“ | Its original form is unrecognisable after years of scavenging scrap and rebuilding itself, but among scrapheads, the Swordsmachine is quite famous due to its combat prowess and selfmade form, ugly to most but beautiful to enthusiasts, spawning many copycats. | „ |
~ The swordmachines' terminal description. |
Swordsmachines are a sub-species of machines that serve as recurring enemies in Ultrakill. Robots that have contorted themselves for the purpose of battle, it is the first robotic enemy V1 encounters in their journey through Hell.
They are classified as Greater Machines, and debut in Level 0-2, "The Meatgrinder".
Appearance[]
Swordsmachines are large, humanoid robots, their bodies lined with exposed metal of a dark gray color and yellow plating. Perhaps the most notable aspect of their appearance is their heads, with it appearing as a elongated, pillar-like form with cyan LED "eyes". Reshaped for combat, not only have the robots granted themselves talon-like feet, but also two sets of humanoid arms. Its left arm is human in shape to allow for it to carry a chainsaw-like sword, while their right arm forgoes a second hand to instead wield a grated-on shotgun.
Members[]
Regular Variant[]
V1 first encounters the swordmachines in the game's prelude/Chapter 0, being fightable in a secret encounter in Chapter 0's second level ("The Meatgrinder") and in a mandatory encounter in the third ("Double Down"). In the first of these levels, one can first encounter a swordmachine making its way through the outskirts of the underworld, killing the various demons it encounters with ease. While the player normally loses sight of their foe as it escapes through a mechanical door, through climbing through vents, they are able to fight against it in a noticeably small arena.
In their first "proper" appearance, V1 encounters a swordmachine twice in "Double Down". While all of its attacks are telegraphed, the swordmachine has three methods of attack to keep the player on their toes. These attacks consist of three slashes with its sword at close range, a jump slash preformed after it dashes forward, and a blast from its shotgun at far range. During this encounter, the player only has to lower the swordmachines health to 50% in order to sever the Core Eject Shotgun from its arm, forcing the swordmachine to run off. Rencountering its robotic rival later in the level, the swordsmachine gains two new attacks in place of its missing shotgun arm, with the swordmachine now able to throw its sword forward and spin it in a circular motion. When parried in either of these encounters, the swordmachine will turn a vibrant red as it enters its enraged state, performing its three-swipe combo and jump slash attacks significantly faster than before.
Once V1 reaches the level of Heresy, regular swordsmachines can be found as normal enemies. They fight identically to their boss counterpart, although with their second phase occurring immediately after it reaches 50% health.
Agony and Tundra[]
The Swordsmachines Agony and Tundra are secret bosses found in the Level 1-3, "Halls of Sacred Remains". If the player completes both the red and blue halls and places both skulls on the central entrance, it unlocks a hidden door that leads to the secret boss.
Agony and Tundra are befittingly red and blue variants of the blade-wielding swordsmachine, with Agony being permanently enraged while Tundra has its second phase arsenal. Alongside this, they have faster attack patterns, attack together, and have the ability to revive each other should only one remain alive for some time. As such, it is the player's task to whittle down the health bars of the robots together, making sure to take them both out before one can revive the other.
Trivia[]
- Agony and Tundra's names are in reference to Agni and Rudra, a pair of bosses fought together in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening.
