As I thought... 15%, was a little too much.
~ Sun Wukong realizes that he overdid it by using 15% of his power against Prometheus.

Sun Wukong, also known as Qitian Dasheng, is an anti-villain turned major character in the manga Record of Ragnarok Forbidden Legend - Apocalypse of The Gods, a spin-off of the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.

Sun Wukong is a God of the Chinese Pantheon known as the Monkey King that in the past defeated many opponents who had threatened his freedom, including Gods themselves, earning him the nickname Unbreakable. He is also one of the 16 Gods who participate in the Apocalypse Tournament to win the last place in the Gods Fighters of the Ragnarok Tournament and the possibility of creating a new law in the Constitution of Valhalla.

Appearance[]

Sun Wukong is a humanoid-looking God with black hair shaped like a porcupine and yellow eyes under black sunglasses. He wears an open green long-sleeved jacket, thus showing his bare chest, with golden cuffs and interior, a golden tiara as a necklace, long black trousers held up by a rose-shaped buckle and moccasins. He always carries his blue staff with gold tips. During his Journey to the West, Wukong had short hair and did not wear glasses.

Personality[]

Sun Wukong is a God who is uninterested in everything around him, including events that directly affect him such as the announcement of the Gods Fighters. He loves to doze off and can't stand anyone who disturbs him while he's trying to rest. He was once known for being a troublemaker, to the point of earning the nickname "Problem Child", but over time he calmed down enough to surprise even Zeus.

Furthermore, Sun Wukong is an excellent observer, as he is the first to notice details that other Gods do not notice. Indeed, Sun Wukong tries to analyze the battles he sees in order to use them as a basis for his matches, but is disappointed if he hasn't gathered enough information and is surprised if an opponent exceeds his expectations. What is most important to him is to be free, and he opposes anyone who tries to take away his freedom, including Gods themselves. Sun Wukong isn't particularly interested in battles that don't capture his attention, fighting them every now and then just to pass the time, and this is because after the Journey to the West he rested on his laurels, deciding to remain a minor God despite the power he accumulated during the journey.

When he fights, Wukong is bored by never having opponents at his height, and sometimes exaggerates the power of his blows, ending up damaging the opponent more than expected. Sun Wukong does not have a violent nature, and avoids killing his opponents unless absolutely necessary. At the same time, he believes that Humanity is too rotten to be saved and has a cynical view of Humans after seeing all the atrocities they committed during his Journey to the West, although he was shocked by Prometheus's words in favor of Humanity and in the end, also remembering Tang Sanzang's words, he decides to win the Apocalypse Tournament to save Humanity.

Biography[]

Sun Wukong is a God from the Chinese Pantheon who has caused enough trouble in the past to temporarily earn the nickname "Problem Child". At some point, Wukong and his two companions Sha Wujing and Zhu Bajie embarked on a journey to India to obtain religious scriptures from them along with a Human monk named Tang Sanzang. The tales of his journey were recorded by Humanity under the title "Journey to the West", and reading these collections was considered a form of entertainment. Along his journey, Sun Wukong fought countless high-ranking entities including Gods themselves, such as Taishang Laojun, Jin Jiao & Yin Jiao, Enma and Niu Mowang who had threatened his freedom, but he managed to defeat them all.

To overcome them, after countless victories and defeats, he developed his Shifàng Wēili, transforming the attacks his indestructible body contained into destructive energy, which granted him the subsequent title of Great Sage, Equal to Heaven: He Who Stands Shoulder to Shoulder with the Gods. To train to achieve this state, Sun Wukong participated in the war between the Evil Gods and the Synthetic Gods, and on this occasion he ended up clashing with Nezha: the two, after seventeen days of battle, ended with nothing, and the true outcome of this match was erased from history, transforming it into a victory for Sun Wukong.

Among the Outer Gods, he was given the title Unbreakable, signifying the infinite endurance granted to him by erasing his name from Enma's mythical ledger, eating the "peaches of immortality" and drinking Taishang Laojun's "golden elixir of long life". Although Wukong successfully completed his journey, it did not change Humanity's personality much, which infuriated him and made him think that Humanity was not worthy of salvation, even though Tang Sanzang explained to him that Humanity was worth fighting for. Furthermore, Wukong becomes so disinterested in everything that he remains a minor God despite the enormous power he has accumulated during his journey.

