Stephan Joos is a minor antagonist in Naoki Urasawa's Monster. Originally an orphan from Kinderheim 511, he would later become a serial killer and rapist who would meet his demise after being shot by Detective Richard Braun.
Biography[]
Like Johan, Joos grew up in the Kinderheim 511 orphanage where he was subjected to horrific experimentation. Assuming what Johan said is true, it was like hell on Earth for him and caused him to go insane. After graduating from Kinderheim, he became a criminal who raped and murdered 9 women at the age of 17. He was shot down by detective Richard Braun, with whether or not this was self-defense being left ambiguous. According to an eyewitness, however, it was reported that Joos had put down his weapon and surrendered.
Richard got drunk afterwards and convinced himself that he had been intoxicated when he killed him. He was then kicked off the force and became estranged from his family. He would become haunted by killing Stephan for years and develop a drinking addiction, leading him to seeing the counselor Dr. Reichwein for advice. Richard was on the path to healing until Johan psychologically tormented him and blamed Richard for the murder of Stephan.
