Villain Overview

Let's get this storm started! Ooh! Hey! That's good. I should trademark that.
~ The Storm King's most famous quote.
Remember, Tempest, only I have the power to make you whole. Make this twig work, and you'll get your reward. Fail me, and your horn won't be the only thing that's broken.
~ The Storm King threatening Tempest.

The Storm King, or simply known as Storm only in the French version, is the main antagonist of the 2017 animated film My Little Pony: The Movie. He is the former master of both Tempest Shadow and Grubber.

He is a tyrannical conqueror who commanded a formidable army in his quest for power from lands beyond Equestria. His army, led by Tempest, invaded and conquered Canterlot so he could steal the magic of the Alicorn Princesses with the Staff of Sacanas so he could become all-powerful and take over the world. After he accomplished this task, he discarded all his servants, including Tempest, believing that he could rule the world with no-one at his side, but this decision ultimately led to his downfall and petrification.

He was voiced by Liev Schreiber, who also played Stu Wargle in Phantoms, Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ted Winter in Salt, Ray Donovan in the series of the same name and Kingpin in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Biography[]

Past[]

In the lands south of Equestria, the Storm King ruled over his realm with an iron fist with an army of Storm Creatures at his command and a cloud-creature known as Strife as his assistant. Over the years, the Storm King would travel to other lands, conquering some and destroying others as he pleased in a quest for power and control over the world, two values he saw fit over all else.

During one of his invasions in the Abyssinian capital of Panthera, the Storm King robbed the riches from the land's rulers, including the Misfortune Malachite, an object said to be cursed with bad luck. Departing the broken kingdom, the Storm King plotted to use the malachite's power to help him take over the world but he was betrayed by Strife, who teamed up with the Storm King's rivals, Captain Celaeno and her crew. Strife sabotaged the ship, stole the malachite and the other ships, and left. Enraged, the Storm King appointee a menial worker known as Grubber to be his 2nd-in-command and fix the ship.

The King eventually hunted down Strife and captured him. After throwing him overboard and killing him, he enslaved Captain Celaeno and her crew to become cargo-holders for him. He soon followed one of his loose airships, steered by Capper and Chummer from Abyssinia to retrieve the Misfortune Malachite.

The Storm King's search for the malachite became harder when a unicorn with a broken horn stole the malachite, sending the Storm Guards on a chase for her. The Storm King himself caught the unicorn in the act, though he was impressed by her avoidance of his forces. The unicorn reveals her name as "Tempest" and tells him about his broken horn. The King agreed to help fix Tempest's horn should she pay him with the malachite. However, the Storm King crushed the malachite, not needing any bad luck. Tempest struck up a deal of her own with him where she would help the Storm King take over Equestria and he would be granted enough power to rule the world and restore her horn. The Storm King agreed to this, making Tempest the commander of his army, but secretly planning on betraying her when he has the chance.

My Little Pony: The Movie[]

The Storm King first appears when he contacts Tempest via magic potion after she has successfully conquered Canterlot and captured Princesses Celestia, Luna, and Cadance by petrifying them with obsidian orbs while Princess Twilight is able to escape with her friends. After some trouble with the image chat, Storm King expresses his frustration at how useless the Staff of Sarcanas is, but Tempest assures her master that he will become all-powerful once he uses the staff to take the princesses' magic. He then asks about Tempest's progress in her mission, and the unicorn asks for three days to have everything ready by his arrival. The Storm King threatens Tempest that he is the only one who can restore her horn if she accomplishes her mission and that there will be dire consequences should she fail him. Tempest promises that she will not fail, and the Storm King begins expressing his excitement at becoming all-powerful right before the communication spell wears out.

Even though not a physical appearance, a bobblehead of the King is held by Murdock when Tempest interrogates the pirates on the Mane Six's whereabouts.

The Storm King finally arrives at Canterlot and enters the throne room just as Tempest arrives as well with an encaged Princess Twilight, who she managed to capture after her friends abandoned her after her selfish actions botched their chance of getting help from the Hippogriffs as well as hurting their feelings afterward. After expressing his contempt for the "cuteness" of the environment he was in, the Storm King uses the Staff of Sacanas to absorb the magic of all four princesses, much to his glee. Afterward, he begins experimenting with his new powers by taking a shot at a de-powered Twilight, which she manages to survive thanks to the toughness of her cage, which was destroyed. As he starts playing with the sun and moon Tempest attempts to remind his master of his promise to repair her horn, only to be set aside so he can continue toying with the cosmos.

