~ Sumeragi |
King Sumeragi is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Garon) of Nintendo's 2015 tactical role-playing video game Fire Emblem Fates.
He was the king/shogun of Hoshido and led his country during a war against the Kingdom of Nohr. However, he died at the hands of the Nohrian King Garon and was revived by Anankos, the mastermind behind the war, as an insane enforcer.
He is also the father of Ryoma, Hinoka, Takumi and Sakura, the second husband of Queen Mikoto, the step-father of Corrin, and the step-uncle of Azura.
He was voiced by Taketora in Japanese and by David Stanbra in English.
Biography[]
Before Fates[]
Sumeragi was the monarch of Hoshido, a kingdom which was at war with his neighbor Nohr. He was ruling Hoshido alongside his first wife, Ikona. When Mikoto escaped from Valla alongside her child, Corrin, she came to Hoshido, and asked Sumeragi and Ikona for help. The two kindly kept Mikoto and Corrin safe, and sometime later, Ikona passed away. Soon, Sumeragi married Mikoto and therefore became the step-father of Corrin.
When the king of Nohr, Garon proposed him to discuss negociation, Sumeragi accepted his offer, believing that Garon wanted to end the war. He went to the meeting with his step-child Corrin.
Alas, Garon was actually a possessed corpse manipulated by an insane god called Anankos who wanted to destroy humanity, and when Sumeragi reached Cheve- the town where the meeting was taking place - he fell victim to one of Garon's traps and sacrificed himself so Corrin could survive the ambush. Corrin was captured by Garon and raised in Nohr, while Sumeragi was revived as an insane undead by Anankos so he would act as his assassin.
He then became one of the mad god's most prominent enforcers and is now one of Corrin and their allies' most dangerous foe as Valla's commander and Anankos' last line of defense.
Prologue[]
Sumeragi first appears in chapter 5, where he's tasked by Anankos to kill Corrin during a ceremony at Shirasagi Castle Town, the capital of Hoshido. He creates a giant explosion in an attempt to kill his child, causing the death of countless civilians in the process. Corrin survives the attack though, which leads Sumeragi to attack them, only for Mikoto, Sumeragi's widow and Corrin's mother to take the hit and die. The shock of withnessing their mother's death leads Corrin to turn into a feral dragon (Corrin being half dragon) and cause mayhem in the city. Ryoma, the high prince of Hoshido arrives and fights off Sumeragi. After being defeated by his son's forces, the assassin is forced to flee and Corrin reverts back to normal thanks to their cousin Azura's help.
Birthright[]
Sumeragi returns in chapter 11 and leads the Vallite army into attacking the Hoshidan army's ship. He sends his soldiers against the forces of Corrin, Takumi, Sakura and Hinoka and apparently vanishes at the end of the battle, only to return and to attack by surprise Takumi in an attempt to slay him. However, he's stopped by Zola, a Nohrian mage working with the heroes, who takes the blow meant for Takumi. Sumeragi ultimately retreats once more, while Sakura heals Zola.
Revelation[]
Sumeragi finally reveals himself as the revived former king of Hoshido and Mikoto's killer to the heroes, all while challenging them into battle one last time, in chapter 25. He forces his children to go through a trapped area in order to prove him that they are worthy opponents. After they clear the area and reach the fallen warlord, Corrin and Ryoma confront the assassin for their last fight alongside their friends and defeat him
After his defeat, Sumeragi's sanity and kindness are restored and he dies peacefully in his children's arms while apologising to Corrin for failing to prevent their capture by King Garon. As he dies for good, his corpse disappears into light.
