Stefan Salvatore is one of the main protagonists of The Vampire Diaries franchise.
He was a major antagonist in The Vampire Diaries, being one of the secondary antagonists in season 2 and an overarching antagonist in seasons 3-5.
He is a young vampire who aims to protect Mystic Falls and his friends from the great evils that throughout the season are happening, but his villainous position in season 2 stands out, killing and mutilating innocents due to the loss of their humanity.
He was portrayed by Paul Wesley, who also played Silas in the same series and Lucas Luthor in Smallville.
Personality[]
Human[]
Stefan was considered an ideal young man, compassionate, honorable, intelligent, and athletic, and was loved by women due to his chivalry and romanticism. He had a close relationship with his father Giuseppe and his brother Damon. Stefan was a bit of an idealist and easily fell for Katherine Pierce, which showed his youth and naivety as a normal teenager. Despite being only 17 years old, Stefan displayed maturity and responsibility, which made him seem much older than his actual age.
In 2017, Stefan Salvatore receives the Cure and becomes human again. He is overwhelmed with guilt for the horrible things he did when he was a servant of Arcadius and then killed Enzo. He tries to make things right with Bonnie and kill Arcadius, but ultimately redeemed his actions by transferring the cure to Damon and sacrificing himself to ensure Katherine stays in Hell when Bonnie destroys it with hellfire.
Vampire[]
Stefan retained much of his human persona after becoming a vampire, though his basic traits were significantly intensified. Although he became increasingly dark due to his vampiric nature, Stefan was still mysterious, inscrutable, compassionate, heroic, noble, brave, intelligent, and loyal. Yet he could also be self-deprecating, self-destructive, tormenting, and self-critical. Since he became a vampire, Stefan lived a more complex life and faced many challenges.
Stefan was a certified "blood addict" due to his addiction to blood. When he consumed large amounts of human blood, his attitude changed and he became unstable, volatile, unpredictable, and destructive. He often shuts off his humanity and emotions to block his suffering, guilt, and pain. Stefan was extremely dependent on Damon after he was recently turned into a vampire, which was not the case when he was human.
Stefan initially felt optimistic about spending eternity with his brother Damon, but Damon shattered those hopes by promising Stefan a life of misery. Stefan later apologized to Damon for betraying him and admitted that he was selfish in making Damon complete his transition.
Stefan had a deep concern for humanity and often felt immense guilt if he harmed or killed a human. Emily Bennett once told Stefan that his heart was pure and good, causing much of the self-loathing associated with his personality.
Stefan is a caring, loving, helpful, empathetic and compassionate person who cares deeply for humanity and human life. He is wise, comforting, and always willing to help others. Stefan is honorable, noble, courageous, courageous, selfless and selfless. He can also be funny and mischievous with his close friends. Stefan sacrificed his life and his humanity to save his beloved brother Damon. He can be sarcastic at times and has a soft spot for alcohol.
Stefan was charismatic, charming, passionate and deeply romantic, making him very magnetic and popular with the opposite sex. He had an unselfish and idealistic approach to love and was respectful, polite, courteous and chivalrous with women. He was admired and loved by women even in his human life.
Stefan's love for Elena Gilbert showcased how his values and perspective of life had significantly changed and how affectionate, understanding and loving he could be. Stefan believed in the importance of values such as respect, honesty, trust and the freedom of choice when it came to love and relationships. He emphasized the significance of free will, freedom, choice, and respect for one's decisions.
Without memory[]
After Tessa erased Stefan's memories to remove Silas' mental powers, his personality changed significantly for a time. She became more sociable, bold and showed a sarcastic and mocking sense of humor. He also showed less reluctance to dance in public and felt confused about not feeding on people as a vampire.
However, with his memories of him intact, Stefan had moral and practical reservations about feeding on blood and constantly refrained for fear of losing control and killing. Interestingly, this initial behavior of Stefan with no memory was similar to when he was turned into a vampire in 1864, as he was in awe of being a vampire and tried to accept it.