Then Twilight's friends all came back to save her, accompanied by the con-cat Capper, the Parrot Pirates, and Princess Skystar. After seeing them managing to fend off his troops, the Storm King uses his staff to create a massive hurricane, blowing away the rest of his army and shielding the castle to keep the heroes from getting closer. As the Storm King marvels at his own power, Tempest tries one last time to persuade him to fulfill their bargain. However, the Storm King scoffs and betrays her, revealing that he had only been using her from the start and that she has outlived her usefulness. He attempts to kill Tempest with lightning bolts but is blown back when she blasts him back with her magic. Twilight sees an opportunity to get the staff away from the Storm King but chooses to save Tempest instead. The Storm King laughs at this gesture and then prepares to murder them both as they are no longer of use to him anymore.

Just as he is about to kill Tempest and Twilight, Twilight's friends launch themselves out of a massive cannon, ramming the Storm King out of the way and lodging the Staff of Sacanas into the mosaic above the throne room. Twilight and her friends make up as they apologize for what they never should've done to each other at a terrible time. As Twilight and her friends work together again, they fight against the raging winds of the hurricane and the falling debris of the collapsing throne room in an attempt to retrieve the staff. Right behind them, The Storm King emerges from underneath some of the fallen rubble and desperately climbs in pursuit of the staff. Fighting against the Mane 6 in the race for the staff, he hurls himself at the staff in a fit of desperate rage, just as Twilight grabs it first just in time, but the strong winds pull Twilight, the staff, and himself through the window and out into the hurricane.

Just when the ponies think Twilight is dead and mourn for her, she emerges from the eye of the storm with the staff, still alive, and uses it to end the chaos the Storm King began. As she and her friends embrace each other, it is revealed that the Storm King survived the storm too. Not wanting to admit his loss and defeat, he quietly climbs back up over the balcony and hurls an obsidian orb at them in the last attempt to retrieve the staff and defeat Twilight and her friends once and for all. Tempest, however, spots him and sees what he was about to do. Having had a change of heart after being saved by Twilight, she leaps in front of the princess and her friends and onto the Storm King, taking the hit and transforming them both into obsidian statues. While Twilight uses the staff to save Tempest, the Storm King's petrified body plummets down to the courtyard below and shatters into pieces upon impact, and ending his oppressive tyranny over Equestria, all the lands he took over the years, and his plan to rule the world before it could truly begin.

It is unknown whether he will have any fate following the film's. However, during the credits, it is shown that a storm creature attempts to piece him back together during a dance competition, only for him to fall into rubble again. During which, his eyes were glowing with rage, indicating that he is possibly still alive (if not, he still has possibility of the spell being reversed from his non-living form in stone). If he was, he has yet to return to threaten Equestria again.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic[]

In the premiere episode "School Daze Part 1", he is mentioned when Twilight says that Tempest left Ponyville to spread the word of the Storm King's defeat. He is also mentioned by Sandbar when he reminds the creature students that the Mane Six saved Equestria.

In the episode "Surf and/or Turf", the Storm King is mentioned several times to recount the events of the film and when he attacked the Hippogriff Kingdom during his reign.

In the episode "The Hearth's Warming Club", the Storm King makes a cameo in Silverstream's story about how she and the other hippogriffs celebrate the "Three Days of Freedom.”

In the episode "What Lies Beneath", the Storm King appears as an illusion formed from Silverstream's deepest fears.

In the episode "Father Knows Beast", the Storm King is mentioned.

My Little Pony - Equestria Girls: Spring Breakdown[]

In the special, taking place between the movie and Season 8 of the series, the Storm King is mentioned multiple times, and his leftover magic is the source of the havoc that happens in the human world.

Comics[]

The Storm King appears as the main antagonist in IDW's My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel which depicts what he did during his reign, conquering many lands, including the Abyssinian capital of Panthera. His second-in-command at the time is Strife, a cloud creature who secretly planned to betray him and side with the Pirates.

In Issue #1, he and Strife invades Panthera, plundering all the palace treasure and setting fire to the rest of the city. However, Strife later betrays the Storm King and allies with Captain Celaeno and her crew of parrot pirates. The Storm King, enraged by this betrayal, appoints Grubber as his new second-in-command.

