Carol Ferris, also known as Star Sapphire, is a major character in the DC Comics universe. Carol is Hal's boss and love interest who was chosen to become Star Sapphire. She is a former supervillainess and an enemy turned ally of Green Lantern and the Justice League, as well as a member of the Violet Lantern Corps.
The Star Sapphire alias has been used by several women over the years, but is most often associated with Carol, who is currently a heroic bearer of the title. Dela Pharon became the Zamarons' second choice for queen, while Remoni-Notra aka Deborah Darnell, just wanted power. Hal Jordan's old flame Jillian Pearlman was simply overwhelmed by the gem itself as it sought to discover which woman Hal loved the most.
History[]

The original Star Sapphire
Golden Age Star Sapphire was an alien invader who fought The Flash. She was later reinvented as Carol Ferris in Showcase #22 (1959). Carol had no time for love, despite being torn between affection for test pilot Hal Jordan and being attracted to the hero Green Lantern.
This emotional conflict led to mayhem after she was selected by warriors of an extraterrestrial matriarchy to wear the all-powerful Star Sapphire. With the gem, all Carol's subconscious desires could be realized and she repeatedly attacked the Green Lantern, determined to bend him to her will. As Star Sapphire, she harnessed love's light, a light that affected Carol's mind after a time, even creating a subconscious third personality, named Predator. "He" drove her to brutality and murder, and was later revealed as a physical manifestation of the Entity embodying the accumulation of universal love.

The Predator Entity
In Green Lantern (Vol. 2) #73&74, Carol's love for Hal together with Star Sapphire's increasing mental instability enable Sinestro to use her as a deadly weapon in an attack on their mutual foe; the Green Lantern. In Superman #261, following a bizarre misunderstanding, the lethally protective but mentally muddled Star Sapphire launches an attack on Superman, believing that the Man of Steel has harmed her chosen consort, Green Lantern. In Action Comics #601, under the influence of the ruthless Predator Entity, Star Sapphire kills Green Lantern Katma Tui to send a message to Hal, devastating John Stewart in the process.
Eventually, she was freed from the entity, but when the War of Light brought all shades of the Emotional Spectrum into conflict, the alien Zamarons sought a new path to universal love, asking Carol to lead their Star Sapphire Corps. Now wearing a Star Sapphire power ring, Carol thrived as a hero, battling against the marauding Sinestro Corps and the ghastly risen dead of the Black Lanterns. She even reformed the uncontrolled passions of the Predator Entity, creating a more benign and positive aspect of love.
Following valiant participation in the coming of the White Entity of Life on the Brightest Day event and during the War of the Lanterns, Carol joined Kyle Rayner's multidenominational band of Spectrum Warriors as a New Guardian. Her long-held feelings for Hal Jordan began to waver, as she found herself increasingly drawn to Rayner. Carol eventually broke away from both Jordan and White Lantern Rayner to chart her own course. While Hal returned home to Earth recently to seemingly rekindle his relationship with Carol, it seemed just another fling that was destined not to last.
Star Sapphire Corps[]
“ | For hearts long lost and full of fright, For those alone in blackest night, Accept our ring and join our fight, Love conquers all—with violet light! | „ |
~ The Star Sapphires' unique oath |
A multi-species group of females empowered by love, the Star Sapphires were created by the immortal women of Maltus. Having broken away from their emotion-suppressing males in the wake of Krona's wounding of the cosmic fabric, the Zamarons sought to ease universal conflict, using love to soothe aggression. Initially they employed violet crystals, but these ultimately proved wild and attuned to love's darker side. Eventually they were equipped with power rings using the refined Light of Love broadcast from a Central Power Battery. The Star Sapphire Corps also use conversion crystals to envelop resistant or hostile targets, gradually reprogramming potential recruits to pursue the interests of love at all costs. Until recently all members were female, except for Guy Gardner, who briefly found love on his odyssey through the Emotional Spectrum.
