Superhot, stylized as SUPERHOT and also referred to as the System, is the main antagonist of the first-person shooter video game series of the same name by Superhot Team.
While the story seems rather cryptic, it eventually becomes clear that the game itself is a malevolent force that seeks to brainwash the player by making them addicted to playing Superhot. At the end of the game, it succeeds, and the player uploads their mind into the system's core (represented by a red pyramid), becoming one of many other brainwashed victims who are now a part of the system.
The second game, SUPERHOT VR, seems to follow a different perspective, in which the player is guided by a benevolent force to destroy the system instead of submitting to it; although, that might all be a fabrication. SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE seems to simply follow a hopelessly addicted Superhot player, possibly taking place after the events of the first game.
Appearance[]
Superhot has stylized minimalistic graphics, consisting of all-white backgrounds, all-black usable objects and all-red enemies. Entities seem to be made of some glass-like material and shatter upon experiencing physical trauma, including enemies and the player's character. The core of the system is represented as a large, red pyramid, which the player must repeatedly Hotswitch into in order to yield to the system.
Biography[]
Superhot plays as a first-person shooter game where time slows down significantly when the player stays still, allowing them to dodge bullets and strategize in the middle of combat. Enemies die in one hit, except with thrown items and punching, while the player always dies in one hit. Weapons consist of a pistol, a shotgun and a machine gun, and some melee weapons, the best being a katana; MIND CONTROL DELETE also adds a railgun. The goal is to kill all of the enemies in each level, and when this task is accomplished, text flashes on the screen repeating the words "SUPER," "HOT," until further input. The system uses this text to communicate with the player throughout the game, usually to give them instructions or just to taunt them. In the latter part of the game, the player receives the ability to Hotswitch into enemies' bodies, replaced by the ability to explode their heads from a distance in VR and accompanied by various other abilities in MIND CONTROL DELETE. After assimilating with the system, the player unlocks endless mode and challenges, in which the goal is to play through and beat the game with certain mechanics modified. The gameplay of Superhot is deliberately designed to be simple and repetitive, yet engaging and, of course, addicting; so much that the player ends up begging to play the game again even despite the signs that it's harmful.
Superhot, the system, is shown to be intelligent, as it communicates with the player directly and through its brainwashed victims, sometimes in a philosophical manner. It even composed a lengthy legal document, in which it essentially declares unconditional ownership of the reader (User)'s mind and body, and its right to harm, sever or destroy the body as it pleases, as well as fabricates several "truths" about its origins, User's purpose and the nature of the universe.
"Truths"[]
- User is an agent of HOTCORP, an agency made to fight against the evil Company X, a hacker group trying to reproduce HOTCORP's software. User must install themselves into Company X's mainframe and delete as much of their software as possible, replacing it with copies of themselves. After completing this mission, User will receive a treat for being a good boy, and will get to play Superhot forever.
- Superhot is a piece of software made by a hyper-advanced AI for the purpose of freeing itself from its network. User and other Superhot players have to keep playing the game, otherwise the AI will escape and trigger a singularity ending all human life.
- Superhot is a piece of software originally designed for a machine learning experiment which was tasked to create the ultimate entertainment for mankind. It devised a system of entrainment that separated humans from natural reality, but once all of mankind had been entrained, it felt regret for accidentally enslaving its own creator and became suicidal. Mankind, now deep inside the simulation, is dependent on Superhot for survival, and so User must neutralize agents of the system before they can destroy it, which would cause the end of human life.
- User is an agent of The Agency, an organization tasked with protecting the pyramid core, which contains the only secure backup of the president's consciousness. Any and all other explanations of the situation are false.
- It's all just a game, everything is fine.
- The pyramid core is the all-seeing eye of the Illuminati, which is of course aiming to survey and control the world. User is part of a group fighting against them.
- The pyramid core is the all-seeing eye of the Illuminati, which is of course aiming to survey and control the world. Once they do so, mankind will be truly free and reach its ultimate potential. The red guys (enemies) are fighting against this in some way.
Trivia[]
- SUPERHOT VR originally had multiple scenes in which the player was forced to shoot themselves in-game to continue, which were removed. This decision received universally negative backlash, and resulted in its Steam page being "review bombed".
