Spectre are the main antagonists of the James Bond reboot film series. It is a mysterious global criminal syncidate behind the already shadowy Quantum organization, which first appeared unnamed Casino Royale and reappeared in Quantum of Solace. It was responsible for backing many of the foes 007 faced, including Le Chiffre, Mr. White, Dominic Greene and Raoul Silva.
History[]
007 initally uncovered an underground orginzation known as Quantum. After facing several of their operatives, James Bond would uncover an even more shadowy organization behind them - Spectre. Aside from Quantum, Spectre was also responsible for backing Raoul Silva, a cyberterrorist with a vendetta against M.
Having infiltrated intelligence agencies over the world, Spectre sought to gain a foothold over the world through the "Nine Eyes" program, a project by British intelligence designed by Max Denbigh, who was really a Spectre operative working to grant them unlimited access to the world's intelligence networks. However, the plan was thwarted by James Bond and Spectre's leader, Franz Oberhauser/Ernst Stavro Blofeld, was ultimately arrested and taken into custody. Despite his incarceration, Blofeld was able to secretly continue overseeing and coordinating Spectre operations from Belmarsh, including orchestrating an assassination attempt on Bond in Matera in order to destroy his relationship with Madeline Swan.
Five years following Blofeld's arrest, Spectre later abducted MI6 scientific Valdo Obruchev in order to gain control of Project Heracles, a nano-weapon that could be coded to target specific people. They lured James Bond to a party celebrating Blofeld's 75th birthday in order to kill him using Heracles, but when they released it, it instead killed all of the Spectre leaders within the vicinity; Obruchev had reprogrammed Heracles to target them instead of Bond on the orders of Lyutsifer Safin, who wished to destroy the organisation in revenge for the murder of his family at the hands of Mr. White. The only known survivors were Blofeld, who remained incarcerated, and Primo, who later entered Safin's employment. Bond inadvertently exposed Blofeld to Heracles while visiting him in prison, causing his death, and Primo was ultimately killed by Bond during the final battle at Safin's base. It is likely that several low-level Spectre operatives remain at large following Safin's death, but with the the organization's entire leadership completely wiped out, they possess none of the power or influence they once had and are no longer a major threat to the world.

Trivia[]
- Thanks to the legal dispute being settled between EON Studios (the owners of the Bond films) and the McClory Estate, SPECTRE returned as the eponymous main antagonists of the 24th Bond film SPECTRE, once again led by Blofeld, as well as the following Bond film, No Time to Die.
- It is interesting to note that in the Bulgarian subtitles of Quantum of Solace, the name "Quantum" was translated as "SPECTRE", with the title changed to "Spectre of Solace" ("Спектър на утехата"). This is despite the movie coming out in 2008, five years before Eon Productions reacquired the rigths to SPECTRE and retconned them into being behind Quantum.
- Unlike the original SPECTRE, Spectre's name is not spelled in all-caps as it is not an acronym for anything.
- During the writing of Spectre, the screenwriters devised a possible backstory for the organization, depicting Blofeld, Mr. White and C (who was originally concieved as an older character) as former members of the French Foreign Legion. While lost in the desert, the trio turned on their fellow soldiers, killing them and eating the corpses to survive. Early drafts for the film had the ruins of a French Foreign Legion fort as a setting.
