Sunstorm is a supporting antagonist in the Transformers: Animated cartoon. He is a Starscream clone whose dominant personality is extremely sycophancy (being a "suck-up").
He was voiced by Tom Kenny, who also voiced Starscream and most of the other clones.
Biography[]
Sunstorm is part of an army of clones of the original Starscream the second season two-parter A Bridge Too Close, with each clone representing an exaggerated part of himself. In Sunstorm's case, he represented Starscream's boot-licking and sycophantic side, constantly lavishing praise on anyone, whether friend or foe. During the space bridge battle, Sunstorm freed Ramjet from stasis cuffs, and managed to pull the same trick on Prowl. He made sure to tell the Autobot how impressed he was with Prowl's use of the cuffs, so much so that he had to try the move out himself. He and the others joined up with Megatron against Starscream, and when Omega Supreme arrived, Sunstorm briefly sucked up to him, before being blasted.
With both Megatron and Starscream teleported away by a space bridge, Sunstorm made a few more appearances during the third season. He was the first Decepticon to be captured by Lockdown, who turned him over to Sentinel Prime. Sunstorm was eager to tell the Autobots about how fantastic his capture was, but Sentinel Prime cut him off by clamping his mouth shut. In Sunstorm's last appearance, "Decepticon Air", he and the other prisoners on the ship were released by Swindle and took control from Sentinel Prime. Optimus Prime, along with Jetfire and Jetstorm, came to the rescue and tricked the Decepticons into trying to use a freezing unit on the Autobots. He had reversed the settings so it froze the Decepticons instead. Sunstorm and the others were taken back to Cybertron as prisoners.
Pesonality[]
Sunstorm is characterized by his "flattering, 'suck-up' nature incarnate". He constantly offers fawning platitudes and compliments to anyone he encounters, friend or foe, even while fighting them. This personality trait is a humorous take on a facet of the original Starscream's own personality, as all of the Starscream clones in the series embody one of his core traits. His loyalty is fluid, shifting to whoever is currently dominant or in control, as long as he believes it benefits him or they are "worthy" of his praise
Appearance[]
Sunstorm is an orange robot with a lanky build, featuring wide shoulders and long arms that contrast with a skinny lower torso and legs. He is predominantly bright orange, with red details on his wings and a transparent red canopy on his chest. His feet and forearms are white, while his face is black with a white faceplate (or "mouth plate") and his eyes are red. Unlike other Starscream clones who share the original head, Sunstorm wears a unique, boxy helmet that is reminiscent of the Generation 1 Seeker character, distinguishing him visually from his "brothers".
Trivia[]
- In the planned, but unproduced, Season 4 of Transformers Animated, Sunstorm would have remained a prisoner within the new Trypticon Prison in Kaon, Cybertron. He would not have had a major individual storyline, but would have been part of the general Decepticon prisoner population.
