“ | Excuse you! I am no ugly plant creature! I'm a SPROUT MOLE, a very high-functioning and intelligent creature. What you are referring to is a LOST SPROUT MOLE. When SPROUT MOLES become lost, they can often become hostile and attack without warning! Hmm... actually... where am I? ...Could it be that I'm... lost? Urgg... Suddenly, I don't feel so good... EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! | „ |
~ The first friendly Sprout Mole encountered in the game turning hostile in a very ironic way. |
The Sprout Moles are supporting antagonists in the Omori franchise.
They are a group of fictional plant-like creatures who are obsessed with Sweetheart, delusionally willing to do anything in their power to throw their attention to her, despite her obvious lack of care or respect for them. However, after Sweetheart's defeat, the Sprout Moles cease their support for their former idol.
Appearance[]
Generically, all Sprout Moles are round, tear-shaped, plant-like creatures with insignificant faces, stubby feet and a long shoot sprouting out of their heads. More distinct Sprout Moles have unique features to their appearance, such as through clothes or haircuts.
Personality[]
Omori's battle system suggests Sprout Moles are capable of feeling human emotions. In the overworld, they are generally calm, relaxed and friendly, but turn hysterical and aggressive attack anyone they see if they become lost. It is claimed that Sprout Moles have high intelligence, but there is evidence both supporting and opposing this statement. While certain individual Sprout Moles like Sir Maximus are analytic and calculating, and Rosa are shown to be cunning, strategic and deceptive, most cannot distinguish the difference between a real Sprout Mole and humans wearing Sprout Mole masks as a disguise.
Biography[]
Prologue[]
Sprout Moles first appear in game during the trip to Basil's house. Three Sprout Moles stand as obstacles on the path. Each of the three moles hold one of the three main emotions and act as the tutorial into the emotion mechanic of the game's battle system. The leader of the Sprout Moles, Ye Old Sprout, is seen blocking the entrance to Basil's house. He serves as the final boss of Vast Forest and the tutorial. His battle introduces the energy concept and subsequently follow-up attacks and the ultimate attack.
Following Basil's disappearance, numerous Lost Sprout Moles roam around Vast Forest as enemies. They are hostile and will chase Omori and friends until they are out of range. Should the group come into contact with a Sprout Mole, a battle will ensue. While not a significantly dangerous threat later on in the game, the group's low stats and lack of healing items at this point in the game means Sprout Moles are capable of heavily injuring or even turning a friend to TOAST. The first friendly Sprout Mole is found at the train station. It explains Sprout Moles are only hostile if they get lost. Unfortunately, the same Sprout Mole realizes it is lost, and attacks the group.
In Otherworld, the player can visit the Sprout Mole Colony, in which they will find the old habitat of the Sprout Moles, where only a few Sprout Moles remain. Also, in another section of Otherworld, Lone Mole can be found. It is visibly frustrated when Omori cuts down its cone barriers to reach it, and forces the group to repair the cones.
In the Junkyard, Omori and friends encounter Rosa, who is attempting to steal Captain Spaceboy's mixtape. Rosa attempts to run off, but they catch up and take the mixtape from Rosa (after fighting Download Window). Rosa vows revenge as she leaves.
Three Days Left[]
Lost Sprout Moles can once again be encountered as enemies in Pyrefly Forest, where they, like in Vast Forest, are openly hostile towards Omori and friends and will attack on sight. There is a sub-group of Sprout Mole encountered here called "Sprout Mole?" which is basically a Sprout Mole but upside down. On the road to the Sprout Mole Village, the player can find piles of dead Sprout Moles who were all killed by King Crawler. During the fight against King Crawler, Sprout Moles may appear in battle. If the Sprout Moles are not killed by King Crawler's turn, King Crawler will consume the Sprout Mole, killing it and restoring King Crawler's heart.
Sprout Moles are most present in the Sprout Mole Village. Some of these Sprout Moles contribute towards questlines, while others provide items to the player, and some are just there for aesthetic and comical reasons. During Sweetheart's show, many Sprout Moles are present, including the host, Sprout Mole Mike. The Sprout Moles blindly throw praise at their idol while she insults them and shows her egotistical lack of care towards her audience. The Sprout Moles are sent into panic when the power unexpectedly goes off, forcing Omori and friends to reconnect the power. Upon their return, Rosa, still seeking to extract her revenge on the group, disguises herself as "Mustache Mole" and tricks Hero into replacing Snaley, the third contestant on the show who had been killed by lightning during the power outage. Hero participates in the show, but refuses to marry Sweetheart when she declares him the winner. The group is arrested by Sweetheart's Sprout Mole guards when they attempt to save Hero.
