Starscream, originally known as Ulchar, is a major antagonist in Image comics'/Skybound's Energon Universe, serving as the main antagonist of the first arc of the Transformers comic book series. He is the sadistic leader of the Decepticons, who has taken over from the MIA Megatron and is leading them in a battle against the heroic Autobots.
Biography[]
Starscream was a member of the Decepticons serving under Megatron. Before he was a Decepticon, he was known as "Ulchtar" and was friends with two Cybertronians, Jetfire and Genvo. Jetfire had to leave in order to "explore the stars" and find a solution to the brutal conflict that was occurring on Cybertron. The three had one last night together seeing the stars and a giant yet ancient Cybertronian drifting across the sky. The three friends viewed it before Jetfire left to steal ammunition from the Cybertronian defense forces, with the two others following him. However, they were quickly interrupted from a Cybertronian officer who they escaped from. After evading the officer, Jetfire proclaimed to his friends that he had to go, and explained that every second he waited was another second Cybertron was close to its demise. The three shared an embrace before Jetfire departed. As Jetfire departed, Genvo - who it's revealed he was branding the symbol of a Decepticon, reassured his friend that he still had him. Suddenly, the Autobots infiltrated the building, shooting Ulchtar and knocking him down. As his friend helped him get back up, the Autobots, Ulchtar, and Genvo engaged in a chase before Genvo was shot with a piercing round. As Genvo lied in his arms, he proclaimed to Ulchtar that he did it, that he "screamed the stars" into seeing the two. As he carried his late friend's body out of the rubble, he wondered what was "left now" for him and his friend. He was stopped by Megatron, who pointed out the Decepticon symbol on Genvo's corpse, saying that he can avenge his friend and by extension, his clan. Giving Ulchtar a pistol, Megatron asks what his brothers called him. His eyes turning red, his transformation into Starscream was now complete as he utters his new name.
A flashback is then shown of Starscream battling the Autobots with Megatron. Megatron holds the autobots hostage, and offers them the chance to become Decepticons, to which they refuse. Megatron orders Starscream to execute the, to which he refuses. However, Megatron scolds him. Suddenly, Starscream hears mysterious voices in his head urging him not to fight Megatron's orders and to instead comply. With cold eyes, he brutally executes one of them, leaving his corpse lying on the ground. The remaining two plead with them not to execute him, but he apologizes before shooting them. A panel is then shown of him executing several Autobots. Initially he does it with a frown, then a smile, then with great pleasure and a laugh.
At some point in the past, Starscream and the rest of the Decepticons attacked the Autobots on their ship, but the ship crashed down onto Earth, putting all the Cybertroninans on board into stasis lock.
The ship and the Transformers were later found by humans Spike Witwicky and his girlfriend Carly. Just seconds later, a Cybertronian named Jetfire arrived on the ship and activated Teletraan 1, which then reactivated Starscream. The Decepticon's first action upon reawakening was to execute the Autobot Bumblebee while he was still in stasis lock to prove that everyone is expendable. When Jetfire takes an aversion to this, Starscream relishes in being evil and shoots him as well.
Starscream attempts to execute the rest of the deactivated Autobots, but his attempts were foiled by the also reactivated Optimus Prime. Starscream, alongside the reactivated Skywarp and Soundwave, engages in a shootout with Optimus and fellow reactivated Autobot Ratchet. Optimus manages to blow up Teletraan in an attempt to stop more Decepticons from being reactivated.
During an attempt to harvest more Energon, Starscream attacks a power plant where Spike and Carly's fathers are working. During the attack, Starscream grabs Carly's dad and crushes him in his hand.
Starscream eventually returns to the power plant, now with Soundwave and Skywarp by his side. A policeman attempts to stop them, but he is crushed under Starscream's foot.
Two fighter pilot jets then show up at the plant and attempt to shoot down the Decepticons. He shoots down one of the jets and crushes the pilot with his hands. He attempts to kill the jet's passenger, but he gives up after being shot in the eye.
After Spike is injured in a battle between Optimus, Skywarp and a small group of vigilantes led by Spike's father, Optimus attempts to take him to the hospital. Starscream attempts to intercept them but is run over by Optimus in his truck form.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Starscream shoots at its generators, causing the power to go offline and he and Soundwave then engage in a short firefight with the Autobots. The Decepticons later return to the Autobot ship. Starscream demands that his injuries be fixed, but Soundwave points out they need to repair Teletraan and that they can only do so with Cybertronian parts. The two of them turn to the injured Skywarp and rip the Seeker apart to get his parts.
