Species 8472 are a major antagonistic force within the popular long-running sci-fi franchise, Star Trek, first appearing in Star Trek Voyager they would become one of the greatest threats that Voyager ever encountered and were notable as one of the first major powers to outrank even the Borg in threat, to the point that Voyager had to aid the Borg against the new alien threat (despite the immense danger the Borg presented in themselves).
Species 8472 originated in an alien realm known as Fluidic Space, a region of seemingly infinite size that was radically different from the rest of space/time, being filled with organic liquid and being populated solely by an unnamed species.
The Borg arrived in Fluidic Space and began their usual tactics of trying to assimilate the native species into their own, naming them Species 8472 in the process - however the Borg faced an unexpected resistance as Species 8472 proved themselves superior to even the Borg and began to obliterate the would-be-invaders.
The Borg would grow to consider Species 8472 as the closest thing to biological perfection but this did little to calm the fury of Species 8472, a deeply xenophobic species they pursued the Borg into main space and soon grew to view all other life as weak and thus deserving only of genocide.
This fanatical devotion to absolute xenophobia put Species 8472 in direct conflict with the Federation and due to their supreme belief that all other life outside their own was inferior they were virtually impossible to reason with, making a peaceful solution to the conflict extremely remote, especially as the species had access to unfathomably powerful bio-weapons capable of destroying entire planets.
In fact, so strong was Species 8472's xenophobia that they believed the Borg simply entering Fluidic Space had "contaminated" it and thus in vengeance they decided upon wiping out all life in the Milky Way Galaxy.