In Issue #2, the Storm King catches up with Celaeno's ship, tosses Strife overboard for his betrayal, and forces Celaeno and her crew to work for him as cargo haulers. He does not appear in Issue #3, but he is mentioned.

In Issue #4, the Storm King tracks down Tempest Shadow, who has had the Misfortune Malachite while fleeing from his Storm Creatures. The two then allies, with Tempest agreeing to become the Storm King's new lieutenant in his search for magical power in exchange for the Storm King healing her broken horn.

The Storm King is also mentioned during the Convocation of Creatures on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #61 page 15. The Storm King has also been seen in a flashback in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #68.

Appearance[]

Storm King

It is never stated exactly what type of creature the Storm King is, although he is often described as "satyr-like" or a "terrifying beast". He is depicted as an extremely tall, bipedal, fierce-looking creature with a muscular physique, thick white fur that covers all of his body save for his hoofed feet, his three-fingered hands, and his ape-like face, which are gray. His eyes and tongue are blue, and he is clad in lustrous black armor that covers his torso, shoulders, wrists, and shins. He also has large, curving black horns, a large, stuck-out chin, sharp fangs, and a long, white tail with bushy hair at the end.

Personality[]

The Storm King's Evil Smile

The Storm King's evil grin.

The Storm King was described as an unkind, sadistic, cold-hearted, tyrannical, heartless, arrogant, psychotic, vile and cruel monster, with a lust for power. His demeanor unpredictably shifted from pleasant and cheerful, to sardonic and petulant, to cold and ruthless. He loved creating storms, attacking and raiding ships and cities, enslaving, abusing, and corrupting anyone he came across, including his own army. He hated love, caring, kindness, helping, and overall anything cute.

He was also very sarcastic, egotistical, petulant, rude, and quite immature while he also has a dark sense of humor. In the climax of the film, he was also shown to be traitorous and dishonest, as he reveals his deception to Tempest Shadow that he never intended to fix her horn as it turned out that he lied to her. He was also shown to be vengeful and determined as he ragefully tried to get the Staff of Sacanas back before Twilight does and tried to turn Twilight and his friends into stone with an obsidian sphere. This betrayal led to his well-deserved defeat as Tempest finally got revenge on him for betraying her and refused to fix her horn by sacrificing herself to turn both of them into stones before he fell to his death and shattered into pieces while the Mane Six rescued and turned her back to normal.

In the comics, the Storm King confessed to having no interest in "ruling" anyone; he just liked to terrorize, pillage, and destroy any civilization he came across, as well as collect magical items to empower himself. He also has an eye for talent, as he attempted to recruit Captain Celaeno until she refused to leave her crew, and recruited Tempest after seeing her cunning and willingness to manipulate others. His most defining trait was his absolute hatred for the very concept of friendship, as he believed friends would ever only hold him back from true power.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Superhuman Strength: The Storm King possesses immense amounts of physical strength as he is able to punch straight through a stone wall with ease in the comics.
    • Superhuman Leaps: The Storm King's strength extends to his legs, allowing him to leap great distances with a single bound.
  • Superhuman Durability: The Storm King is quite resilient to damage, being tough enough to shrug off being crushed by falling debris and plunging into a hurricane. He could also endure a blow from Pinkie Pie being fired from a cannon and a magical blow from Tempest.
  • Leadership: The Storm King has a large army of powerful Storm Creatures and an armada of sky ships at his command. He has managed to conquer several lands beyond Equestria, showing great leadership skills.

Weaknesses[]

  • Powerless: Despite his immense strength and durability, the Storm King had no powers of his own and relied on artefacts and devices for many of his attacks. Without them, he was almost helpless.
  • Arrogance: Despite his long going cruel leadership and knowledge of most magic artefacts he used to rule over lands, but like most villains in “My Little Pony” he was ultimately arrogant, making him foolish enough to believe he can succeed on his own with no friends or allies, only relying in his new storm powers to do all the work which ultimately led to his defeat and death at the hooves of the Mane 6, Spike and Tempest.

Arsenal[]

  • Storm King 23

The Storm King with the Staff of Sacanas.

