~ Stewie Griffin

Stewart Gilligan "Stewie" Griffin (born June 18, 1997) is one of the deuteragonists of the animated sitcom Family Guy.

He was originally the show's main antagonist before abandoning his original goals of ending his own mother who was his original archenemy and taking over the world by replacing those said goals with protecting the world from bigger threats in later seasons. He is the infant son of both Lois and Peter Griffin, the younger brother of Meg and Chris Griffin, the best friend of Brian Griffin, including being the older half-brother and arch-nemesis of Bertram. Stewie is the only character to appear in every single episode of Family Guy.

He is voiced by series creator Seth MacFarlane, who also voices Peter Griffin, Brian Griffin, Carter Pewterschmidt, and Glenn Quagmire in the same show, and Roger Smith in American Dad!.

Appearance[]

Stewie is a short, tubby, baby with an abnormally shaped head. His head sort of looks like a football. He has 9 strands of black hair that are combed over his head from front to back. His eyes are big and round and far apart. He wears a yellow shirt and red overalls and light blue shoes.

Personality[]

The entire Griffin family has gone through quite a few changes as the series has progressed, going from immature jerks to emotionally unbalanced lunatics. Stewie, however, has gone through the most changes.

He ended up progressing backwards and has became less evil. The most evil plan he successfully pulled off was to trap a group of toddlers in a secret pit because they had displeased him. He called it "The Club of Forgotten Children" and they all presumably starved to death. Stewie would normally unflinchingly commit acts like murder, theft, hijacking, bombing and extortion among many, many others and embraced this depraved personality disorder of his. He never managed to kill a member of his family even though he tried to do so in almost every episode in the earlier seasons, most notably his mother Lois. Furthermore, he did help them whenever it suited him, such as in the first episode.

Since the fourth season, Stewie has become more well-rounded and quirky as a character. He has become far less evil and more or less like the rest of the family had been in the first few seasons. Even so, Stewie has retained some of his malicious traits, but he directs them to other members of the world instead of his family, who he has visibly grown to care for. Stewie was originally a very unsocial kid who could not even have normal conversations with his family. He instead spent his time building a huge array of weapons and gadgets which seemed capable of almost anything. His British accent and loathing for just about everything with a heartbeat were very noticeable in earlier seasons. Stewie also had an absurdly wide vocabulary in earlier seasons and used huge words for situations that did not require them.

In the present seasons, Stewie is far more laid back and flamboyant, even enjoying his family's company. One running gag with Stewie that has become popular is his sexual orientation. He has had crushes on several girls (i.e. Janet, Penelope), but he has also been very public with his struggling homosexuality. He also seems to not completely understand sex. At first, he did not even like the topic; he recently appears to understand it more, but he is still ignorant to some its more specific details. However, he still has moments that show he hasn't reformed as he still sometimes acts mean to those he dislikes.

What's more, Stewie has demonstrated insecurity and narcissism in ways that makes many of his criticisms and meddling towards Brian hypocritical. While a fair amount of Stewie's condescending to and ball-busting of Brian can be considered justified, it is actually a a form of attacking himself while using Brian as a substitute, because deep down, Stewie recognizes his own flaws in Brian, but be refuses to admit to them. When he had a session with the child psychologist, Dr. Cecil Pritchfield, Stewie's barriers were broken down, revealing he is really an insecure little boy who wears his airs of superiority and sophistication like a security blanket because he is afraid of being like everyone else, unremarkable and average, leading him to let Dr. Pritchfield die of a heart attack so no one else would know the truth. Part of the reason Stewie attacks his family in the ways he does is to knock them down from feeling good or proud about themselves, whether or not it's deserved, because Stewie can't stand for anyone else in his family or their friends to feel good and proud of themselves or their accomplishments compared to Stewie's own, whether or not his own pride and achievements are justified, which they usually aren't. His insecurity has been shown multiple times in recent years, such as burning down his trophy case when he found out they were all just participation awards (which accidentally burned the house). He also angrily disowned his beloved teddy bear Rupert when he found out Rupert used to belong to Chris and he later deciding he had to kill Chris and Rupert in order for himself to move on, until he found out Chris had intended to give Rupert back to Stewie, which Stewie accepted. However, he "encouraged" Chris they forget the attempt he made on his brother's life like it never happened. And he once admitted to Brian that he (Stewie) has a pathological need to be liked.

