Steve Johnson is the main antagonist of "Death Tome", the second segment of The Simpsons Halloween special "Treehouse of Horror XXIII".
He is a Shinigami who left out his Death Note to the world of humans for anyone to use, having been picked up Lisa Simpson, he decides to manipulate her to go on a killing spree.
He is inspired by Ryuk from the original series and is voiced by Hank Azaria.
Biography[]
Steve first appears after Lisa committed her first murder with the Death Tome on Jailbird when he was taking a cat as a hostage, with Lisa concluding that since she killed a criminal, this makes her a hero. Steve tells Lisa that since she already wrote on the book, it's her property now, and can continue to spread justice by killing those who are criminals, mentioning that it is addicting as plastic surgery.
Going downstairs of Lisa's house, she encounters her parents having a discussion with Mr. Burns whom he exclaims that he plans to melt the polar ice cap with his company Globo-Warm, which has Lisa exclaim that she has to stop him by writing his name on the book. She writes him dying peacefully in his sleep, but he tumbles on a grill and burns his face off, which kills him.
Steve later reminds Lisa that there are still many members on the company Globo-Warm, and encourages her to kill as many as she wants to save the world from the company, which Lisa does, coming up with many methods of killing them each time. Steve also reminds him that there's a second page of employees, and Lisa repeats the process again.
The next day, the supposed accidents that Lisa caused are reported as murders, with somebody called L reporting that whoever was killing the employees of Globo-Warm was doing so through a magical book that every time someone wrote the name of someone, that person would die. Lisa would try and write the name of L on it, but Steve would remind him that she has to write the full real name of that someone to kill them.
Shortly after, Lisa would recognize that the L on the detective's name is not really an L, but an El for "El Barto". This makes her brother Bart Simpson come out of the shadows of an alleyway. He revealed that he knew how she was killing those people because he read her diary.
Enraged, Lisa seems to be ready to write the name of Bart into the Death Tome, which causes Steve to sadistically laugh for it. However a sattellite to come crashing into Steve, with Lisa revealing that she actually wrote his name on the Death Tome, with his final words being a loud no in desperation.
Trivia[]
- This version of Ryuk is a bit more malicious than the original version, as while Ryuk was more than amused of Light Yagami killing so many people, Steve is actually rather sadistic as he laughs when he thought Lisa was going to write Bart's name on the Death Tome.
- In the original Death Note series, it is stated that shinigami cannot be killed by the notebook, meaning that had this took place in the original series' universe, Steve would not have died after Lisa wrote his name in the tome.