Staff of Sacanas: At some point prior to the movie, the Storm King came into possession of this immensely powerful staff that acted as his primary weapon.
    • Magic Absorption: Similarly to Tirek, the Storm King could use the Staff of Sacanas to suck magic out of other creatures to make it more powerful.
      • Lightning Bolts: After absorbing the three Princesses’ power, the Storm King could shoot powerful lightning from the Staff of Sacanas.
      • Celestial Body Manipulation: After absorbing their powers, the Storm King could raise and lower the Sun and Moon at will like Celestia and Luna did.
      • Storm Generation: The Staff of Sacanas' greatest show of power was when he used all of the absorbed magic to generate an extremely powerful winter storm. It devastated Canterlot and was so powerful that not even the Storm King could resist it for long.
  • Obsidian Orbs: The Storm King utilized dark grey balls that could instantly turn any creature that they touched into stone.
  • Communication Spell: The Storm King used a potion that could generate a screen which worked like a two-way communicator to talk to Tempest Shadow.

Relationships[]

Allies[]

The Storm King doesn't have any friends, he only cared about himself and hardly has any allies, since almost all of them he betrayed or turned against him themselves. Also, he considers his minions his "servants" and not friends. Here are his former allies.

Tempest Shadow[]

Storm King: Who cares about your dinky little unicorn horn?!
Tempest Shadow: But… we had an agreement!
Storm King: Get with the program! I USED you! It's kinda what I do.
~ The Storm King revealing to Tempest that he lied about restoring her horn before attempting to kill her.

Tempest Shadow was the Storm King's second-in-command and they seemed to have a strong relationship at first, as Tempest was his most trusted lieutenant, to the point where he appoints her as the commander of his army. When the Storm King and Tempest Shadow first met, they made a deal, as Tempest agreed to help him steal the magic of the four Alicorn princesses, while the Storm King promised that once he gained the magic from the princesses, he will use it to restore her broken horn.

However, despite Tempest's loyalty, the Storm King never truly cared about Tempest and was only using her to get what he wanted. Once he had attained what he wanted, he coldly informed her that he no longer had any use for her and even attempted to kill her, thus severing any sort of bond they may have had. However, betraying his most trusted ally and attempting to kill her ultimately led to his downfall, as Tempest was saved by Twilight Sparkle and this causes her to regret her actions. When the Storm King attempted to turn the Mane Six into Obsidian Stone, Tempest saves them by jumping in front of her former master, turning the both of them into obsidian stone. While Tempest was luckily saved by Twilight and her friends, the petrified Storm King falls off the balcony and shattered into pieces.

Despite Tempest's former loyalty, the Storm King never truly cared about Tempest as he only cared about himself, therefore they will now remain as enemies from now on. As mentioned in both the show and the comics, Tempest would soon travel Equestria to spread the news of the Storm King's defeat, proving her redemption and defection from the Storm King's dark forces for good.

Grubber[]

Grubber is one of the Storm King's minions. Though their relationship is not fully shown, the Storm King briefly appoints Grubber as his second-in-command in Issue #1 of the My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel comics, after his previous second-in-command, Strife, betrayed him. Due to his dim-witted nature, the Storm King views Grubber as too incompetent to betray him. Later on, though, Grubber is replaced with Tempest Shadow. The Storm King and Grubber only interact once in the film, and that is when the latter and Tempest capture Twilight Sparkle. This would be their final interaction before the Storm King's death at the hooves of Tempest. Grubber's loyalty to the Storm King would later end after his reign of terror did, as he accepts Tempest's hand in friendship in The Great Princess Caper and parties with the ponies and other redeemed Storm Guards in the movie's end-credits.

Storm Creatures[]

These yeti-like creatures were loyal minions of the Storm King and they helped him succeed in conquering many lands beyond Equestria. In the IDW comics, the Storm King was shown to appreciate the hard work and dedication of the Storm Creatures that he considered offering them a cake. In truth, however, he only values them for how useful they are to him and does not consider them friends, something which he discloses to Strife. Once he got the Staff of Sacanas, he uses it to create a Tornado, most of his minions were caught and blown away by the storm, revealing how much he didn't care for them whatsoever. In the novelization, The Great Princess Caper, the Storm Guards are said to have run away following the battle for Canterlot, and in the film's credits, are seen lining up to get cake at the Friendship Festival, implying that they have abandoned their master's evil plot to save themselves and may have redeemed.

Strife[]

Strife was the Storm King's original second-in-command in the IDW comics, before his betrayal and secretly working with the Parrot Pirates. Tired of the Storm King's constant abuse and his belief that "friends" can betray you, Strife decided to betray the Storm King and side with the Parrot Pirates. The outraged Storm King chased down the Parrot Pirates and briefly appoints the cowardly Grubber as his second-in-command for a short time. The Storm King managed to catch up to the Pirate ship and tosses Strife overboard for his betrayal, likely to his death. It's possible that Strife is indirectly responsible for Storm King to become much more untrustworthy with his minions and becoming traitorous himself when he betrays Tempest in the movie.

