Squareonthehypothenus is the secondary antagonist of the Asterix comic book The Mansions of the Gods and its animated adaptation.

He is a professional Roman architect and a loyal and devoted follower of Julius Caesar, the dictator of Rome. Squareonthehypothenus is famously remembered for building flats that have never fallen down and is also the founder of various other buildings he had built.

In the 2014 animated film adaptation Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods, he was voiced by Lorànt Deutsch in the French dub and by Richard Ian Cox in the English dub.

Personality[]

When Squareonthehypothenus first appeared, he appears to be a shy, young man who is proud of his achievements. He is also shown to be completely loyal to Caesar and will do anything to appease him.

However, in further appearances, while he was in charge of building the Mansions of the Gods, he is shown to be short-tempered and quick-to-anger. This, combined with his striving to smooth things over, makes him a tyrannical authoritarian, who is prone to abusing his power by mistreating his slaves, in which he forced them to work until dawn. His intimidation can also be very brutal and venomous; an example is when he threatened to skin the slaves alive if they don't work.

Combined with his short-temper and his determination to complete the Mansions of the Gods, he became more unstable when his efforts were secretly hindered by Asterix and Obelix, and this leads Squareonthehypothenus to work the slaves to death, showing how erratic he has become. However, he would later stabilize himself when he slowly began to have more control of himself, though he retains his quick temper.

Despite this, Squareonthehypothenus proved to be cunning and scheming, as he accordingly followed with Caesar's plan in an attempt to force the indomitable Gauls to adapt to Roman Civilization. However, this was crushed after he rashly evicted Cacofonix from the mansions, which the Gauls did not take kindly, as they see it as a slight. Squareonthehypothenus is also shown to intolerate people who would walk into private property, as when he tried to deal with the Gauls as they are about to destroy the apartment building where the legions of Camp Aquarium are staying at.

After the Gauls, in their vengeance, raided the mansions as well as destroying it, Squareonthehypothenus came to realize on how invasive the Gauls are and eventually lost faith that Roman legions could defeat them to the point where he believed that Julius Caesar will deal with them. This now shows that despite his strong loyalty to Caesar, it now appears to have its limits.

Trivia[]

  • The English name Squareonthehypothenus is a reference to the Pythagorean Theorem, which states that in a right-angled triangle, the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides. In other words, a2+b2=c2.
