~ Spencer's outburst at Brent during his arrest |
Spencer Anderson is the overarching antagonist of the Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode "Gemini". Spencer is the brother of schizophrenic spree killer Brent Anderson who uses him to kill people and collect on their life insurance policies.
He was portrayed by Michel Gill.
Biography[]
Spencer was a sociopath who sided with his and Brent's parents' bias against Brent's schizophrenia, which was exacerbated by his hard drug use. However, Spencer was particularly begrudged with having to be primarily responsible for Brent. Either to pick on Brent's condition or get him out of Spencer's life, Spenser hit a store clerk with a tire iron and made off with alcohol and cigarettes, putting the blame on Brent. Brent sent three years in juvie, where he was properly diagnosed with schizophrenia, but his family cared even less. Spencer got off with probation, and by the time their parents died, he was the family's primary provider, in the hopes the money would prevent Brent from getting near Spencer's wife Betty and their children. Spencer continuously blamed Brent for every slight in his life, down to when Spencer was turned down for a promotion.
Brent snapped from his delusions and went on a killing spree against cosmetic specialists. Spencer saw this when a police sketch matching Brent was publicly released, and he decided to use Brent again to throw him away and take advantage of the crisis. Spencer knew where Brent's next attack, which failed, would be, so since Brent sent letters, so did Spencer, but with antisemitic overtones to divert police away from Brent's schizophrenia. Once Spencer helped Brent get arrested, he decided to get some money by making it look like the killer was still at large. He shot an optician, then discreetly sent an extortion demand of $5 million to send to multiple offshore accounts.
Spencer was arrested to prevent his escape, but to get him charged, Detectives Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames pitted him against Brent. Brent was told about how Spencer used him, lied to him that he was Brent's primary protector and fed his delusions for his own needs. Devastated, Brent confessed he told Spencer where he kept his gun used in the murders. Spencer snapped and yelled at Brent he wished he stayed committed or died. Even in spite of Brent saying he still loved Spencer, Spencer didn't hear him out and was arrested, eventually being imprisoned for his crimes. Brent was hospitalized to treat his psychiatric illnesses.