Enemies[]

Twilight Sparkle[]

Twilight Sparkle is Storm King's archenemy along with Tempest, they didn't really talk to each other much to each other during the movie, but he sent his army and his commander Tempest to capture her and the princesses to steal their magic so he can rule the world with his Staff of Sacanas. After constantly evading Tempest, Twilight is brought to the Storm King where he steals her magic along with the other Alicorns and summons a tornado to conquer Equestria.

During this, the king expresses disdain for Twilight's preaching's of friendship as well as disliking Equestria's "cute" nature. The Storm King then prepares to kill Twilight and Tempest once they outlived their usefulness to him, only to lose the staff to the rest of the Mane 6, and eventually lose his power. The Storm King, viewing Twilight as a legitimate threat, prepares to turn her to stone, but is stopped by Tempest and is turned to stone himself and shattered.

Mane Six[]

The Mane Six wouldn't meet the Storm King until their final battle, in which they succeeded in stealing the Staff of Sacanas from him. Angered, the Storm King tries to turn them to stone as revenge, but Twilight's previous rescue of Tempest Shadow inspires her to defend them, leading to his defeat. But in the end he has proven to be one of the Mane Six most dangerous enemies who was very close to finally conquering all of Equestria and very close to having the team finally defeated at once single handedly.

Princesses Celestia, Luna, and Cadance[]

Despite their initial unawareness of the King, the Storm King had disliked the Princesses much like the other rulers of the lands he has conquered and destroyed and seeks to control their magic. Unfortunately, this ends up back-firing after the Storm King is killed, as the magic that he had wrongfully stripped away from them would be returned to the Princesses.

Queen Novo[]

In the chapter prequel book, The Stormy Road to Canterlot, the Storm King mentions how he is not on good terms with Queen Novo and would not hand over the pearl to him, implying that he has harassed her in the past. Later on in the book, Queen Novo recognizes Tempest as a soldier for the Storm King and sends her subjects to flee. In the film, Queen Novo refrains from helping the Mane 6 stop the Storm King in fear of him getting the pearl. Out of all the hippogriffs though, Skystar is the only one who is willing to fight against the Storm King to save both her home, Equestria, and the world.

Captain Celaeno[]

Captain Celaeno and her crew had been nuisances to the Storm King in the past. In Issue #2, they are shown capturing the Storm King's ships and chasing away the Guards. Later on, they receive a message from Strife, the Storm King's second-in-command, who instructs the pirates to attack the Storm King's armada and steal their ships. The attack is mostly successful until the Storm King catches up to them. After killing Strife and threatening Celaeno's crew, the Storm King enslaves Celaeno to become cargo birds. In the film, they threaten to throw the Mane 6 overboard but are stopped for lunch. After explaining their roots to the Mane 6, Rainbow Dash convinces them to become pirates again. This inspires the pirates to help the Mane 6, Capper, and Skystar fight back against the Storm King, saving Equestria.

The Abyssinians[]

The Storm King looked down on the Abyssinians, destroying the city all the way to the nation's capital of Panthera. The King and Queen submit defeat to the Storm King as he pillages their town. He steals many of their riches including an artifact known as the Misfortune Malachite, which is said to have bad luck. Despite the King and Queen's protests, the Storm King refuses to listen to reason and leaves Abyssinia in flames. As shown in the Season 10 comics, Abyssinia had become traumatized following the Storm King's petrification and became a police state.

Silverstream[]

Silverstream and Storm King were never physically seen on-screen together. However, it was shown that Silverstream was deeply afraid of him and was traumatized by the events that happened when the Storm King attempted to conquer Mount Aris before Queen Novo and her subjects turned into seaponies to hide from the evil tyrant. In the episode "What Lies Beneath", Silverstream sees an illusion of the Storm King and his minions, and she thought they were actually there and hides behind a rock. However, Gallus encourages her to stand up to the illusion of the Storm King. Silverstream confronts her deepest fears, telling off the illusion of the Storm King that he is nothing but a big bully with a silly name and a goofy crown. She also angrily tells the shadow that she and her kind will never again be intimidated by him now that he is gone. Thanks to her courage of standing up against her worst fear, the shadows of Storm King and his army disappear, much to the joy of Silverstream and Gallus.

