“ | I...am the bearer of the memories of Queen Sphene of Alexandria, and my desire to protect my people transcends all others! For them, I will do anything! No price is too high! | „ |
~ Sphene |
Sphene is a central figure introduced in the Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail expansion. She holds the title of Queen of Reason and rules over the technologically advanced kingdom of Alexandria. Her unwavering commitment to safeguarding her people leads her into direct conflict with the city of Tuliyollal and its allies.
Biography[]
Early Life and Ascension[]
Originally a princess of Alexandria, Sphene was deeply beloved by her people. Her dedication to their well-being was evident even before she ascended the throne. Alexandria, located on another reflection of the Source, became embroiled in a war with the neighboring kingdom of Lindblum following the discovery of electrope—a material capable of absorbing lightning-aspected aether and altering its elemental affinity.
Rule and Philosophy[]
As Queen of Reason, Sphene emphasized logic, order, and the preservation of her citizens' memories. Under her reign, Alexandria developed advanced technologies, including regulators—devices that allowed citizens to return to life by expending souls harvested from the dead. This system also enabled the uploading of deceased individuals' memories to a central server in the Everkeep, Alexandria's fortress.
Conflict with Tuliyollal[]
The fusion of Alexandria's dimension with the region of Yyasulani on the Source led to tensions with Tuliyollal. Sphene's alliance with Zoraal Ja, who sought to harness Alexandrian technology for his ambitions, further escalated the situation. While Sphene initially opposed Zoraal Ja's methods, the energy crisis threatening Alexandria compelled her to support his plans to harvest souls from Tuliyollal to sustain the Endless—the digital remnants of her people.
Downfall and Legacy[]
After Zoraal Ja's defeat, Sphene attempted to continue the dimensional fusion, believing it necessary for her people's survival. However, the Scions of the Seventh Dawn intervened, leading to a confrontation in the Living Memory—a realm where the memories of deceased Alexandrians manifested physically. In the final battle, Sphene, as Queen Eternal, sought to purge her human memories to eliminate remorse. Wuk Lamat's intervention restored Sphene's personality, leading to her reconciliation and eventual deactivation. She entrusted the safety of her citizens to Wuk Lamat and the Scions before her departure.
Personality[]
Sphene is characterized by her rationality, composure, and deep sense of duty. Her decisions are guided by logic and a desire to protect her people, even if it means making morally ambiguous choices. Her transformation into a digital avatar, known as a simulant, further complicates her identity, as she grapples with the preservation of her people's memories and the ethical implications of her actions.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Regulator Interface: Allows Sphene to interact with and control Alexandrian technology, including the resurrection of citizens through soul expenditure.
- Queen Eternal Form: In this state, Sphene attempts to delete her human memories, enhancing her capabilities but risking the loss of her empathy and identity.
- Command over the Endless: As the overseer of the digital remnants of her people, Sphene can mobilize the Endless in defense of Alexandria.
