Biography[]
Suzy Branning first came to Albert Square in Walford, a fictional borough in East London, from 1996. She is a member of the Branning Family whose marriage to her husband, Ken, broke down despite the couple having two children: Rebecca and Kevin. In that year, she attends the wedding of her older sister April and her fiance Nikos that ends in disaster. Later on they attend the wedding of Suzy and April's eldest sister Carol and her husband Alan Jackson. Following the two ceremonies, Suzy leaves the square.
In 2008, Suzy reappears as a beautician who is having dire financial straits. She contacts her brother Max Branning for help, and in turn he asks his business rival Phil Mitchell to meet up with Suzy at her salon near the square. Phil does so and Suzy explains that she is looking out for her friend, Tantasy, and is also hiding from a group of thugs who work for her ex-boyfriend Ahmet. Soon enough Ahmet and his thugs come looking for Suzy, but Phil helps her escape before taking her back to the square.
Afterwards, Suzy and Phil begin a relationship after they have sex together. She moves into his family home, The Queen Victoria public house, and also reunites with Max along with their fellow sibling Jack. Her relationship with Phil continues to the point where she helps Max's estranged wife Tanya manage her salon. At the same time, Suzy attempts to bond with Phil's son Ben Mitchell - which proves difficult due to the fact that Ben had been abused by Phil's ex-fiance, Stella Crawford, a year ago. However, Ben eventually warms to Suzy and they get along for a while. As such, Suzy attempts to get along with her estranged father Jim and his wife Dot. She also clashes with Jim's friend, Patrick Trueman, at one stage when he accuses her of stealing his potatoes; she had buried something in the allotments near his B&B but claims to have not stolen anything from him.
Eventually, Suzy's relationship with Phil gets in trouble when he develops romantic feelings for bartender Shirley Carter. This was first speculated by Suzy long after she joined Phil at the wedding of her cousin Roxy and her husband Sean Slater, but suspicions are further escalated when Suzy and Shirley begin a feud with each other. When Suzy believes that Phil plans to dump her in favour of Shirley, she claims to be pregnant with his child; Phil believes Suzy and chooses her over Shirley. Eventually the ruse is discovered by Shirley and her best friend Heather Trott when the duo find evidence that proves Suzy is not pregnant after all. However, Suzy fakes a miscarriage and tricks Phil into believing that Shirley caused it. But then Roxy and Ben learn the truth from Shirley and they finally manage to expose her to Phil, who in turn breaks up with Suzy beyond repair.
In retribution for getting dumped, Suzy attempts to rob Phil by stealing from the family safe. She fails after being caught out by Phil's uncle and Roxy's father, Archie Mitchell, whom Suzy fears will report her to the police later on. However, Archie instead blackmails Suzy into helping out with his scheme to destroy Roxy's marriage with Sean in order to prevent her from moving away with him; Suzy agrees after Archie claims that he will pay her money should she succeed on his behalf. Soon enough the pair uncover DNA results that prove Sean is not the biological father of Roxy's daughter Amy. Seeing this as an opportunity to split up Roxy and Sean for good, Archie tells Suzy to plant the DNA results in Sean's Christmas cracker for his family's upcoming Christmas meal.
On Christmas Day 2008, Suzy is kicked out by Phil for lying about her pregnancy. She then disrupts the Mitchell's Christmas dinner and insults them one by one. Suzy also berates Jack over his relationship with Roxy's sister, Ronnie, and also tries to humiliate Phil's mother Peggy over the way she would sometimes favour Phil's brother Grant Mitchell over him and think less about her daughter Sam Mitchell at the time. She also attempts to discredit Phil's cousin Billy Mitchell before turning her attention to Archie. Eventually she leaves, but later on her collaboration to Archie's plan works successfully when Sean discovers the DNA results and his relationship with Roxy ends beyond repair.
Soon enough, however, Suzy suspects that Archie will not pay her the money he promised and decides to go through with stealing Phil's £10,000 from the family safe. She appears to be successful, but Shirley ultimately foils subdues Suzy in a confronation between them at The Vic. Shirley knocks Suzy out, takes back the money before Suzy comes around, and then burns it in front of her before telling Suzy to get out of Walford for good. Suzy then leaves the square with nothing - having lost her family and with her family relationships in tatters.
Following her departure, Suzy is implicated by Archie to have caused the events of his schemes. In 2009 she writes to Peggy on a postcard from Dubai, saying that Archie paid her to cause trouble within the family and she didn't need his money after all. This is soon found by Ronnie's long-lost daughter Danielle Jones, who in turn learns that Archie set up everything and framed Suzy as the one responsible for the troubles. But Archie is able to intercept the letter before Peggy can discover it and he burns it to cover his tracks.
Later on Archie and Peggy's wedding day, Danielle - who had been trying to tell Ronnie that she is her long-lost mother and that Archie tried to prevent this from ever happening - attempts to regain her credibility by exposing Archie's scheme, including the fact that he paid Suzy to cause trouble within the family. Eventually Archie's lies and deceit are exposed, which leaves everyone angry at him for the trouble he has caused and Phil is particularly enranged to discover that his uncle had practially destroyed his relationship with Suzy by paying her off for conspiring with him.
Suzy would later be refrenced in the following years. She would often be mentioned by her eldest brother, Derek Branning, when the latter comes to Walford for a while. Later on when both Derek and Jim pass away in 2012 and 2015 respectively, Max delivers an eulogy that involves mentioning Suzy and her relationships with the duo. In the latter case, Max explains that Suzy and her sisters hated Jim so much they they did not bother to attend their father's funeral. In 2018, Max leaves the square for a brief time to stay with Suzy after the death of his daughter Abi Branning and her sister Lauren leaving the country for a new life.