Reception[]

The Storm King received a mixed reception from critics and the Brony fandom. While Tempest Shadow was praised by critics and the fandom, the Storm King was criticized for his lack of screen time, character development, comedic moments, and would even be called one of the weakest villains in the series since King Sombra.

Despite this, some fans did enjoy the character, as well as praise Liev Schreiber's voice acting, and his character's role in the comics. Over time, positive reception towards the character grew.

Andrea Libman, who regularly voices Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy for the series, commented on an Equestria Daily interview that the Storm King was her favorite MLP villain. Among other things, Liev Schreiber, along with director Jayson Thiessen, the writers, and the animators, went on to comment that bringing the character to life was fun. These statements, along with denial of his film appearance being his last, has caused many fans to wonder if the Storm King will return, whether physical or non-physical. Unfortunately, he didn't reappear physically again, but he was shown in flashbacks and visions in Season 8 of Friendship is Magic.

Comics and Books[]

Whoa! Hey! Seems kinda unfair to have somebody else telling my story! If we're going to have a whole issue about me, then I'm gonna tell it! So please, join me on the next page, won't you?
~ The Storm King's introduction in the prequel series as he breaks the fourth wall.
I know I call myself a "king," but frankly, monarchy just isn't my thing. You take over one country, next thing you're dealing with taxes and committees and retirement packages!
~ The Storm King stealing and destroying Capper's home Abyssinia.
Really? Well, then, lucky for you I'm taking it off your hands!
~ The Storm King stealing Malachite when told about its power.
Storm King: Another successful invasion, Strife.
Strife: Yes my lord. A masterpiece of strategy, if I must say.
Storm King: Another country plundered of its riches. They're barely a challenge anymore. And do you know why? Because I have
no friends. Friendship is a weakness. A liability. Friends distract you. Make you weak. Friends can betray you, make you forget your goals. I have soldiers, commanders, workers—but no friends. Which means nobody will ask me to sacrifice my ambitions. My goals are my own. Even you, my right-hand creature! Even you are not a friend. You are an agent of my will. You serve me not out of some misguided sentimentality or imagined camaraderie… but because you know I will win, in the end. I will be the most powerful creature in the world. And you want to be at my side.
Strife: …Yes, my lord. I am your servant.
~ The Storm King telling his second-in-command Strife about friendship being weak.
Now, I'm sure some of you may be asking: Why? Why do I desire conquest about all else? For that matter, who is the Storm King? Was I the child of a thundercloud and the sky? Was I born from an egg on a mountaintop? Am I merely an ordinary creature with dreams of greatness? What does it matter? I am purely what I am—no more and no less. I am not the king of the storm… I am a king who is a storm.
~ The Storm King keep his past a secret while making a second fourth wall break moments before his ship was attacked.
Storm King: You. Small, weak, useless creature.
Grubber: T—That's me!
Storm King: You are too cowardly to ever attempt to betray me, are you not? Too spineless to consider your own wants. Aren't you?
Grubber: Y—Y—Y—You got me pegged, boss.
Storm King: Good. You're my new second-in-command. Get my ship repaired and follow those pirates. We have a traitor to catch.
~ The Storm King promotes his small servant Grubber his second-in-command after Strife betrayed him and orders him to get the ship repaired to catch Strife and the pirates.
That was a short-lived escape, huh?
~ The Storm King successfully captures Celaeno's ship.
I listened to him talk. Look where it got me.
~ The Storm King expresses how he listened to Strife after he was thrown overboard to his presumed death.
Now, you and your crew did steal from me. But you did a darn good job of it. I can respect that kind of skill, captain. I'd like to offer you a job.
~ The Storm King offers Celaeno to be his right-hand creature to no avail.
Congratulations, captain. You helped one ship escape my grasp. If you're so devoted to your crew… I suppose you should be allowed to stay together. Like I said… I always need more cargo haulers.
~ The Storm King makes Celaeno a cargo hauler after she saved Capper and Chummber and her ship.
You've known, you've been leading me on quite a chase! Seriously, I've had to put my best creatures on you!
~ The Storm King meets Tempest Shadow.
Storm King: That trick with your cloak and that other pony, just now? That was darn clever. But why didn't you just ask him to help you?
Tempest: Because… because I learned a long time ago… you can't rely on anypony else.
Storm King: "Anypony." That's cute.
~ The Storm King admires Tempest's cleverness and reflects on the trust they both had.
Storm King: Once I've finished conquering, I'll have more power than any other creature in the world!
Tempest: Is that why you're searching for magic? Just for… power?
Storm King: What other goal is there? Power. Control. These are the only things worth seeking in this world.
~ The Storm King and Tempest Shadow talking about obtaining power.
So you don't believe in bad luck. I do. And if I'm going to be conquering, the last thing I need is bad luck.
~ The Storm King finally convinced Malachite's power is nothing but trouble after destroying the Malachite.
I promise—Commander Tempest.
~ The Storm King makes Tempest his new second-in-command when he tricks her into making her think he'll restore her horn.

