The Spider is a minor antagonist in the 2015 Spanish adult animated film Birdboy: The Forgotten Children.
It is a demonic entity shaped like a spider possessing Zacharias' mother, serving as a physical manifestation of her drug addiction.
It was voiced by Maribel Legarreta in Spanish and Cindy Robinson in English, the latter of which also voiced Zacharias' mother.
Appearance[]
It is a shadowy spider with red glowing eyes. It appears to grow or shrink in size depending on how much of Zacharias' mother's addiction is fed into.
Biography[]
Sometime after the island was devastated when the local factory exploded and the death of her husband, Zacharias' mother took to drugs as a coping mechanism, but soon grew addicted to its effects. Zacharias has been obtaining little money by selling fish and pills that Birdboy takes to keep the demon within him at bay. He plans on leaving the island, but stays to care for his mother, having become bedridden from her drugs' effects. Her addiction takes the form of a spider demon, who pesters Zacharias on his mother's behalf to grant her more drugs. Whenever his mother is injected, the spider grows to a giant size.
Meanwhile, Dinky and her friends Sandra and Little Fox, seeking to rent a boat so they could escape the island, sneak into the house to steal the remaining money they need. They nearly get away undetected until Little Fox accidentally drops Zacharias' piggy bank after being startled that it can talk, alerting the spider of their presence, who quickly rushes downstairs to confront the thieves. It grabs Little Fox when he tries to flee out the open window, only for Sandra to slam the window frame on the spider's arm, allowing the three to escape with the piggy bank.
The spider then turns its rage at Zacharias, blaming him for standing by and not stopping the invaders. With the effect of the drugs fading, the spider shrinks down to regular size and orders Zacharias to sweep the dirty floor. As he sweeps, the spiders demands Zacharias track down the thieves and kill them, bringing back their heads. It also insists that once his mother passes, nobody will ever love him.
Fed up with the spider's abuse, further egged on by his mother urging him to "kill it", Zacharias crushes it with the broom. The death of the spider frees his mother from its possession who soon dies from withdrawal from her drugs, but thanks Zacharias for freeing her in her dying words.
