Spencer Spendington is the overarching antagonist of The Garfield Show five-part episode Lion Queen.
He is the rich owner of a menagerie simply known as the Zoo who only allows rich people to enter. He tried to offer Liz a job as a vet for his zoo, but she refused due to his bad treatement of animals. He is also the boss of Dirk Dinkum and Buckley, who he sends both to Africa in order to import two Manzian White Lions into his menagerie. However, he would later get arrested for it alongside Dirk and Buckley when it is revealed that importing such animals in a zoo is illegal.
He was voiced by the late Stan Freberg, who also voiced Dr. Whipple in the same series.
Appearance[]
Spencer Spendington is an overweight bald man with red round glasses, a red suit, a white shirt and a small red bow tie. He also has white and yellow stripped pants and brown shoes.
Biography[]
Spencer Spendington is first introduced when Liz and Jon visits his zoo, as he claims that Liz would get a job as a vet there. On the way to his mansion, Liza explains that as one of the richest people in the world, he owns multiple mansions, private jets, cars as well as a private zoo. As they arrive in the zoo, Spencer gives both Liz and Jon a tour around the different exhibits, which contain rare animals that turned out to be treated quite poorly, not even being given enough food by it's owner.
As the tour continues, Jon asks Spencer who gets to see the animals in his zoo besides him, which the latter answers that only his rich friends, declaring that all his friends in the zoo is rich. Liz then explains to him what Jon was referring about, which is why are people coming to his zoo that aren't rich. Spencer responds that the non-rich people coming to his zoo are servants as well as both her and Jon. He then leads them to his most important exhibit, an empty cage where he is planning to have a Manzian White Lion imported there, as it is something he always had wanted to bring to his zoo.
He then calls Dirk Dinkum and Buckley in video form about the report on their search for the rare animals, learning that they are on it's trail. This angers Liz, who mentions that the Manzian White Lion is one of the rarest and most beautiful animals and that she wouldn't tolerate Spencer to have it brought to his zoo and locked up in his exhibit, but Spencer declares that he can still afford it, as he claims that he can afford anything he wants. As Liz warns that the species are endangered due to how few there are, Spencer reveals to Liz that he called her to his zoo so she can become a vet, which she refuses with no hesitation due to how horrible his treatement of animals are.
Later, as Dirk and Buckley arrived to Manzia to search for the white lions, they talk to Spencer on the phone, saying that they are currently doing good progress on their search, to which he tasks them to have the Manzian White Lion imported to him by tommorrow. He also mentions that he is having a party with his most wealthier friends and that he would show off the rare animal for the occasion.
Spencer is then not seen until the final part of the episode, where he declares to everyone that his zoo was made to exhibit all sorts of animals around the world for his rich friends, with the help of Dirk Dinkum. He then shows the new exhibit where the Manzian White Lion is locked up. At first, he notices the animal wasn't in the cage, but sees that it is behind him on his right, which is shown to be Queen Tania. However, he would be exposed by Jon, Liz and Angie about how all of Spencer's animals are poorly treated for his own profit, but Spencer disputes this claim by lying about the lion being happy and tries to prove it by entering the cage and moving her but to no avail.
At that moment, Buckley announces from a helicopter that another white lion is being brought to his zoo, revealed to be King Royale, Queen Tania's husband, as they both roar in reunion. Angered at Spencer's actions, Tania approaches him as the latter begs for his guards to help him out, but in vain. He tries to have Garfield free him from the cage, which succeeds briefly, but Garfield wouldn't only free Queen Tania, as he then pulls down all of the switches, freeing all of the animals Spencer had locked up and mistreated. During the chaos that ensured, Spencer is grabbed by an elephant and thrown into a lake, where a shark chases him and bites his head. Later, once the chief of police put an end to the chaos, Spencer frames the "unwanted" guests Liz, Jon, Angie and Armstrong for all the trouble as well as Garfield for letting all of the animals loose. As they were about to be arrested, however, Garfield shows to the chief a phone describing how importing Manzian White Lions is illegal and could lead to prison for many years, which ultimately puts an end to Spencer's scheme as he, Dirk and Buckley are taken away by the police and imprisoned for their crimes.
