“ | No! She's a weapon, my weapon! And it's taken me years to get her back! | „ |
~ Erickson about Samantha Wilkes. |
“ | The man who tore you from your mother's womb and you want to save him? Adorable. | „ |
~ Erickson to Samantha Wilkes about saving Dr. Brandyworth. |
Steven Erickson is the main antagonist of the Invincible: Atom Eve prequel comics and its animated adaptation, as well as a major antagonist in the Brit comics.
He is a high-ranking official of the Global Defense Agency who performed questionable experiments on multiple children, being directly responsible for all of Samantha Wilkes' childhood trauma, making him her archenemy.
He was voiced by the late Lance Reddick, who also played Papa Legba in American Horror Story, Sylens in Horizon Zero Dawn, Martin Hatch in Quantum Break, Agent Clappers in Paradise PD, Thordak in The Legend of Vox Machina, Ra's al Ghul in Beware the Batman, and General Lunaris in Ducktales.
Appearance[]
Erickson is a tall, muscular, dark-skinned man with gruff facial features, such as his angular eyebrows. While bald in the comics, he has cropped black hair in the TV series. He has brown eyes in the comics. He is generally seen wearing a formal black suit with a red tie.
Personality[]
“ | I don't want impressive. I want the ability to change reality. I want death on command. I want powerful beyond measure. And I almost had it. | „ |
~ Erickson about his experiments. |
Erickson is an authoritative and ruthless man who will take any measure to ensure his experiments go well, no matter what moral boundaries he breaks. He is not above using children for experiments and threatening his employees, demanding absolute perfection from his experiments. He is highly determined to retrieve Samantha Wilkes and use her as a government weapon.
In the show he has a cold, apathetic attitude, while in the comics he is much more openly sadistic.
Biography[]
Nothing is known about Erickson's early life but as part of the Global Defense Agency under Cecil Steadman, he ordered the construction of Phase One; however, Elias Brandyworth and Polly, the donor, planned an operation to keep the unborn child (later named Samantha Wilkes) from being utilized improperly or nurtured in an unhealthy environment.
Erickson pushed Brandyworth to turn his car around after he informed Erickson one evening that the facility had been compromised and was being taken to a hospital. Elias eventually gave away his whereabouts, and Steven, accompanied by a horde of troops and a second scientist named Rodgers, did the same. Erickson ordered a thorough search to locate the child, but they were unsuccessful; they did, however, locate Polly and return her to the institution, where she was declared brain dead and her DNA was used to generate new beings in Phases Two-Five. They spent most of this trying to recreate Phase One without success, and Brandyworth was absent.
After almost ten years, Erickson eventually spots Phase One and the following day he calls in the clones to locate and recover Atom Eve. Rather than being killed, the clones fulfilled their intended purpose by helping Erickson locate Atom Eve and Brandyworth, return them to the facility, and reunite them with Polly. Shocked by this heinous deed, Elias lunged at Erickson, who unintentionally shot Elias as well as Polly. Atom Eve became so outraged by this that she broke the limits that Elias gave her when she was still unborn, and bleached all memories/plans of Erickson and Rodgers using her for such despicable experiments. When he woke up, Erickson was confused of where he was.
In Brit, it's shown he works for Cecil Stedman, although Cecil does not appreciate his methods very much and considers him a loose canon worth removing. His aim is to dissect Brit, a superhero with complete invulnerability, so he can recreate him, doing the same to a villain Brit defeated called Master Mind. After discovering it is possible to damage Brit, he gives the go-ahead to capture him, only Brit proves to be too powerful leading to Erickson's death, something Cecil appears quite happy with.
Quotes[]
“ | Rodgers: We're making progress. Erickson: You're making failures. And if I don't see something different soon, you go in the tube next. |
„ |
“ | You are back, Dr. Brandyworth. And you will make me more weapons like her. | „ |
“ | Erickson: Good old Mom. Brandyworth: Oh, God! Erickson: She's alive. Technically alive. We didn't get her back up and running in time to save her from massive brain damage. But, well, we both know she only had one use anyway. |