He also once tried to befriend fellow troublemaker Bart Simpson in the Simpsons Guy crossover. However, as both of them have completely different bad boy personalities due to the difference in comedic style between both series (Bart pulls pranks and vandalism, though he has a few redeeming qualities and is not all bad, in contrast to Stewie who is more of a sociopath as he has a violent and disturbing personality), Bart became creeped out by Stewie especially after learning that Stewie kidnapped all of his enemies (Nelson Muntz, Jimbo Jones, Principal Skinner, Sideshow Bob and Apu, just to say the pun "I took a-poo.") and chose not to befriend him, devastating Stewie.

Goals and Ambitions[]

Stewie Kills Lois and Lois Kills Stewie

Stewie Kills Lois and Lois Kills Stewie DVD Cover.

Stewie originally had two goals in life: to murder his mother Lois, and to take over the world. However as the show progressed, Stewie gave up on these plans, and became more of an anti-hero, prone to mocking others for his own amusement, but he wasn’t as bad as the earlier seasons, especially the first three seasons. If anything, he became a mere jerk rather who sometimes reverts back to his old self. In other episodes, Stewie engages in other violent or criminal acts, including robbery, carjacking, loan sharking, forgery, and killing off many minor characters. Stewie has been on getting rid of his mom since the beginning of the show, and has commented several times on the subject to other people, such as when he is being interviewed when the family become part of a reality show; "It's not really that I want to kill her... it's just that I want her not to be alive... anymore." His matricidal tendencies are primarily as a result of her constantly (and unknowingly) getting in the way of his evil plans, so he desires to kill her so he can carry out his plans without interference. His attempts are always fruitless in the end, usually resulting from various unfortunate circumstances getting in the way, such as her opening a cupboard door as he attempts to blow a poison dart at her, or simply moving out of the way when he is about to shoot her with a crossbow. He even once succeeded in a murder attempt that would've killed her, but because Death wasn't on duty due to a foot injury, she survived unscathed. In the more recent seasons, Stewie has a larger amount of freedom from his parents, usually spending much of his time with Brian. This extends to the point of him being able to keep pigs from parallel universes ("Road to the Multiverse") or take part in the television series Jolly Farm ("Go Stewie Go"), as compared to the first season, in which his plans were constantly hindered by Lois. In "The Hand That Rocks the Wheelchair", Stewie inadvertently cloned an evil twin of himself after trying to increase his evil nature. By the end of the episode, it is suggested that the original Stewie may have been unknowingly killed by Brian (as he cannot tell them apart) and Stewie turned to the camera with glowing yellow eyes (reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Thriller"). But so far, the Stewie recently seen in "Trading Places", the follow-up episode, he still seemed to have his mostly harmless eccentricity, shown when he asks Brian if he wanted to trade places with him for fun. Stewie has had a few rare interactions with his apparent pedophile neighbor Herbert. It should be known that Stewie intensely dislikes him and even calls him a pervert. All this does, however, is move Herbert into thinking Stewie as "feisty".

When Stewie traveled to the 1960s and fell in love in "Valentine's Day in Quahog", he learned that the infant he kissed was really his mother when Carter arrived to pick her up.

In the double episode "Stewie Kills Lois"/"Lois Kills Stewie", Stewie appeared to have finally killed Lois, but she returned to Quahog a year later just as Peter was to be held responsible, much to Stewie's dismay. At the Griffins' home, Stewie took his family hostage and, after killing Cleveland Brown, tied them up and forced Brian at gunpoint to drive him to CIA HQ. As Stewie gained world domination, a humiliated Lois showed up at Stewie's compound to put him down. And after a bloody fight, Stewie is killed, not by Lois, but Peter. However, the events were reverted in a deus ex machina ending, where most of the story turned out to be a computer simulation. Because of the rather disastrous ending for himself in the simulation, he decided to put his plans of matricide and world domination aside for the time being.

Quotes[]

You know, my hooligan friend, I've been racking my brain in a thus far fruitless attempt to resolve our recent unpleasantness. Then it dawned on me. Your cruelty merely stems from some deep-seated inner pain. So, the obvious remedy is a healthy dose of OUTER PAIN!

Villainous Acts[]