Movie[]

Storm King: Where am I supposed to be looking? I never understand how this spell works. Tempest!
Tempest: Over here, your Excellency.
Storm King: Where?
Tempest: Over here.
Storm King: Huh?
Tempest: No. No, right. Look right.
Storm King: My right?
Tempest: Yeah.
Storm King: Oh. There you are.
~ The Storm King's first words in the movie when he calls Tempest Shadow.
Storm King: Here's the deal. I'm in the middle of a big re-brand here. "The Storm King" is tracking, well, as intensely intimidating, but you know what? I need to back it up. You know what I need to back it up with? A STORM! That would be great! You promised me magic that could control the elements, and right now, I'm holding a what? A branch. A twig. Bleh!
Tempest: That would be the Staff of Sacanas, your Excellency, and it will…
Storm King: Mm-hmm?
Tempest: …channel the magic of the four rulers of this land.
Storm King: Mm-hmm?
Tempest: You'll soon have the power of a hundred armies.
Storm King: So that would be a yes on your locking down the four Pegacornicuseses, or whatever you call them?
Tempest: Give me three days. I'll have everything ready for your arrival.)
~ The Storm King and Tempest discussing their plan to drain the magic of the Alicorn princesses.
Storm King: Remember, Tempest. Only I have the power to make you whole. Make this twig work, and you'll get your reward. Fail me, and your horn won't be the only thing that's broken.
Tempest: It won't be a problem.
Storm King: Great! I'm ready to power up, crash and bash, and be the biggest, baddest bugaloooooo…
Grubber: Sorry, bad spell service. You want me to call him back?
~ The Storm King threatening before the spell connection fades out.
Storm King: Ooh, fascinating! What can you really do?
Grubber: Your bidding of course, oh mighty one!
Storm King: Bidding's good. I like bidding.
~ The Storm King upon arriving at Canterlot.
Storm King: Umm… what are you supposed to be?
Twilight: I'm the princess of friendship.
Storm King: Oh, ha! That's nice.
~ The Storm King upon meeting Twilight for the first time.
Storm King: Why is this one still moving?
Tempest: She and her friends put up a bit of a fight, but she's alone now. She won't be a problem.
Storm King: Yeah. So, speaking of problems, this place, it seems a little too… oh, I don't know… CUTE!! I don't like cute! I never did like cute! Doesn't really go with my whole "big bad powerful magic guy" thing, does it?! Deliver the punchline, Tempest, because this has gotta be a joke!
~ The Storm King to Tempest about Twilight.
Check out the light show!
~ The Storm King while stealing the alicorn princesses' magic.
Storm King: Not bad. Actually, kinda first-rate. What else does it do?
Tempest: Your Excellency, you promised to restore my horn and giving—
Storm King: Deh-deh-deh-deh-deh, okay. Hang on. [moves the Sun] You gotta be kiddin' me! I can move the sun?! A haha! Wow! Now, this is what I'm talkin' about! Haha! Time to play! Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday! Day, night! Day, night! Day-night! Day-night! Day-night! Sunrise, sunset!
~ The Storm King while testing out his new power and playing with the Sun and Moon.
Storm King: What? How?
Twilight: It's… it's the magic of…
Storm King: Yeah! Yeah! Friendship and flowers and ponies and bleh! I am so over the cute pony thing! This… ends… NOW!
~ The Storm King mocking friendship before starting his storm.
Now I truly am the Storm King! And the entire world will bow to my ba, ba, ba Boom, baby! (Tempest Shadow: Yes, yes, you are every bit as powerful as I promised sire; now restore my horn, and I swear to use my magic to serve you.) (Laughs) Who cares about your dinky little unicorn horn?! (Tempest Shadow: But.. We had an agreement!) Get with the program! I USED you! It's kinda what I do.
~ The Storm King betrays and taunts Tempest, revaling that he was never gonna help her restore her horn and was only using her to do all the dirty work for him.
Ahhh! Isn't that just so sweet? [laughs] Yeah. See yah!
~ The Storm King mocking Twilight for saving Tempest.
The staff belongs to me!
~ The Storm King trying to retrieve his staff before Twilight does.
No! That's my staff!! MIIIINE!! MINE! Oh, no, NOOO!
~ The Storm King’s breakdown before being sucked into his storm with Twilight
I'm not done yet!
~ The Storm King when he was about to turn Twilight and her friends into obsidian and his last words he said in the novel.
No! Stop! Please, wait! I've… I've—I've changed my mind!
~ The Storm King's last words in the movie before being turned to stone.

