Spring Heeled Jack is a humanoid cryptid that was said to be active in the Victorian era, and became so famous he is now considered part of English folklore.
Biography[]
Spring Heeled Jack is apparently some kind of demon, phantom, or other extra-dimensional being, and was said to take great delight in acts of mischief, startling people with his frightening appearance and leaping incredible heights, and can blow flames out of his mouth.
There have been many theories as to who or what Spring Heeled Jack actually was. Some state he was one of the many humanoid ghosts, who stalked the streets of London during the 19th century-or at the very least that myths inspired the legend of Spring Heeled Jack. Others theorize that he was either a regular human or a group of humans pulling pranks on others. One such suspect in his sightings was the Marques of Waterford, who was infamous for his reckless behavior, brutal jokes and contempt for women and police officers.
Spring Heeled Jack was also quite happy to commit several malicious acts, such as grabbing a poor woman in the streets, tearing her clothes off, and kissing her on the face before fleeing into the night. It was claimed he also leaped into the path of a moving carriage, forcing the coachman to lose control and crash, resulting in serious injury to the victim.
One of the most well known sightings of Spring Heeled Jack occurred on February 19th, 1838. Jane Alsop received a knock on her door from a man in a large cloak, who claimed to be a police officer. He told her to bring a light, saying that "we have caught Spring-heeled Jack here in the lane". When she brought him a candle, he threw his cloak off and "presented a most hideous and frightful appearance" with eyes like "red balls of fire". He then breathed blue and white flames out of his mouth before he attacked her. He tore her gown with his claws which she described as being "of some metallic substance". She screamed for help as she attempted to escape, at which point he caught up to her and tore her neck and arms with his claws. One of her sisters came to the rescue after he fled the scene.
Nine days later after Alsop's attack, 18-year-old Lucy Scales and her sister were returning home after visiting her brother. On their way as they passed Green Dragon Alley, they noticed a man standing in an angle of the passage. As Lucy walked closer towards him, he breathed "a quality of blue flame" in her face, which blinded her and caused her to fall. He then attacked her with his fists which went on for hours. Her brother overheard he screams from his house after they left and came to rescue, only to find Lucy on the ground in her sister's arms. When they reported to the police, Lucy's sister described him in the same way Alsop had, but with one exception being that he carried a small lamp or bull's eye similar to those used by the police. According to her, he did not speak as he attacked them, but walked away quickly after a while.
The legend of Spring Heeled Jack continues to this day, but the actual cryptid has not been seen since the end of the Victorian era, though variants of the tale crop up every now and then in other countries.
Appearances[]
The descriptions of Spring Heeled jack varied throughout time. The most well known of them, and the one often depicted in art regarding the character, is that of a man wearing an oilskin, with a cape, red glowing eyes, metallic claws, a pointed nose, and a black helmet with horns. However, some eyewitnesses have described him as looking far more beast-like, being that of a giant creature resembling a bipedal bull, much like the Minotaur.
