I was aware of this spider in a way I never had been of others that preceded it. It wasn’t the biggest, maybe an inch wide, but its abdomen was swelled grotesquely. I could feel every one of its void-black eyes focused upon me, see each hair on its fat, bulbous body, and smell the venom I knew dripped from its fangs. I hate spiders, as I have said, but I would have sworn that this one hated me back.
~ Carlos Vittery describing the Spider.

The Spider is a minor antagonist of the Rusty Quill horror podcast The Magnus Archives, serving as the main antagonist of Mag 16: Arachnophobia. It was a paranormal spider and a creature of the Web. After being killed by Carlos Vittery as a child, it began coming back and haunting him, driving him to madness.

Appearance[]

The Spider was a somewhat standard-looking spider, being about an inch wide. It had a swollen abdomen, hairs, black eyes, and fangs with apparently had visible poison.

Personality[]

At first glance, the Spider didn't seem to be any different from a normal spider. However, it seemed to realize its invincibility and never showed fear from Carlos. It seemed to hate him somehow and took pleasure in torturing him.

Biography[]

In autumn of 1991, the Spider was sitting on its egg sack when it first met Carlos Vittery. He was six years old, and he accidentally crushed the Spider, falling onto the egg sack and becoming covered in half-formed spiders, giving him an extreme case of life-long arachnophobia.

Somehow, the Spider returned to life and appeared in Carlos's kitchen several decades later. Carlos killed it by throwing a coffee mug at it, breaking the mug and successfully killing the spider. However, it once again returned to life soon afterwards, appearing on his television set, which he then kicked, once again killing the Spider and breaking the TV. That night, the spider appeared once more in his room and compelled Carlos to crush it with his bare hands. The Spider did not appear in Carlos' apartment again for several weeks but eventually chocked and killed him before wrapping his body in webbing.

Trivia[]

  • Carlos' childhood experience about bursting a spider egg sack is likely based on voice actor Lydia Nicholas' (the voice of Melanie King in this same podcast) own experience where the same thing happened and left her very scared of spiders for several years.
  • According to Carlos, the spiders in his building were attracting by a worm infestation. These worms were eventually linked to Jane Prentiss living in the building's basement, although whether these two entities are connected is unknown.
  • Carlos Vittery's name was later found by Jonathan Sims on Chelicerae, a Web-related website, implying that the website had something to do with the Spider tormenting Vittery.
