Soylent; feeding the world, one person at a time.
~ Soylent Corporation Slogan #1.

The Soylent Corporation is an evil food processing corporation and the main antagonist from the dystopian 1973 masterpiece known as Soylent Green. Like many dystopian villains, the Soylent Corporation is a symbolism of sorts against the dangers of large companies, consumerism, overpopulation and a multitude of other political, social and ethical problems.

History[]

The Soylent Corporation is responsible for feeding most of the world's population following a post-apocalypse - they manufacted two main brands known as Soylent Red and Soylent Yellow, which are marketed as being made from high energy vegetable concentrates but begin to market a new brand known as Soylent Green which is marketed as being made from high-energy plankton, it is said to be better tasting and more nutritious than the red and yellow brands but is in short supply like all food in the post-apocalypse, leading to frequent riots.

Before the events of Soylent Green, in 1999, Mark Harthaw and Jackson Fine founded the Soylent Corporation after they discovered the benefits of extracting nutrients from increasing plankton population. Thirteen years later, Harthaw and Fine took their company public, due to overpopulation. In 2015, their corporation opened its first waste-management plant. The Soylent Corporation was known for its services in the food and waste disposal industries. In time, William R. Simonson would eventually rise to the CEO position in the company, until he was murdered.

However by the end of the story the horrible truth about Soylent Green is revealed when the story's protagonist finds out the brand is really made out of dead human meat - in essence making the Soylent Corporation not only murderers but also twisted individuals that have been forcing humanity into the gruesome act of cannibalism. However, the corporation might have believed it to be the only way to deal with the many problems caused during the post-apocalypse, therefore meaning that they are not completely insane murderers (and they also may be recycling bodies instead of killing random people).

Quotes[]

The future is now.
~ Soylent Corporation Slogan #2.
Soylent Green is people! We've got to stop them somehow!
~ Detective Frank Thorn.

Trivia[]

  • The movie was actually based on a 1966 science-fiction novel called Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison. In the original book, the Soylent Corporation were a legitimate business, with the famous secret of Soylent Green having been made up for the movie.
