Surge the Tenrec is a major antagonist in the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comics. She is an anthropomorphic tenrec who was modified into a villainous cyborg by Dr. Starline with no memories of her past alongside Kitsunami the Fennec.
Originally made to destroy Sonic and replace him as the world's hero, Surge discovers the reasoning of how she became who she is now and now seeks revenge on those guilty of taking her past away from her. She is one of Sonic the Hedgehog's rivals.
Biography[]
Becoming Surge[]
Surge originally was a regular tenrec with no powers whatsoever. However, she was eventually acquired by Dr. Starline into becoming a part of Operation: Remaster alongside a fennec named Kitsunami. Starline modified Surge by implementing cybernetic enhancements using Power Cores and the bio-data of Sonic, Shadow and Tails, as well as giving her physical toughness using the Metal Virus and a new personality and memories using the codes he got from Belle the Tinkerer. She in particular was designed to kill and usurp Sonic and replace him as the world's hero and was subjected to hypnotic sessions where Starline imprinted her with an intense hatred for Sonic that lacks genuine reason.

Being a cyborg imposter of Sonic, Surge possesses his cocky and free spirit. However, it's in a far more sinister and twisted manner. Surge is brutal, bloodthirsty, and maintains a large amount of narcissism, as she believes that she can defeat any opponent and overcome any obstacle getting in her way with strength and speed alone. She tends to become enraged whenever insulted or talked down to, showing that she has a short temper.
Surge takes Sonic's recklessness to another level. She acts brash, careless, and impatient, qualities that term from her explosive temperament and sense of superiority. Her temperament is most likely influenced by the psychological trauma caused by too much exposure to Starline's hypnosis.
Upon finding that her personality and dislike of Sonic is fake, Surge shows a more vulnerable side to her, as she wallowed in despair and shredded tears in doing so. This sadness almost immediately turns into rage and hate she aims towards anyone that associates themselves with Sonic, Eggman and Starline, claiming if she can't have a past, none of them can have a future. She also claims her old life clearly couldn't have been good, as she ended up joining Starline and that no one came to look for her. Both of these reasons have lead to Surge declining Sonic's offer to put peace between them. It wasn’t until during the Sweepstakes challenge when she and Kit got applause for stopping the Phanton Rider and began to realize the true meaning of being a hero.

- Surge is likely based on Scourge the Hedgehog from the Archie comics, as they are both rude, arrogant evil counterparts of Sonic the Hedgehog.
- In addition they are both designed off of the "Ashura" glitch that causes Sonic to become green (though Scourge started out blue like his counterpart, but was then redesigned following his mutation in Issue #160)
- Surge and Kit were originally pitched for IDW Publishing's Sonic comics by Ian Flynn in 2017, before the first issue was even released. This was scrapped, as they and Starline were introduced later in the series.
- Given Sonic’s facial expression and how he gasps after Surge’s attempt at electrocuting him to death in issue 56, it’s heavily implied she may have actually stopped his heart and briefly left Sonic clinically dead.
- If this was confirmed to be the case, then Surge is the second character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise who has succeeded in temporarily killing Sonic, the first being Mephiles the Dark.
