I’m not going anywhere until you tell me where the fuck Judy is.
~ Steve Wood asking Judy Hale’s whereabouts to Jen Harding.
I don’t know why the fuck you’re protecting her. She just feels sorry for you. Poor little widow, all alone, cheating husband. Boy, he was miserable, wasn’t he? You are one mean fucking bitch. He was looking for a way out, honey.
~ Steve tormenting Jen about her husband’s death, and his last words.

Steve Wood is the main antagonist of Season 1 of Netflix series Dead to Me.

He was Judy Hale’s (one of the two protagonists) ex-fiancé and shady lawyer involved in criminal activities with the local Greek mafia to launder money.

He was portrayed by James Marsden.

Biography[]

Season 1[]

Steve is introduced to the audience as the ex husband of Judy Hale, one of the show's two protagonists, the other being Jen Harding. One night, Judy and Steve were in the former's car with her driving and ended up hitting Ted, Jen's husband, who was going for a walk. Steve pressured Judy to drive off and leave Ted (despite her wanting to stay and help him) and so she did and Ted died. Throughout the first season, Steve is shown trying to prevent the truth of Ted's death coming to light because he is concerned that he may be legally punished for his part in it. He attempts to get rid of the 66 mustang Judy was driving and is openly against Judy befriending Jen and living with her as a method of making amends, worried that it might lead her to find out what happened.

It is revealed that Steve has been laundering money for a Greek mafia, showing that he is a corrupt and unethical businessman.

Toward the end of the season, Judy remorsefully confesses to Jen that it was her and Steve who hit Ted. As a result Steve gets incredibly afraid of his role in Ted's death coming to light, so he makes it clear to Judy that he will no longer consider the potential consequences to her and only look out for himself.

Judy also feels remorse for not telling anyone about Steve's money laundering so reports him to the police in the finale. Steve then tries to find her and tries Jen's house. There, Jen reveals that Judy had told her she hit Ted and caused his death, and Steve leaks that he himself was in the car with her. Jen figures out that Judy would not have left Ted to die of her own choice and that Steve must have made her do so. She holds Steve at gunpoint and orders him to leave her property, but Steve doesn't feel threatened by her. He taunts Jen by lying to her that Ted jumped in front of the car on purpose because he was sick of her and aggressively demands Jen to tell him where Judy is. Jen refuses, annoying Steve and so he walks away. Jen then beats the back of his head brutally with a wooden bird and then accidentally tosses him into the pool. Jen leaves Steve there and so he drowns and dies.

Season 2[]

In the second season, Steve's disappearance is investigated by the local police force, and Jen and Judy work to cover up the truth. Steve's twin brother, Ben, arrives in town to try and find him.

Steve's mother is shown worried sick by his disappearance. It is also stated that Steve was her favourite child in oppose to Ben. After Jen and Judy burry Steve's corpse in Los Angeles wood, his body is found and he is confirmed dead. Ben and the family are devastated by this.

Season 3[]

At the end of the third season, Judy makes a false confession to murdering Steve, as she is dying of cancer and wants to die knowing Jen will be safe.

An FBI agent investigating Steve's death, Glenn Morani, is murdered in the second last episode. It is left unclear as to who his killer was, Jen, the Greek mafia, Judy's mother and officer Perez being the prime suspects. It is believed by the town that it was the greek mafia and so it is concluded that they are probably behind Steve's death as well.
