The Sun On Yee Triads are the main antagonists of the video game Sleeping Dogs. They are one of at least two Triad gangs operating within Hong Kong and are one of the most influential and powerful gangs in the city. Protagonist Wei Shen infiltrates their ranks as an undercover cop, starting as a mere foot soldier of Winston Chu's Water Street Gang, and eventually working his way up to the position of Red Pole. Throughout the events of the game, the hierarchy of the gang fluctuates, leading to a massive and violent power struggle that ultimately ends with Red Pole 'Broken Nose' Jiang ascending to the position of Dragon Head, leader of the entire gang. They are enemies of their rivals the 18k Triads.

History[]

The Sun On Yee Triads have been active in Hong Kong for at least several decades, and during that time have risen up to be the most powerful and influential gang in the city. They were lead by Dragon Head Uncle Po during this time, and while some of the Red Poles had aspirations to one day take his place, some of them even violently so, Po kept them all in line and they all, for the most part, respected him as leader. Over time, two members of the younger generation would rise to power and attain the position of Red Pole and create two powerful subsets; Winston Chu and his Water Street Gang, and Sam Lin and his Jade Gang. Originally childhood best friends, Winston and Dogeyes would become bitter mortal enemies, but would not overly engage one another.

It wasn't until Dogeyes gained the favor and backing up of Big Smile Lee that a brutal gang war would erupt between Water Street and Jade, a conflict so violent and destructive it would permanently alter the future and structure of the Sun On Yee. During this time, Wei Shen, childhood friend of the crew of Water Street, would infiltrate the gang as an undercover cop with the task of bringing the Sun On Yee down, while also having a deep personal vendetta against Dogeyes. Wei would rise up to become Winston's right hand-man, and as the gang war hit a peak and Dogeyes ordered the slaughter of Winston's wedding, Wei would take his position as Red Pole and leader of the Water Street crew. With Uncle Po critically wounded during the attack, and later his assassination, internal conflict with the Triad gang erupted into a city wide power struggle with violence and collateral reaching an all time high.

The two dominant factions vying for leadership were Red Poles Broken Nose Jiang, and Big Smile Lee, the two most powerful Red Poles of the Sun On Yee. Lee was the most successful of the two with record profits, but his methods were extreme, twisted, and cruel. Jiang disagreed vehemently on this, preferring to maintain Uncle Po's position of keeping tradition, honor and to her, most importantly, discretion, things Henry was all too aggressively against. The conflict between the two consumed Hong Kong's criminal underworld, with neither Jiang nor Wei knowing that Wei's boss Superintendent Pendrew was in on it the entire time and had secretly been working with Uncle Po for decades, allowing both men to rise through the ranks of their respective organizations.

As the power struggle came to a peak, Henry would finally be killed, allowing Jiang to ascend as the new Dragon Head of the Sun On Yee. With Wei's role as a cop exposed, and now aware of Pendrew's corruption and malice, his fate appeared to be sealed. However, Jiang, instead of ordering Wei's death, acknowledged that while he was a member of the police, he still showed loyalty to her and aided her in her rise to power. For this, she granted Wei safe departure from the Sun On Yee, as well as provided him with evidence that allowed him to both exposed and imprison Pendrew, ironically, in poetic justice, locking him up with all the Triads his operation backstabbed and imprisoned.
