Valchek: Well, here's the thing, Father Lew says he could take another window in the rectory. On the second floor.
Sobotka: Good for you.
Valchek: No, good for you, Frank. You don't want my finger in your eye. You better do what's right here.

Stanislaus Valchek is a supporting antagonist in HBO's The Wire. He is a senior member of the Baltimore Police Department who routinely hinders police work in order to pursue his petty feuds. He is also the father-in-law of Roland Pryzbylewski.

He is portrayed by the late Al Brown.

Biography[]

Background[]

Valchek is Polish-American. He is a senior member of the BPD and is the commander of the Southeast District by the start of the series. At some point, Valchek's daughter, Joan, married Roland Pryzbylewski. It's implied that Prez got his position in the BPD due to nepotism by Valchek, despite Valchek telling his daughter not to marry Prez.

Season 1[]

Prez, Valchek's son-in-law, gets drunk with his fellow police officers Herc and Carver and decides to raid the high rises (controlled by the Barksdale Organization) despite being vastly outnumbered and unprepared. When Prez pistol-whips a drug hopper in the face, blinding him in one eye, it initiates a firefight that ends up landing Prez in hot water with his superiors. In the wake of the incident, Valchek meets with Commissioner Burrell and Lieutenant Daniels to use his connections to bail out Prez.

Season 2[]

Valchek tries to donate a stained glass window to a local Catholic church, but he discovers that Stevedore treasurer Frank Sobotka donated a larger, more expensive window that had already been installed where Valchek wants his window to be. He confronts Sobotka and gets aggressive with him, but Sobotka refuses to withdraw his window. Valchek becomes suspicious as to how Sobotka is able to afford such an expensive window, which he uses as an excuse to pursue his feud over the window. His suspicions turn out to be correct, as The Greek has been paying Sobotka to assist in his smuggling operation through the Baltimore docks.

Trivia[]

  • The relationship between Valchek and Prez parallels the relationship between Proposition Joe and Cheese. Despite having told his daughter not to marry Prez, Valchek still uses his connections to bail Prez out of trouble, much like how Proposition Joe gives Cheese favors despite not thinking very highly of him.