During the group's escape from Sweetheart's Castle, various Harolds, Luciuses, Marshas and Thereses can be seen patrolling both the dungeon and the castle. They will attack on sight in the dungeon, but because Omori and friends don Sprout Mole masks they stole from King Crawler, the guard Sprout Moles become oblivious to the group in the castle, and will only attack if bumped into. Despite being stronger than regular Sprout Moles, these Sprout Mole guards are less of a threat due to Omori and friends having greater stats at this point in the game than at the start.
Various NPC Sprout Moles appear throughout Sweetheart's castle. Most of these Sprout Moles only appear for aesthetic purposes, but the Chef Moles, Virtuoso Mole and Guest List Mole are essential towards progressing the plot. The player must complete their tasks (baking a cake, "training" the choir and singling out non-pink moles respectively) before the next area, Sweetheart's Garden, is opened. Following the player's completion of a task, Sir Maximus will appear, informing the group he knows they are not Sprout Moles (which no one else seems to know), and will attack. The same process is repeated with the other two tasks with Sir Maximus II and III.
In Sweetheart's Castle, four Sprout Moles tasked with guarding Sweetheart's secret password (recognised through their distinct armor) can be interacted with. Carol The Illustrous will offer her part of the password for a piece of tofu, Brian The Distinguished will reveal his part if the player can prove Omori and friends are not Sprout Moles, Alex The Esteemed tells the group his part after some reluctance, and Helen The Calamitous straight up spills her part to the group. The password is "Sweet Jelly Filled Donut", which allows Omori and friends to sneak back into Sweetheart's show.
Many Sprout Moles are present when the show begins, with Sprout Mole Mike declaring it "the final episode" after "forty-two seasons". However, in an anti-climactic twist, the finale turns out to be Sweetheart marrying herself, due to having narcissistic standards too great for anyone else to be her partner. When Omori and friends take off the masks and reveal their identity to convince Sweetheart to stop her self-marriage, Sweetheart personally fights the kids. The audience evacuates the room during this time, and after Sweetheart's defeat, her guards abandon their allegiance to her, stepping back in surrender. When Captain Spaceboy arrives to announce his forgiveness of Sweetheart and desire to marry her, the redeemed guards join Omori and friends in watching the marriage as Sprout Mole Mike announces the vows. Mike personally watches as his former boss and her new husband fly off in Spaceboy's spaceship, before leaving the castle to embark on his own endeavors.
Two Days Left[]
Following Sweetheart's defeat, the Sprout Moles lose significant importance in the plot as the story shifts towards the real world and focuses less on Headspace. There are still quests in based around the Sprout Moles, such as blackmailing Rosa to retreat Pessi's Thing and retrieving the party's clams from Shady Mole. However, they no longer contribute to the plot and are only present for additional content.
Still, the Sprout Moles can be found and interacted with should the player return to previous locations. Sir Maximus IV and Rosa can be found at Pyrefly Forest's Club Sandwich. Maximus laments over the deaths of his family members while wishing he was stronger so he could protect them. Rosa, on the other hand, is scornful of Omori and friends. She is disgusted that Sweetheart is now missing thanks to their actions. Sprout Mole Mike can be found in Last Resort's Club Sandwich, where he drunkenly displays jealously over Sweetheart's choice of Spaceboy over him.
In Humphrey, a larger Sprout Mole named Big Molio can be rescued by Omori from floating down a river inside Humphrey. Should the player do this, Big Molio will come back later on and destroy Experiment 667, returning the deed by saving the group.
One Day Left[]
The ultimate fate of the Sprout Moles, along with the entirety of Headspace, is unknown. In the good ending, it is presumed that the Sprout Moles were erased from existence along with the rest of the dream world due to Sunny revealing the truth and finally breaking the cycle of Headspace. The same can be said in the Bad Ending and one of the Neutral Endings, as Sunny's death means there is no longer a need for Headspace. However, it is possible that Headspace, and therefore the Sprout Moles, lived on in the other Neutral Ending, as Sunny is alive and there is no revelation of the truth, meaning Sunny is stuck in his cycle of dreaming.
