Carol Ferris, better known as Star Sapphire, was a supporting antagonist in the DC Animated Universe, appearing as a supporting antagonist in Justice League and a minor antagonist in the sequel series Justice League Unlimited.

She was a super-villainess with the ability to create energy constructs and laser beams (not dissimilar from Green Lantern) via the mystical purple sapphire kept in her mask.

She was voiced by Oliver d'Abo, who also played Morgan Le Fey in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, Ten in Batman Beyond, Tak in Invader Zim, Queen La in The Legend of Tarzan, Milena in Stolen from Suburbia, and Nicole Wallace in Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Biography[]

Justice League[]

Star Sapphire was invited to join the Injustice Gang formed by Lex Luthor to plot the Justice League's destruction. At first, she is repelled by the idea of working with "common criminals", but seems to warm up to the amount of money that Luthor promises each of them if they succeed. In the groups first battle with the League, Star Sapphire fights Hawkgirl, Batman and Wonder Woman.

Later on, she helped ferry the Shade and Solomon Grundy to the Watchtower to plant a bomb, but the plot was foiled due to Ultra-Humanite secretly tipping off the heroes. When Luthor took his anger out on them, Star Sapphire was the first to declare she was quitting, but like the others, agreed to stay after Luthor promised to triple their original fee. In the Injustice Gang's final battle with the Justice League, she takes on John Stewart and gets accidentally knocked out by a cartoon duck statue that Grundy had thrown while fighting Superman. Green Lantern remarks that Sapphire should've listened when he warned her to "duck".

Sometime after escaping from prison, Star Sapphire is recruited to the Injustice Gang's second incarnation led by Aresia and assisted in various robberies. When Aresia reveals her agenda to rid the world men, Sapphire is initially shocked, but enthusiastically goes along with it. While aligned with this Injustice Gang, successfully tricks Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl into believing that she still wants to live in a world with men by luring the two women into a trap, subduing both them and Queen Hippolyta. As Aresia prepared to launch a biological weapon, Star Sapphire said she could say goodbye to some very unpleasant men she knew. However, as Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl attacked Aresia's plane, Star Sapphire was eventually defeated by Wonder Woman, who wrenched one of the plane's laser cannons free from its housing and hurled it into Star Sapphire, sending them both plunging to the sea. However, her personal force field saved her from drowning.

After Superman was allegedly killed by Toyman, Star Sapphire attacked Metropolis along with Copperhead, Deadshot, Kalibak, Livewire, and Volcana. She and the others are eventually defeated by the Justice League and self proclaimed new League member Lobo.

Justice League Unlimited[]

She later joined the new and improved Secret Society of Super Villains, which was originally spearheaded by Grodd until Lex Luthor (her former employer) usurped his position as leader. During the mutiny led by Grodd, Sapphire sided with Luthor, and thus was among the survivors (since she and Sinestro use their powers to create a force field which protects their team) who arrive on Earth in time to warn of Darkseid's impending invasion. She later joined the rest of the Secret Society and the Justice League in fighting off the forces of Apokolips, and fends off Parademons with her energy blasts over the Great Wall of China beside Wonder Woman, Shining Knight and Vigilante. During the battle, she was struck unconscious by a beam from an Apokoliptan cannon, but is saved from falling to her death by Shining Knight.

After Darkseid is defeated, Sapphire and the surviving members of the Secret Society are given a "five-minute head start" by Batman as courtesy for helping the League save the Earth.

Trivia[]

According to the creative team of Justice League, the animated Star Sapphire is based on Carol Ferris. That being the case, it is uncertain why they cast English actress, Olivia d'Abo, to voice her, since Ferris is American.
- Ironically, D'Abo also voiced Star Sapphire in the 2012 animated film Justice League Doom, but this time with an American accent.
