~ Spud Muffin revealing his true nature. |
Spud Muffin is the main antagonist of the Netflix series Transformers: Botbots. He was a former member of the Hunger Hubs and Burgertron's former friend turned arch-nemesis.
He was voiced by Joseph Motiki in his first villainous role.
Personality[]
Spud Muffin is two-sided like a coin, one side being a loyal but reasonable persona façade and his true side being jealous, megalomaniacal and greedily selfish. While he puts up the face of a proud member of the Hunger Hubs, he absolutely despised not being the leader of his squad, feeling Burgertron to be very unworthy of his original leadership position and hating being seen as second-dish to the cheeseburger bot. This lead him to relentlessly attempt to rid the mall of Burgertron permanently, a goal which also extended to the Lost Bots when they entered the picture. Because of this, he constantly made sure that whatever Burgertron attempts in order to redeem his friends always fails, typically keeping his manipulations secret.
Despite how he wants to be seen by the other BotBots (especially Ulf the Orange, Burgertron's girlfriend), Spud is typically a total coward, panicking the moment something lethal even barely reaches him. Additionally, he heavily relies on Dave's general sloppiness to cover up his tracks, as his attempts to hide his hand in sabotage are usually transparent, though only Bonz-Eye has been shown to have enough focus to piece together the clues he leaves behind.
As Burgertron kept on surviving his attempts to redemption and be accepted by the bots again, Spud kept on getting more and more aggressive, leading him to become careless enough for Burgertron to pick up on his deceptions during the Goldrush games. After Burgertron ultimately chose to help Dimlit win and exposed Spud as the mastermind of events, Spud Muffin was ultimately revealed as severely deranged and psychotic. This behavior leads him to gloat of actions which makes him unaware of his surroundings, only after Dave saw him that he stopped ranting. After the other bots began ganging up on him in disgust and outrage for his selfish behavior and actions, Spud was shown visibly cowering, both before and after he was exiled to the dark side of the mall.
Appearance[]
Spud Muffin was one of the first BotBot characters in the franchise, debuting in the very first wave of merchandise in the line's 2018 debut. The design was relatively simple, featuring a yellow crown/hair-like helmet formed from the actual fries while the white box formed his actual body. His face and part of his arms were grey, he had a blue visor, and his pelvis was red, the color of which also appears on a chevron adorning his chest.
Like many of the BotBots in the series, Spud Muffin's television series design deviates heavily from both the original toy and the original character artwork in the toyline's promotional material. His face, torso and limbs are now a cream color, while his outer armor much of the inner legs are a tinted shade of white. His helmet, a ovular patch on his torso, and the armor on his shoulders, forearms and calves are now golden, while his visor was swapped out for separate eyes with black pupils.
In the series, Spud Muffin wore a white square patch with the Hunger Hubs logo on his chest during the Goldrush Games. While his helmet typically had a regal crown-like arrangement, it became erratically positioned in the end of the series once his true personality emerged. Additionally, After he was exposed and before he realized Dave had seen him, Spud Muffin's left pupil enlarged and turned red in color, further signifying his derangement.
Biography[]
Spud Muffin came into existence with all the other BotBots when the energon cloud hit the mall. Although all the BotBots were playfully competitive, Spud Muffin believed he deserved to be the leader of the Hunger Hubs, but was constantly frustrated at being known as Burgertron's sidekick. This would eventually grow to the point that he purposefully diverted Burgertron into the Lost and Found during a sliding race in the mall's air vents, hoping that the stunt would end the cheeseburger's life. Unfortunately, not only did Burgertron survive, but he also managed to return with the 4 Lost Bots, who would prove to be quite a hinderance to BotBot society. After the Lost Bots managed to almost fully expose themselves and Burgertron to Dave the mall guard, Spud Muffin wasted no chance he got and evicted the cheeseburger bot from the Hunger Hubs for breaking the BotBots' most sacred rule. This marked the start of Burgertron's time as a Lost Bot, and Spud Muffin would later continue to prevent the quintet of pariahs from redeeming themselves.
In his next notable scheme, Spud Muffin all but sabotaged the Bot Prom by rescuing Dave from a foam pit with a velvet line rope. The Lost Bots ultimately got the blame for letting Dave get so close to the event, and despite Bonz-Eye discovering the french fry grease on the rope used, Ulf wasn't convinced when Burgertron told her, as the mall guard's slovenly eating habits meant that he could've easily eaten some fries before falling into the pit.
