The Sovereign (real name Henry Charles) is a major antagonist in the DC Comics universe. He first appeared in Wonder Woman Vol. 6 #1 (November 2023). The Sovereign is depicted as the secret monarch of the United States, ruling from the shadows and opposing Wonder Woman and the Amazons.
History[]
Henry Charles hails from a wealthy and powerful family that has clandestinely ruled the United States since its inception. The Charles family's ascent to power involved the theft of the Lasso of Lies from Native American tribes, which they used to deceive the Founding Fathers into establishing a monarchy disguised as a democracy. Henry usurped the throne from his sister, continuing the family's secretive dominion over the nation.
As the Sovereign, Henry Charles views the emergence of the Amazons, particularly Wonder Woman, as a threat to his authority. His misogynistic beliefs are inflamed by the presence of powerful warrior women within his "kingdom." In response, he orchestrates a campaign against the Amazons, including the creation of the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.) to turn public opinion and governmental forces against them.
The Sovereign's actions lead to significant conflicts with Wonder Woman, culminating in her imprisonment and battles designed to break her spirit. Despite his efforts, Wonder Woman remains resilient, and the Sovereign's machinations ultimately lead to his downfall.