  • He wants to murder his mom, almost killing her many times throughout the show.
  • There are several instances where he attempted and even succeeded in mind control.
  • He attempted to rid the world of broccoli through weather manipulation, getting rid of other food products and destroying agriculture in the process.
  • He kidnaped a bully to get revenge for stealing his bike.
  • He assaulted a stranger for not buying his lemonade.
  • When a security guard in the airport gave Stewie advice to not run away from his problems, but face them, Stewie "thanked" him by freezing him in carbonite.
  • He used Chris as an android in order to obtain weapons.
  • He stole Meg's diary (just like the rest of the family).
  • He locked his babysitter's boyfriend Jeremy in the trunk of Brian's Prius out of jealousy for at least two weeks, presumably killing him. He then set her up to get fired for not letting him touch her cleavage. It was only after he regretted getting her fired that he realized that Jeremy was still in the trunk, with him realizing he’s dead by now.
  • He burned the house where Olivia Fuller and Victor were in for cheating.
  • He tried to cheat at a skiing contest against a kid’s father to win Rupert back. When he lost, he had his butler pour hot tea on the kid to get away with Rupert and Brian, who was supposed to stay with the boy and father's family if Stewie lost. And to get back home, he carjacked someone at gunpoint.
  • He convinced Brian to take it slow with Carolyn every time he tried to have sex with her. When this lead to Brian losing Carolyn to Cleveland, Stewie hypocritically told Brian that he should've banged her when he had the chance and even denied having told Brian to wait when he angrily called him out. This could suggest that Stewie set Brian up to lose Carolyn.
  • He tried to kill a kid named Brad for beating him at a swimming race.
  • He killed his future self with a ray gun, even after being saved by him, all because his future self never got an answer to a question about Ellen Cleghorne from the future.
  • He impersonated an air traffic controller and tricked a pilot into crashing his plane into the ocean, killing several people.
  • He signed himself and Brian up for the army without the latter's consent before killing Vern and Johnny during one of their performances. Then while in Iraq, when they were trying to get back home, he tried to back out of his own plan of having himself and Brian shooting each other's foot when Brian's bullet missed.
  • It is implied that he killed seven babies without remorse through keeping them imprisoned in a booby trap.
  • In a popular moment, he aggressively beat Brian for neglecting to pay the former the money he owed him. His attempts at getting Brian to pay up ended up becoming outright torture to the point of him shooting Brian in both of his knees before lighting him on fire.
  • Just to teach Brian a point, he burned down a liquor store and killed a stranger's dog.
  • After getting ignored by a mall Santa when it was his turn in line, he attempted to murder the real Santa Claus, but he spared him due to him being unwell and actually wanting Stewie to kill him. Meanwhile, he attempted to have a robot decoy of Brian convince Lois to get the real Brian neutered.
  • He destroyed various parts of the world with Penelope, including Copenhagen with a tidal wave and the theme being roaring 20s which killed millions of people.
  • He threatened and tricked Brian into eating his poop, just for his amusement.
  • He chained up Quagmire and Cleveland in the basement and forced them to watch the 24-Hour DirecTV help channel to the point that they were able to recite everything being said on the TV. He also ate food on the job while working at McBurgertown, which got him fired. When he got back home, he used Meg's hats as diapers and referred to her as "Dog" when the family came back home.
  • He violently killed New Brian and chopped him into pieces for humping Rupert, with him even writing a fake note to cover the murder as suicide.
  • When he and Brian travelled to France to save Meg from slavery, he killed a prince that wanted to instead marry Meg and give her a happy life before wiping Meg's memory of it ever happening to cover what he did.
  • During Brian's date with a blind woman named Katie, Stewie cut Brian's wagging tail off with a scalpel when Brian specifically wanted him to hold it still. He then tried to cauterize the wound, putting Brian in more pain. He then tried to inject him with morphine and told him to pretend he was at the vet, causing Brian to bark in anger and expose himself as a dog, leading to Katie breaking up with him for lying to her.
  • After other children recognized Lois as Saggy Naggy, Stewie joined them in physically assaulting Lois by knocking her out with a golf club and then kicked her repeatedly in the head.
  • He spanked Chris for talking back when he was in trouble without even hearing him out.
  • He went through a "mine" phase and broke Lois' pearl necklace. After Lois slapped him, Stewie developed a love of getting hit and attempted to provoke her anger to get her to hit him again.
  • He set up Connie DiMico into getting arrested for pedophilia when she ended his popularity.
  • He shot Brian's past self in the leg to make past Stewie and Brian return to their present.
  • When a kid knocked over his sandcastle, Stewie tried to shoot him with a freshly assembled gun at point blank, only for it to implode on him. He then attempted to rejuvenate his evil nature with a new invention, only for it to create Evil Stewie.
  • He opened the cargo bay doors of the space shuttle on Meg to give her a scare. When that got her sucked into space, he realized what he just did in shock, but he and Brian did nothing to save her. Meg survived however, but how she did wasn’t addressed.