Millennia later, after the proclamation of the Ragnarok Tournament, Sun Wukong participates indifferently in the meeting of the Gods' Council in which Zeus announces the Gods Fighters that would fight in the Ragnarok Tournament representing the Gods. Many Gods become angry at the absence of their names, including Morrígan who prepares to attack Zeus for the insult she has suffered, but the Goddess is blocked by Sun Wukong, which makes everyone notice that a name is missing from the list. That's when Zeus announces the Apocalypse Tournament between 16 Gods to win the last place in the Gods Fighters and the possibility of inserting a new law into the Constitution of Valhalla.

Sun Wukong also participates. While waiting for his match, Sun Wukong witnesses the battle between Cú Chulainn and Ra-Horakhty, which ends with Cú Chulainn's victory. Sun Wukong in the Round of 16 faces Prometheus and, after taking several hits from his opponent, Sun Wukong hits Prometheus with a single attack delivered with 15% of his power, enough to make Prometheus faint and give Sun Wukong the victory, but not before Prometheus tells him that Humanity is worth fighting for despite Wukong having a cynical view of them. Prometheus' words end up moving Wukong internally, who, thinking back to Tang Sanzang's words about Humanity, push Wukong to announce that, if he won the Apocalypse Tournament, he would save Humanity.

Sun Wukong's opponent in the Quarter Finals will be Cú Chulainn. During the match between Nezha and Morrígan, Sun Wukong remains outside the arena to rest, which greatly irritates Nezha, who decided to enter the Apocalypse Tournament only for the chance to defeat Sun Wukong.

Powers and Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: As a God, Sun Wukong possesses physical abilities far superior to those of any ordinary Human. His body cannot be damaged by mortal weapons, however it can still be damaged by unarmed attacks from individuals with superhuman strength and Divine Weapons. For the same reason, Sun Wukong is unable to die due to old age. Sun Wukong is also able to analyze battles and thus understand the strengths of the various contenders.

The Great Sage Equal to Heaven: Sun Wukong is powerful enough to have defeated opponents such as Taishang Laojun, Jin Jiao & Yin Jiao, Niu Mowang and Enma and to be held up as the favorite for the final victory of the Apocalypse Tournament. The only one who managed to stand up to Sun Wukong is Nezha, in fact the two after seventeen days of fighting ended with nothing, for this reason Sha Wujing and Zhu Bajie consider Nezha the only one in the Apocalypse Tournament capable of giving Sun Wukong problems. He possesses such resistance that he can resist the attacks of Prometheus, known for his immense physical power, and he was able to easily defeat Prometheus using a single strike imbued with 15% of his power.

Staff Skills: Sun Wukong uses a staff called Ruyi Jingu Bang in battle, and it appears that his staff can be extended and retracted as he wishes, and can be used as a catalyst to pour the energy that Wukong has accumulated within himself from suffering attacks throughout his life onto the opponent.

Force Absorption: Sun Wukong has accumulated within himself the energy of the attacks he has suffered throughout his life, and is able, through his Ruyi Jingu Bang staff, to pour it against his opponent as destructive energy, capable of destroying him physically and psychologically. Only 15% of this energy release was more than enough to badly reduce Prometheus, who over the millennia has suffered continuous torture and is accustomed to pain, even causing him to faint.

Trivia[]

  • Although Sun Wukong was born as the protagonist literary character of the Chinese novel Journey to the West, the character soon entered the collective imagination and was inserted directly into Chinese Mythology.
  • In the Record of Ragnarok series Sun Wukong is known by the name "Qitian Dasheng", which is the original title of the Chinese short story The Great Sage, Heaven's Equal, in which a Shandong native Xu Sheng initially rejects the existence of Sun Wukong, but then ends up becoming a devoted servant after meeting him and testing his strength.
  • Although Sun Wukong does not behave as an antagonist in Record of Ragnarok, he can be considered as such since, being a member of the Gods' Council, he voted for the extermination of Humanity and seems to be disinterested in anything that has to do with his destiny.