Starscream later uses the rebuilt Teletraan to bring Reflector back to life and then proclaims he'll be Decepticon leader "Today! Tomorrow! Forever!"
After kicking Soundwave's pet, Ravage for sadistic pleasure, he is brutally slashed and left for dead by Soundwave who leaves him abandoned on the side of a cliff. He was found crawling on his knees by M.A.R.S , who proceeded to tug him with chains and tie them to the back of their utility vehicle.
Starscream awakened, with the lower half of his body now being welded to a mining vehicle. He was furious at M.A.Rs, and slammed his fist on the ground exclaiming what they had done to him. He attempting to attack one of the personnel's cat, but failed. M.A.R.S told him that they would help him get the help he needed, to which he denied, saying that he did not need anyone's help. M.A.R.S warned him to exercise caution, as they had put an explosive device within him that would explode him from the inside out if he did not comply. The person speaking to him then introduced himself as Horton and asked him to lead the way, to which he complied.
He spots Astrotrain in the distance and asks how he got away from Megatron. Astrotrain tells Starscream that Soundwave freed him. Starscream then expresses disappointment on his face before shooting Astrotrain's chains. Starscream scolds Astrotrain, proclaiming that Soundwave has lied to him and that once Soundwave is finished using Astrotrain, he will put him "back in storage to rust". Starscream then explains that unlike Soundwave, he has no loyalty to a fallen leader. He asks Astrotrain to join him, saying that he will let him have his revenge against him. He is suddenly interrupted by a piece of Cybertron falling into the ocean, creating a massive tidal wave. The humans begin running, and Astrotrain asks him if he's partnered with the "weaklings". He nods, explaining to Astrotrain that they saved him from certain death. Astrotrain suggests to leave them to die, to which Starscream objects. Astrotrain then transforms into his alt-mode and Starscream rushes to get inside. However, Horton stops him. Starscream tells Horton that he is working on a way to get them out of there. Starscream shows a smile, telling Horton that he saved him, therefore he should return the favor. M.A.R.S and Starscream escape from the tidal wave. However, Horton is still angry. Starscream asks him what's wrong, to which Horton reminds him that he's still in charge. They notice the Combaticons struggling within the tidal wave, and Starscream gives a hand to them. Horton remains furious at Starscream, and orders him to take them down to the surface. Starscream obeys the order, but tells him that he needs to make a quick "pit stop". Astrotrain makes a rough landing, hurting everybody on board. Horton is shocked at seeing Starscream's team finally assembled together. Starscream tells his team that he is honoured by the praise, but that they need to focus on more important things such as taking down Soundwave. The Combaticons agree with Starscream, noting that Soundwave is a traitor. Fed up with Starscream, Horton yells at him, saying that this was not part of the plan. He threatens Starscream with the failsafe. Starscream mocks him, telling him to go "right ahead". Horton presses the failsafe, however it is no use. The rest of the M.A.R.S team apologizes to Horton, explaining that Starscream would let them go home if he pulled out the explosive charges. The Mars team begins to run away, and Starscream targets Horton first - blowing his right arm clean off. One of the M.A.Rs operatives pleads for his life. Starscream does not forgive him, reminding him that they "made" him a "slave". He calls the action forgivable before squishing the operative with his wheels. He orders Private Martin to start sketching. He then proclaims to the other Decepticons that he shall be the master of his own destiny, and the captain of his own fate, and that the earth will be his.
Eventually Starscream, and the Combaticons finally met with their former Decepticon brethren led by Soundwave, Thundercracker amongst the dam where they found the Autobot rebuilding themselves.
Starscream assembled the troops, Onslaught praised Starscream for decided to have Brawl be repaired, commands the Combaticons form into Bruticus. As Devastator and Bruticus fight, Starscream fights Thundercracker and Soundwave, Starscream reveals to Thundercracker that he and Soundwave used Skywarp to rebuild Teletraan 1, in order to survive, Thundercracker takes this chance to steal Starscream's remote control for his H.I.S.S tank machine and forcing him into the water, as he found and fights Soundwave. Optimus Prime urges them all to stop, but Starscream calls him an infant, admitting he doesn't care for the humans. Resulting in Prime aggressively firing a beam into the heart of the dam and causing a tectonic release of water that engulfs all of the Decepticons.
