Straff Venture is a major antagonist in the Mistborn original trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. He serves as a minor antagonist in The Final Empire and the main antagonist of The Well of Ascension. He is the arrogant and tyrannical lord of House Venture, and the father of protagonist Elend Venture.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Straff was born into the powerful Venture family. As lord of the Venture family, he inherited the goal of mining the Pits of Hathsin. He would oversee the slaves sent to the pits and force them to mine the valuable metal known as atium. The slaves would always die a slow and painful death in the pits.

Straff had a trueborn son named Elend. He had Elend beaten to the point of death, in an attempt to awaken Allomancy in Elend. When Elend was 13, Straff forced him to rape a Skaa prostitute, whom he killed afterward.

Straff wanted to breed Allomancer children. To do this, he would sleep with many younger women, whom he would discard as they aged above their twenties. He had many illegitimate children, some of whom were allomancers. One of his children, Zane, was a mistborn. Zane's existence was hidden from the world. Straff would psychologically manipulate Zane in an attempt to keep him hunder control.

The Final Empire[]

Straff showed disdain for his son Elend, especially as Elend started to fall in love with VIn. Straff privately hoped Elend would die, hoping to remove him from the line of succession. After Kelsier destroyed the Pits of Hathsin, Straff fled Luthadel. He encouraged ELend to stay, hoping ELend would die.

The Well of Ascension[]

After The Lord Ruler died, Straff declared himself Lord of the Northern Dominance. He intended to conquer Luthadel. He laid seige to the city while he also had his son spy on Vin and Elend.

He invited Vin and Elend to a meeting, showing off his mistress who looked like Vin, but was even younger. He tried to kill Vin and Elend, but Vin rioted his fear, causing him ot be terrified of her. He let them go, however, he sent Zane to kill Vin.

Zane and one of his mistresses, Amaranta, had been poisoning Straff. Straff found out and killed Amarinta. He managed to find and take the antidote before the poison would have killed him.

After the Koloss army attacked Luthadel, VIn managed to take control of the Koloss which she used to attack Straff's army. She personally entered the fray and killed Straff.