Trivia[]

  • Before G4, there was a Storm King character in the G1 comics. The two share very little in common, however, and shouldn't be considered different incarnations of the same character like it did Tirac and Tirek.
  • The Storm King is Schreiber's first animation voice role since Chicago 10. His next two animated movies were released the following year. The second was Isle of Dogs where he voices Spots, one of the main heroes and brother of Chief, the film's protagonist, and the third is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where he voices Kingpin.
  • Liev Schreiber stated in an interview that he accepted the role of the Storm King because he wanted to appear in a film his children could watch, noting their exposure to his violent, adult-oriented films.
  • Twilight mentions the Storm King having been "destroyed" in Spring Breakdown.
  • He is one of the only four major villains outside of Equestria Girls films to not be defeated a thousand years ago or more, the other three being Queen Chrysalis, Starlight Glimmer, and Cozy Glow.
  • In the French version and other languages, his real name is Storm but, in the English/American version, his name is never given.
  • He is the second villain to turn into a statue after Discord.
  • In interviews with Lionsgate, Schreiber commented that he approached his portrayal of the Storm King as an actor would do with a live-action character, exploring and improvising on his role.
  • According to The Art of My Little Pony: The Movie, a prologue was proposed to introduce the Storm King, Tempest Shadow, and the Storm Guards, but was cut; most likely for time. In an early concept scene, the Storm King took over the Arimaspi Kingdom, overthrowing its king as a way of showing his might. In another concept, the Staff of Sacanas originally belonged to Tirek's younger brother, Scorpan, which was later changed to the staff originating from the Tree of Harmony. Additionally, the Storm Kingdom and a throne room for the Storm King would've been revealed.
    • Despite the prologue's deletion, the Storm Kingdom briefly appears in the midquel book The Great Princess Caper.
  • When Tempest restores Canterlot with the staff, the spot where the Storm King fell is shown but his shattered remains are missing. This suggests that the staff's power destroyed his remains or that his soldiers came and collected his remaining pieces before anyone else could. Though this could actually be because the animators of the movie simply forgot to draw them in before fully animating the scene.
  • Unlike King Sombra, the Storm King was not revived by Discord (who was under the disguise as Grogar) for his team. In universe, it is not clear why he did not restore him, as his goofy and sarcastic nature would not have mattered as Discord's plan was for Twilight to defeat the villains. Out of universe, this was likely due to Liev Schreiber being too high budget to reprise his role as the Storm King. Ironically, whilst the Storm King did not appear and was not recasted, King Sombra returned and was recasted for the final season. In addition, most of the characters that debuted in the film such as Tempest Shadow, Capper, Queen Novo, and Princess Skystar all returned in the final season despite none of them having any lines. According to Jim Miller, the choice for the film's characters to return for the final season was made but not all of them would be included in the series. Indicating that the Storm King was not meant to return for the rest of the series. This would make the Storm King one of the few major antagonists to not make a reappearance despite being mentioned a few times, the others are The Pony of Shadows, Grubber, Principal Cinch and Gaia Everfree.
  • Storm King is very similar to fellow My Little Pony villain Tirek, as both are power-hungry humanoid hybrid tyrants who seek to conquer Equestria and manipulate powerful individuals (Tempest Shadow and Discord) to help them with their conquest by falsely promising something greater than friendship, only for them to turn their backs on them instead. Both were also confronted by Mane Six and finally got their own karmas by the ones whom they betrayed. Only differences they had is Storm King was the first to conquer half of Equestria, he’s been more successful taking over lands than most villains before meeting the Mane 6 and was super close to destroying Twilight and her friends with no mercy.
