the latter. When South reluctantly gave the word or simply refused, this led to his underlings the hasty decision of killing Takemichi with a gun before Draken intervened. Upon hearing Draken's death, he beats them for solely killing his target, but ends up praising them for causing his death as it gave him the advantage to start the war.

Once everyone in Brahman has heard of Draken's death, South and the rest of Rokuhara Tandai appear to celebrate Draken's death as a way to provoke the fight. Unfortunately, Mikey and the rest of the Kanto Manji Gang appear before them once he felt a presence regarding Draken's death mysteriously, this got South to become more excited about the war as he led his gang to fight against the rivaling two.

Just then South would witness Akashi getting all fired up in beating his underlings and Kanto Manji's as he would then order Kakucho and the others to take down each of Brahman's and Kanto Manji's strongest members. Akashi would then approach South in anger, calling him out for being responsible for Draken's death and says he should've just killed someone like him. He would prepare to attack Akashi when his underlings held him before Benkei blocked his punch as he begins fighting the latter and his partner Waka.

Before having to fight them, he was impressed by how Benkei and Waka live up to their duo name as they defeated a hundred of his underlings. He would shout out to have them come at him as South takes on the duo of former rivals, only to manage himself against them as he has gotten them all tired out before taunting them and continuing the fight. Just as South attempts to deliver the first blow, Benkei and Waka took the upper hand in outmatching him combined with speed and brawns alike.

As he was pushed aside, he would then calmly explain his past to the duo, telling them about how he killed his mentor with "love" and how his mother's death led him to have gun wounds as shown. He stated that he has been struggling with life and death thanks to his scars, not before he began feeling his "dark urges" and grins sadistically as it gave him more violent tendencies to boost up his strength. When that happened, he violently overwhelms Benkei and Waka easily as a result.

His violent strength was so strong that Akashi called him a monster before Senju approaches him to settle the fight. Akashi tries to persuade Senju not to fight South this early, but she refused as she heads her way of defeating him when her gang was almost done for. South manages to strike a powerful hit on Senju but quickly avoids the attack as she swiftly kicks South in the face repeatedly before having him land on the ground.

Just then South would get up, enraged as he prepares to fight Senju in a violent manner in his breakdown. As they fought, he begins to get excited about this feeling he has as he wants to continue fighting Senju over and over for this "beat". As he manages to take her down easily, he prepares to finish her as he moves Takemichi aside, though this only gave the latter a vision of his death.

Death[]

As South approaches the fallen Senju, Kakucho was pushed aside near him, all brutalized to South's confusion before Mikey confronts him. When South arrogantly claims to finish the "requiem" against Mikey, the latter ends up making a strong kick of using his signature kick as both the strong leaders of their respective gangs use their monstrous strengths against one another. South would be pleased to let this "sanctuary" continue onward until his face ends up getting all bloodied and bruised for underestimating Mikey.

The fight stops shortly when Takemichi tries to stop Mikey from killing South due to the vision of his death, unfortunately, this comes back at him when Mikey breaks his right arm as South couldn't feel himself at this moment. When South loses control to move his body and continue the fight, Mikey coldly beats him to death in a highly brutal manner.

As a result, the vision of South's death came true as the latter died very quickly. But in return, it also ended his reign to create an era for himself for good.

Abilities[]

Due to being one of the formidable individuals in the Three Deities, South stands out as one of the highly strongest characters to exist in the series. There has been more reason on how he earned his title of being "unparalleled" as his fierce strength and violent urges make him well feared by others, especially to the likes of how he easily defeated Kakucho and the former Tenjiku members.

  • Herculean strength and fighting prowess: Due to his rather tall and intimidating presence, South has a strong amount of strength and precision alike, so Herculean and violent that he manages to take down Draken in a single hit. The way he fights in both battle and combat demonstrates his violent behavior as he stylizes his fighting methods through a much wider, utterly crude yet more Herculean way through his punches and hits alike. Although he is tremendously strong, he lacks technique and only fights in a rather brutish matter, however, he does manage to make up for it whenever he shouts out Italian words based on musical references such as "Vivo", "Forte", or "Fortissimo".
  • Endurance level: Given his muscular appearance, South happens to have easily shaken off any type of punch or blowing hit coming from his enemy. Unfortunately, it does not make him invincible as his own endurance that handles any type of physical attacks can't endure against any type of strength more superior than him, to which Mikey was that only example when he blooded South's face.
  • Authority: He has dominating control over Rokuhara Tandai. Despite being the leader, he lacked charisma and instead possesses a controlling demeanor that lets him have full power over his subordinates through his abuse and intimidation alike.

Trivia[]

  • South likely serves as a foil to Mikey. Both of them are incredibly strong and intimidating, as well as being both leaders of rather strong gangs alike, but the utmost important factor the two share in common is embracing their "dark urges". The only difference between them is that while Mikey genuinely cares about his gang and dearly loves his family members, not to mention being rather charismatic and moralistic, South on the other hand is highly abusive and cruel to his gang and has lack of regard to his own parents, as well as being controlling and immoral. Another thing to note is that Mikey embraced his "dark urges" due to the loss of his siblings and his childhood friend Baji and resulting in him becoming completely emotionless and mentally unstable, while South willingly embraced his own "dark urges" due to his desires and intentions of violence as he becomes more violent than before.
  • South shares eerily resemblances to Taiju Shiba. Both of them share the same sadistic and facial expressions and are both equally violent, but they are also rather abusive to their own subordinates. However, the only difference between the two is that Taiju abused his own siblings, and yet he still cares for them (albeit twistedly) while South killed his own father figure while in tears, though he doesn't seem to be highly remorseful about it.
  • His real name Minami ironically means South in Japanese.
  • Because of having to kill a number of Dino's enemies in the past as a child, this could arguably determine that South has a higher bodycount in Tokyo Revengers. However, Haruchiyo Sanzu came close to killing all members of Toman and the Kanto Manji Gang, which would've successfully let the latter kill hundreds in the attempt, making him worse than South.