After losing his memories, Stefan experienced changes in his personality, such as a decrease in his seriousness and melancholy, and an increased sociability and frankness. He showed little reluctance to dance in public and his sense of humor became more sarcastic.
He also became more dismissive of his past victims and more inclined to feed on people. Although he retained his intelligence and logical nature, he also showed remorse for his past actions and his monstrosity. However, he was still attracted to Elena and kept the caring and kind inside of her.
After Elena revealed that she was dating Damon, Stefan was confused and hurt that he didn't know sooner. He impulsively tried to attack Jesse and said that he saw no point in being good if he had nothing to show for it. This was a big difference from the Stefan who had memories of him, who kept his morality despite Elena's choice.
After the incident where Stefan tried to attack Jesse, he was cold and distant towards Elena and Damon, stating that he wanted to forge his own path away from them and only trusted his friend Caroline. However, he later confronted Tessa to protect Elena and demonstrated her heroic and chivalrous disposition. Although he was reluctant to get close to Elena and Damon again, he still cared for them and Elena noted that he was still himself to some degree, since her first instinct had always been to protect her.
Powers and Abilities[]
Stefan has all of the typical physical and mental abilities of a vampire. But being almost 200 years old, Stefan has shown himself to be quite powerful. As the ripper of Monterey, Stefan built up a reputation for himself as being one of the most ruthless and dangerous vampires in history. After turning over a new leaf and only feeding on animals as opposed to choosing to not harm humans anymore, Stefan’s powers have gotten weaker, allowing him to be overpowered by the likes of his brother Damon. But even a small taste of human blood can send Stefan into a frenzy, which makes Damon fear him greatly.
- Superhuman Strength: Like all vampires, Stefan is far stronger than humans and werewolves. Back when he was the ripper of Monterey, Stefan fed on so much blood, that Damon refused to go anywhere near him, knowing he would have lost if he tried to fight his brother. When Stefan became a better person, he stopped feeding on people and his strength diminished, while Damon’s strength increased dramatically. After agreeing to work for Cade and turning off his humanity, Stefan became the ripper once again, and gained his old strength back. This allowed him to overpower Damon on more than one occasion.
- Superhuman Speed: As a vampire, Stefan is both fast and silent. He can enter and exit an area in mere seconds, all without making any noise whatsoever. This allows Stefan to perform sneak attacks on his opponents and end the fight before it even starts.
- Superhuman Endurance: Stefan doesn’t feel pain as he is already dead. When he cut his hand, he didn’t even flinch.
- Advanced Healing Factor: Vampires can heal from injures far faster than humans as long as the damage isn’t too severe, to the point of amputation.
- Mind Compulsion: Stefan like all vampires can mesmerize humans to make them do whatever he desires. Stefan is also quite skilled with this power, as shown when he was able to mind control Liam Grant back in the 20’s. Whereas most vampires use mind compulsion by standing only a couple inches away from their target, Stefan was able to compel Liam from a couple feet.
- Immortality: Stefan as a vampire is immortal and will live forever, unless he is killed. He cannot get sick or tired, and the older he gets, the stronger his abilities become.
- Master Combatant: As a former soldier and having nearly 2 centuries of experience under his belt, Stefan is a highly skilled and very dangerous fighter. He has defeated the likes of Damon, Tyler, Silas, and even managed to fend off Klaus Mikaelson from time to time. Stefan was also able to hold his own against the vampire huntress whose soul purpose was to kill vampires.
- Charisma: Stefan, like Damon, is extremely handsome, confident and charming, allowing him to get practically any girl he wants. Bonnie Bennett, Caroline Forbes and Elena Gilbert all fell for Stefan the moment they saw him. Even strong willed women like Katherine Pierce and Rebekah Mikaelson fell in love with Stefan and tried repeatedly to get back together with him.
