Spandine is a minor antagonist from One Piece franchise, being the overarching antagonist of Enies Lobby arc. He is the father of Spandam and the former leader of CP9. He was also the one who responsible for the Buster Call on Ohara, which wiped out almost all of its inhabitants.
Like his son, he was voiced by Masaya Onosaka in Japanese and Christopher Corey Smith in English.
Personality[]
Like his son, Spandine shows cowardice and egotism, the latter where he shows utmost loyalty to the World Government and has no regards nor remorse to anyone but himself, therefore abusing his powers to get what he wants. Spandam seems to get his scatterbrained nature from Spandine, because it's the same sometimes. So he made a huge fuss and rolled on the ground after Olvia shot him, but she didn't even hit him. He also felt a lot of malicious pleasure when he pressed the Buster Call button.
Biography[]
22 years ago, arriving on Ohara, Spandine, two CP9 agents and several world government officials got out. Spandine told his men that every scientist on the island should be taken into custody. While the officers warned the civilians and stormed the Tree of Knowledge, Nico Olvia shot the CP9 director. The shot went through the jacket, but Olvia said she wouldn't miss it next time. Spandine then explains to her that they would definitely find proof of research into the Poneglyph on the island, and Olvia's presence would also be proof of this. They wanted to show the world what happens when someone tries to find out the true history. Ten navy warships would already be standing by around the island. After these words, Spandine unleashed his two agents on Olvia, seriously injuring her. All the scientists had now been gathered in front of the Tree of Knowledge. Spandine got there and threw Olvia to the ground in front of them. Shortly afterwards, a loud bang was heard. Through Den Den Mushi, Spandine learned that his men had found a secret cellar with a Poneglyph in it. He wanted to share the final proof with the Five Elders.
Professor Clover, head of the archaeologists, demanded that Spandine speak to them and tell them what they had discovered about the lost story. The Five Elders finally allowed Clover to speak to them. However, when he wanted to speak out the name of the kingdom, the Five Elders ordered him to be silenced. Without hesitation, Spandine pulled out a pistol and shot the old man. They further gave the order to wipe out Ohara. Spandine did this with pleasure and pressed the button on the Golden Den Den Mushi, whereupon the warships were alerted to attack. The officers left and Spandine ordered Olvia to be taken with them because she would still have information. Robin asked her if she was her mother and said that she had also studied archeology, which Spandine overheard. Since the island was now under heavy attack, Spandine and his men fled, even leaving Olvia behind. When Spandine saw from his own ship that Robin was trying to get onto a lifeboat, he ordered her not to be allowed on board.
22 years later, in the present, after the Straw Hats attacked Enies Lobby, Spandine spoke to his son at the hospital bed. They discussed a plan for revenge against the former CP9 agents, who they believed were to blame for the mission's failure.
