Strapp is a minor antagonist in the book The Bellmaker, the seventh book in the Redwall novel series. He is a corsair and the captain of the ship Shalloo who is known as dangerous and sly and often fought with his brother Slipp, the captain of the other vessel, the Pearl Queen, and someone he sought to get rid of. Eventually, the Pearl Queen gets taken by Finnbarr, whom the ship was initially stolen from, and a group of friends he made with Strapp trying to get the ship while leaving Slipp floundering in the ocean, though this wouldn't end well for Strapp either.

Biography[]

Not a lot is explored in depth as to Strapp's past as a searat pirate, though given the crimes searats usually engage in (murder, slavery, etc.), it's likely Strapp at least engaged in one of them. He is known for his status as a corsair and for being dangerous and sly with his brother Slipp, who is also a corsair and someone he often quarreled with. He sought to get rid of Slipp, take over his crew, and take his ship, the Pearl Queen, which he and Slipp had stolen from an otter Finnbarr by means of killing his crew, wife, and two sons and is a ship Slipp took over, for himself at some point.

One day, he argued once again with Slipp, this time over whether to sail north or south with Slipp wanted to go with the former and Strapp wanting to go with the latter. Strapp ended up getting both crews to side with him after painting a glowing picture of the southern sun and easy pickings. They would all go aboard the Shalloo to celebrate while Slipp was alone sulking over a small fire on the shore with plans to continue the argument the next day and escalate it into a fight to beat and humiliate Strapp before regaining command. Later that day, Finnbarr, who had befriended a group of creatures from Redwall Abbey who were introduced to him by his friend Log-a-Log and would scheme up a plan to take back the Pearl Queen while it lay around a headland along with Strapp's ship, the Shalloo before boring some holes in the Shalloo's side and scuttling it in the bay.

Finnbarr and the group would proceed to carry out the plan, having gotten rid of the Pearl Queen's crew and sailing away on the ship with Slipp ending up in the water after attempting to make it back to his ship before deciding to strike out for his brother's ship when it began heading out to sea. Strapp, having roistered in the close confines of his cabin, awakened and discovered what had happend after being informed by Rappsnout, a mate of the Pearl Queen with their attempt at boring a hole in his vessel having failed due to them being chased off. He then hears Slipp in the water yelling at Strapp to throw him a line. To mock him, Strapp has Rappsnout throw him the line before telling him to throw the other end of it while shouting orders to the two crews he had aboard. Turning back to Rappsnout when he questions him, he tells him he'll make him captain of the Shalloo if he does so. Rappsnout then does as ordered before Strapp proceeds to sail the ship in a chase against the Pearl Queen with every scrap of canvas piled on his own ship.

While perched high on the prow of Shalloo, he continued shouting orders at the crews to catch up with the Pearl Queen before ordering Rappsnout to get some archers and grappling hooks, intending on clapping grapplers and holding it close while the archers kill off the crew on the Pearl Queen and to get Finnbarr first, which Rappsnout happily carries out. Unbeknownst to them, however, there was a gigantic whirlpool up ahead called the Green Maelstrom, which Finnbarr planned on luring the Shalloo into. Meanwhile, Strapp lay about with the flat of his cutlass at the rats crowding the bows, telling them to get back and wait until he gives the word. Rappsnout then reports that the Pearl Queen is floundering with all sails on the starboard side slack, much to Strapp's delight as he tells the rats to get back up forward and stand by with weapons and grappling hooks, confident that they'll hove alongside the ship in no time.

A shrieking rat in the rigging on lookout then alerts Strapp of the maelstrom up ahead. At first, Strapp didn't believe him, but he then noticed it upon hauling himself high into the forepeak rigging to take a look. The crew would notice it too and request that he brings the ship around before they get sucked in. Despite this, Strapp was determined to have the Pearl Queen and only booted the closest rats down to the deck before railing at them to continue sailing onward, threatening to throw whoever disobeys overboard. Soon, the Shalloo closed up on the Pearl Queen, allowing the searats on the former to catch it with grappling hooks before shooting a volley of arrows per Strapp's orders as he roared them above the thunder of the Green Maelstrom. However, when the Shalloo's bowsprit was a fraction from striking the Pearl Queen amidships, Finnbarr, who had the shrews slack off the larboard sails, cut the grappling lines with Log-a-log's help using their swords after turning their ship sideways, leading to the Shalloo getting sucked into the Green Maelstrom with Strapp and his crews on it, getting them killed and avenging the deaths of Finnbarr's crew, wife, and sons.
