Strikeback (called Réplique in French) is a minor antagonist of the French superhero cartoon series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir. It is a massive knight/golem-like Sentimonster created by Shadow Moth to wreak havoc on Paris and defeat Ladybug and Cat Noir.
In French, it was voiced by Martial Le Minoux, who also played The Supreme.
Appearance[]
Strikeback has a black-armored body with spikes on its torso, arms, and angles. It has a blank chrome-like face. It is incredibly tall, almost taller than the Eiffel Tower.
Personality[]
Strikeback is ruthless and destructive. Like most Sentimonsters, it is single-mindedly focused on accomplishing the tasks it has been assigned to; in its case, destroying all of Paris and defeating Ladybug, Cat Noir and their allies. It doesn't have any regard for what gets in its way as it accomplishes this goal, and is able to use any tool at its disposal to attack its enemies, whether using its newly acquired powers or weaponizing its environment. Despite appearing mindless, it is seemingly quite clever, being able to figure out a way to attack all the heroes at once, and later forcing Cat Noir to use his Cataclysm so it can steal his powers.
Abilities[]
Strikeback is immune to any superpower used against it directly. Once a superpower has been used against it, it can copy and summon the power as many times as it wants. To do so, all it needs is to speak the phrase "Strike Back".
- Venom: Strikeback can turn its hand into a bee stinger and immobilize it's opponents by stinging them.
- Clout: Strikeback can charge up its fist with energy and unleash a very powerful punch.
- Multitude: Strikeback can duplicate into smaller clones of itself.
- Cataclysm: Strikeback can fuse it's hands with dark destructive energy and can destroy anything or anyone with one touch.
It also bears the power of super strength, easily being able to crush things with its body and lift heavy things, such as the Roue de Paris.
Biography[]
In "Risk", after having created the Akumatized villain Risk to force Ladybug, Cat Noir and the rest of Paris to take various risks and act extremely reckless, Shadow Moth decides to move ahead with the second stage of his plan and infects his cane with an Amok, using his determination/ambition to create a powerful Sentimonster. Naming the Sentimonster Strikeback, Shadow Moth unleashes his creation upon Paris, intending to force his enemies to take many unnecessary risks and capitalize on it.
In "Strikeback", Strikeback begins its attack on Paris, drawing the attention of Ladybug and Cat Noir. The heroes attempt to bring Strikeback down, but are continuously distracted by their own in-fighting and having to save reckless civilians influenced by Risk. As a result, Ladybug decides to call upon many of her other Miraculous holder allies for help, allowing them to divide their attention between saving civilians and stopping Strikeback. On Ladybug's orders, Vesperia attempts to immobilize Strikeback, only to find that it is immune to her powers. Purple Tigress and Multimouse also attempt to use their powers to stop Strikeback, although it again remains unaffected. Strikeback then reveals that it can copy the heroes' abilities, splitting itself into three clones using Multimouse's Multitude and assuming Vesperia's Venom and Purple Tigress' Clout to further its rampage.
In order to prevent Strikeback from growing more powerful, Ladybug orders her team not to attack it and regroups with them above city hall. Strikeback attacks them by ripping up the Roue de Paris Ferris wheel and hurling it at city hall, although Ryuko defends the team using her Wind Dragon power—inadvertently, this results in Rena Furitive's existence being exposed to the other heroes and Shadow Moth, as Carapace impulsively shields her from the redirected Ferris wheel. Rena then helps Ladybug and the others realize that Risk is the one making them act impulsive, forcing Ladybug to prioritize stopping him first, knowing that they cannot defeat Strikeback while under his influence. Despite capturing Risk, Ladybug and her allies are unable to find his Akumatized object, allowing Strikeback's rampage to continue.
Still influenced by Risk, Cat Noir decides to engage Strikeback against Ladybug's orders, resulting in it gaining his Cataclysm power, enabling it to unleash mass destruction on Paris. Desperate for a way to stop Risk and Strikeback, Ladybug decides to unify with the Horse and Rabbit Miraculouses, becoming "Pennybug", using their powers to recruit the one person in Paris unaffected by Risk, "Adrien Agreste" (actually his cousin Félix in disguise). Ladybug grants "Adrien" the Dog Miraculous, transforming him into Flairmidable, and goes back in time with him to identify the object that Shadow Moth Akumatized so that Flairmidable can use his Fetch power to track it down. Ladybug and Flairmidable return to the present, finding Paris nearly destroyed by Strikeback and its clones, and the rest of their team completely defeated.
Once Risk is de-Akumatized and his influence removed, Ladybug and Flairmidable regroup with the others, formulating a plan to prevent Strikeback from doing anymore harm. The heroes (sans Flairmidable, who abandons the battle) corner Strikeback and its clones, and, while Carapace uses his Shell-ter to entrap them, Ladybug uses the Horse Miraculous to teleport them into the sun, banishing them from Paris forever. In the aftermath, Shadow Moth rages over Strikeback's defeat and prepares to abandon his mission, but reconsiders once Flairmidable approaches him and exchanges Ladybug's yo-yo for the Peacock Miraculous, enabling him to steal all of the Miraculous, sans Ladybug and Cat Noir's. It is left unclear whether or not Shadow Moth revoked Strikeback's Amok and released it from existence, or if Strikeback and its clones are still imprisoned in the sun.
Trivia[]
- Strikeback bears a strong resemblance to the Destroyer from the Marvel Universe. Its body shape is also reminiscent of the Laputa Robots from the 1986 anime film Castle in the Sky.
- It is the first Sentimonster not to go berserk when touching Cataclysm, given its ability to copy any power it was used on it directly or touching any superpower.
- This could be one of the most powerful Sentimonsters, the second being the Ladybug Sentimonster.
- Like Feast and Sentibubbler, Strikeback is one of the few Sentimonsters to speak on their own while being controlled, rather than having their controller speak through them.
- Strikeback is the fourth Sentimonster to have its Amok hidden in Shadow Moth's cane, after Senti-Alec, Senti-Nino, and Hack-San.
- Due to this, it is also the first Sentimonster to be defeated without its Amok ever being released, as Ladybug and her team are unaware of Shadow Moth's location and are instead forced to drop Strikeback into the sun to stop it.
- Strikeback's ability to copy Miraculous powers is similar to Miraculer, one of Hawk Moth's previous Akumatized villains. However, unlike Miraculer, Strikeback can seemingly only steal powers if it comes into direct contact with them.
