Spencer (Doctor Who)

Spencer is the secondary antagonist in the Doctor Who story "The Faceless Ones".

He was portrayed by the late Victor Winding.

Biography[]

Spencer was one of the Chameleons working at Gatwick Airport. Like many Chameleons, his human persona was based on a kidnapped original, with whom he needed to maintain a link to survive. He posed as an airline pilot with Chameleon Tours, serving under Captain Blade. Together, they took on a lead role in abducting everyone who flew with Chameleon Tours, transporting them to a space station where they were placed in suspended animation and their identities given to Chameleons.

Spencer discovered Detective Inspector Gascoigne with the postcards that the Chameleons had passengers fill out in advance, posting them from the destination to make it appear they'd arrived safely. Spencer killed Gascoigne and then alerted Blade. He realised Polly had witnessed the murder and he and Blade monitored her bringing the Doctor and Jamie to the hangar. They were struck by the Doctor's intelligence but Blade considered Polly the priority since she could identify Spencer. Spencer kidnapped her and took her to Blade, after which she was sent to be processed. He also captured Ben when he came looking for her.

When the Doctor returned to the hangar, Spencer attempted to gas him to death but the Doctor overpowered him after playing dead. Spencer directed another Chameleon, posing as an air traffic controller called Meadows, to plant a button on the Doctor. Spencer activated it by remote control in an attempt to kill the Doctor but he managed to pull it off before it could do serious harm. Spencer then overpowered Jamie and his friend Samantha Briggs, setting up a laser to kill the two of them and the Doctor, but they escaped.

Spencer later set up Detective Inspector Crossland to be captured by Blade and also captured Samantha again, hoping to duplicate her so one of their number could spy on the Doctor. Eventually, the order was given for the Chameleons at Gatwick to return to the space station. The Doctor managed to accompany them by posing as a Chameleon duplicate of himself, then revealed the Commandant at Gatwick had discovered the originals of all the Chameleons from Gatwick and was poised to break the link and kill them unless they surrendered. Spencer and Blade quickly agreed to return all the kidnapped humans, even though it meant reverting to their previous identityless state.