A few days had passed before Spud Muffin came up with his next scheme, and it centered around an unwitting Sprinkleberry D'hnut. Tracking him down towards the mall's daycare area, Spud left a small patch of salt in front of the donut bot, causing him to lose balance, fall, and land on a ring-stack toy, unable to move. Spud would then use a remote-controlled car to push a donut to Dave's desk, where the guard enthusiastically munched it. This was all filmed using a camera, and Spud would place a hamburger atop the car while doing so to make the others believe Burgertron committed the supposed murderous deed when the footage was viewed. The plan worked, and Spud used the court review in an attempt to further discredit Burgertron... only for Kikmee and Bonz-Eye to arrive with a rescued Sprinkleberry just as Vomit Comet was to deliver the verdict. With the frame job scenario essentially unraveled, Spud brushed it off with a promise to look into it, cementing the distraction with a dance party. The other bots are quickly drawn in as Spud begins a victory dance, though Bonz-Eye could see he was shedding salt as he celebrating.
Burgertron's constant successes in remaining at the mall eventually led Spud Muffin to creating the Goldrush Games, a competition sports event that results in the losers being sent away on a truck leaving the mall. To further set the stage, he forced Brock O' Lonely to use a golden robotic suit to pose as the Games Master, a golden BotBot responsible for the Goldrush Games. To cover Brock's absence, Spud made the alibi that the broccoli bot was simply on vacation. With the setup complete, Spud set the Goldrush Games into motion, with himself in participation, but to everyone's surprise the Lost Bots actually made good progress and advanced by quite a large margin. Although the method in which Burgertron pulled off the qualifying run was questioned, it was deemed legal, and as a part of his plan, Spud invited Burgertron back to the Hunger Hubs. The other Hunger Hubs convinced the cheeseburger bot to accept, but although Burgertron wasn't aware of it yet, Spud Muffin planned on kicking him out of the Hunger Hubs again the moment the Lost Bots were to be exiled permanently. Unfortunately, Spud makes the mistake of acting aggressive towards Burgertron's more relaxed attitude and he gave scrambled descriptions of Brock's supposed vacation areas, giving clues that cause Burgertron's mind to start thinking.
When Burgertron enters the final event, Spud angrily demands the cheeseburger bot leave Dimlit to lose, barging in and forcibly ending the competition when he refuses. When Spud threatens to banish Burgertron, the former member of the Hunger Hubs accepts this fate, having had enough of the french fry bot's abusive nature. He then exclaims that the mall guard is coming, scaring everyone into transforming. However, this is just a ruse, and Burgertron is given the opening to expose the Games Master as Brock, the broccoli bot confirming Burgertron's theories about the Goldrush Games. His plans revealed, Spud goes mad and finally admits his attempts to end Burgertron's life in the society of the BotBots, showing his true colors in the process. However, the other BotBots began transforming, and although Spud believes they are cowering at him, the sound of Dave's voice quickly makes him realize that he left himself open to be seen by the mall guard, who quickly picks him up to talk to him. Believing the fry bot to be Burgertron's sidekick, Dave has Spud tell the cheeseburger bot his thanks amongst other news before setting him down and walking off.
With Dave robbing him of his one and only saving grace, Spud finds the other BotBots transforming and ganging up on him in fury and disgust; having broken their society's most sacred rule on top of all of his other atrocities, the other BotBots intend on banishing Spud from the mall permanently as punishment for actions. However, the Lost Bots prevent the mob from reaching him, and having learned many morals from the Lost Bots, Burgertron convinces the other BotBots to give Spud Muffin an alternate penalty, one that ensures that the french fry bot will still have a chance at redemption. Spud ends up exiled to the dark side of the mall, forced to live out in a barren and abandoned part of the building until the others deem him worthy of rejoining them. Making his way through nervously, Spud screams out in horror as one of the talking dolls in the area calls out his name, as we don't know if the dolls are going to kill him or not.
With Spud no longer in the way and his misdemeanors finally known, the other BotBots, now apologetic about everything, reaccept and respect Burgertron again and accept the Lost Bots officially as part their society after proving their worth, giving the Lost Bots the chance to fulfill their goals (joining the squads where they belong). Having grown somewhat inseparable though, after all the events they’ve been through together, Burgertron, on the Lost Bots' behalf, gives the new option of making the Lost Bots an official squad. This idea was accepted almost unanimously, and the others celebrated the newly formed official squad’s acceptance as they party on and look forward towards a brighter future- without Spud interfering.
Trivia[]
- Spud Muffin wasn't a villain when he was made with the other bots in 2018. In fact, the comics and stories show him as a good bot. The series decided to make him one amongst many changes to other characters in order to give him more character.
