Buddha! You had me imprisoned for 500 years! But now I'm free! And now I will destroy you!
~ Sun Wukong to the Buddha.

Sun Wukong is the main antagonist of the 2013 comedy fantasy film Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, which is loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Here, he's portrayed as far more villainous than his original counterpart. He returns as an anti-hero/supporting protagonist in its sequel, Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back.

He was portrayed by Huang Bo in Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons and Lin Gengxin in Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back. In the Japanese Dub of Stephen Chow's Journey To The West Trilogy, Sun Wukong He Was voiced by Kōichi Yamadera, who also voices Beerus from Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Gentle from My Hero Academia, Balrog from Street Fighter, Hoopa Unbound from Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, Cat Mask Seller from A Whisker Away, Alva from Pokémon: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, Demon King Jackal from The Ultraman and Akihiko Kayaba from Sword Art Online.

Appearance[]

In this version, Wukong looks far more horrifying, appearing as a short and rather wrinkly monkey, wearing an armor with three flags behind his back. He also wears a hat with yellow feathers. However, he becomes more like his original counterpart in the sequel.

In his human form, he appears as a bald, middle-aged man in ragged clothes.

Personality[]

This version of Wukong is far more cruel and brutal than his original counterpart, having no qualms causing mass murders and gleefully murdering Duan to break Tang Sanzang's will, showing his sadism. He's also more manipulative, having manipulated Sanzang into breaking the seal of the Wuzhi Mountain to escape it, and then shows no gratitude for the latter afterwards. In addition, Wukong is also shown to be more perverted than in the original, having flirted with Duan for fun. However, once the Buddha purifies him, he redeems himself, albeit still with some of his old tendencies.

Biography[]

Past[]

Like his original counterpart, Wukong was once the Monkey King and member of the brotherhood of demon kings 500 years ago. Due to his crimes, the Buddha sealed him inside the Wuzhi Mountain with a seal whose lotus roots prevented him from escaping until he achieves enlightenment. Wukong would then take a human form and scheme to escape and have his revenge on the Buddha.

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons[]

500 years later, Tang Sanzang visits Wukong thanks to his master's instruction to ask for his help to subdue the pig demon. After Wukong easily subdues the demon and turned it into a puppet, he tricks Sanzang into removing the seal, allowing him to escape and regain his true form. As the three demon hunters fights him, Wukong easily defeats them all. When they tries to escape, he kills them all with his roar. Terrified, Sanzang prays to the Buddha, to which Wukong responds angrily by ripping off Sanzang's hair. Angered, Duan, Sanzang's female companion, tries to attack Wukong, only to be killed and ripped apart by the Monkey King himself in order to break Sanzang.

However, it turns out that Duan accidentally reassembled the words of Sanzang's books into those of the Buddha Sutra, allowing Sanzang to summon the Buddha. Fueled with vengeance, Wukong tries to attack the Buddha, only for the latter to defeat and purify the Monkey King by his palm. Sanzang then places Duan's golden ring on Wukong's head and it turns into his headband. Wukong then becomes Sanzang's disciple, ending his villainous role.

Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back[]

In the sequel, Wukong initially appears to be back to his old ways and betray Sanzang for his own gain, but it turns out to be a ploy by both of them in order to expose the demon Jiu Gong.