  • He allowed the child psychologist of his preschool to die from a heart problem since he had revealed his true self to him. Interestingly, this was one of the few times Stewie showed remorse, as he struggled to sleep that night. However, while admitting to Brian that he did something terrible, he refused to discuss it.
  • It is implied that he left an overdosed Mother Teresa alone in front of an emergency hospital without help out of his car.
  • He abducted Peter, Joe, Quagmire, and Brian and hooked them up to a simulation to try and prove that Peter and Brian's friendship was just a coincidence. However, he admitted defeat and confessed what he did upon getting proven wrong, only for it to be revealed that he also did the same thing to Lois, Meg, and Bonnie.
  • He got into a fight with Chris over a massage chair at an electric appliance store that Brian took them to while he was returning a keyboard, causing havoc and damage worth $3,000. Both he and Chris then refused to pay for the damages, leaving Brian to do it by himself in spite of the fact that Brian wasn't responsible for their petty squabble.
  • He used his time machine to mess with various points in Brian’s past and embarrass him once he realized that he could. Brian ended up growing suspicious and eventually decided to catch Stewie in the act when he was about to go back and ruin one of Brian’s most successful dates.
  • When he and Chris were debating on the gender of a squirrel they were nursing back to health, before Brian mauled it to death, Stewie revealed that he confirmed the squirrel's gender by checking with his finger and "really getting it in there", causing Chris to call him out for inadvertently molesting the squirrel.
  • After Peter and Chris destroyed the family TV when he was watching one of his favorite shows, he pretended to want Meg to comfort him during his tantrum so he could break her nose with a headbutt. And when he was the only one who got in trouble, he rebuilt his time machine with the sole purpose of undoing his own birth to spite his family.
  • After briefly tormenting Brian with a dog whistle, he shrunk Brian as payback for taking it away from him and making fun of his height.
  • He beat Brian up and held a gun to his head for killing Rupert in a drunken state, before ending their friendship entirely. He then escalated his hatred towards Brian to a physical fight and then tried to kill him once he learned that the latter killed Rupert on purpose.
  • He lured Brian and Chris into his man-cave and tried to kill them with a crossbow for lying about liking his man-cave constantly and making very insulting comments towards it and himself behind his back, but loud enough for him to hear them. However, they actually deserved it. And when they mocked Stewie and his crossbow behind his back after he spared their lives, Stewie drew the line and shot them dead anyway. However, he then took his own life upon seeing Meg’s exposed breasts.
  • He forced Brian to kill the latter's future self for pranking him.
  • He tried to kill Chris and Rupert by drowning them, all because he was angry that Rupert was a hand me down from Chris. He did however tried to talk himself out of killing Chris until the latter woke up and tried to choke him to death. And although Stewie saved Chris from drowning upon learning that Chris told Rupert that he belonged with Stewie, when Stewie asked Chris if he remembered what happened, he claimed Chris to have answered correctly when he fearfully replied "no", meaning that Chris was afraid of what Stewie would do to him if he told anyone what happened.
  • He shot Brian over the latter eating the former's breakfast cookies.
  • He used Brian’s DNA to make himself pregnant without Brian’s consent.
  • He convinced Brian that they should commit suicide to avoid getting hunted by their loan shark, only to chicken out at the last second as Brian fell to his death. When he confronted the Brian that got teleported to Las Vegas, Stewie lied about how his Brian died and said that he tried to talk him out of committing suicide instead of encouraging him to.
  • When both he and Brian were mistaken for spies and sent to prison in China, the two resorted to incriminating Chris and having him extradited in order to be free men.
  • When Brian went full sober and became the manager of a White Lotus resort in Bermuda, Stewie got him fed up with his constant petty complaints, with one of them involving him wanting Brian to fire a bellhop over getting yelled at for misbehaving. This resulted in Brian relapsing as he chugged a bottle of stolen rum and scooted his ass across Stewie’s room as revenge, with him ultimately losing his job for doing so. Stewie however got pinkeye as karma for getting Brian fired.
  • In "The Simpsons Guy", a crossover episode with The Simpsons, he kidnaped Nelson Muntz and tortured him, including having Nelson literally eat Stewie's pants. Later, he did the same thing to Bart's other foes, like Sideshow Bob, Seymour Skinner, Jimbo Jones, and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, but Stewie kidnapping Apu was solely so he could make a toilet humor joke. He only regretted what he did when it resulted in Bart not wanting to be friends with him anymore.
  • In the deleted scene of "Hannah Banana", while trying to make Brian buy tickets to Hannah Montana, Stewie kidnaped Brian's siblings and tortured them in various execution rooms, even going so far as to kill one of them right in front of Brian to explain his intentions.

Trivia[]

  • He is quite similar to Manny Heffley as both of them are the youngest of three siblings, very young age, get away with a lot of things that they should never, and are rather smart and manipulative.

  • In the episode "Peter's Lost Youth", it's revealed that Stewie is a Taurus, which means that his birthday falls between April 20 and May 20.
  • While many characters, especially Peter and Brian, were flanderized into becoming darker characters as the series progressed, Stewie changed in a more positive manner.
