Syd Booth Goggle also known as The Strip Strangler is the main antagonist of the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation first season finale "Strip Strangler". Goggle is a serial killer and sexual abuser of women in their apartments in Las Vegas.

He's portrayed by Michael Cerveris.

Biography

Nothing is revealed about Goggle's past. Goggle worked as a security guard for an apartment complex and, because he was bald, wore a toupee to hide the fact. Goggle obsessed over women he saw at his gym, Strong's Gym, and decided to brutalize and murder them as he liked, singling out women who were tall and had brunette hair. His M.O. would be bludgeoning them with an item in their apartments to keep them from fighting, then drugging them with sodium amytal, a drug formerly believed to be a truth serum. After gagging each woman with a gym towel, they were repeatedly raped with objects in their homes and killed by repeated ligature strangulation, before they were degraded by posing them in their beds to look like pin-up models. Goggle took extensive measures to not leave traces of from his body at the scene, such as wearing surgical gloves, shaving his body, and vacuuming the scene before leaving with the bag.

Goggle, by the time of the episode, killed Audrey Hayes, Tracy Berg, and Eileen Snow, Eileen living in the very apartment complex where he worked. He appeared for the first time to speak with the CSIs and FBI Agent Rick Culpepper, hoping to feed false information to the investigation, such as a vehicle he lied was at the scene. The investigation saw numerous distractions, such as Brad Walden killing his wife to make her look like another Strangler victim and prostitute Hunter Baumgartner's semen being collected and planted at the scene of Eileen's murder. It's confirmed when the semen sample also tests positive for residual ketchup, which proved Goggle held the sample in ketchup packets.

Culpepper wants to prosecute Walden for all the murders, and the sheriff removes Gil Grissom from the case when he challenges the charges to a reporter. His team continues to work with him on the case, and they communicate the realization that the women were gagged with gym towels, so Grissom goes through the gyms the women worked out at. When Grissom also couldn't find tire tracks to corroborate Goggle's story, he knew he was lying and Goggle was the killer, which the team found out from finding him on the gym membership list.

Grissom found forensic manuals and textbooks at his apartment, as well as all his equipment to shave himself and sterilize the scenes. Packets of ketchup were found in his garbage. Grissom found Goggle in his complex's basement laundry room, washing the gym towels he stole. Goggle takes off his toupee and coldly confesses his crimes. He then strikes Grissom with a wrench and attempts to kill him with a shovel, but Catherine Willows arrives and shoots Goggle dead. The FBI and sheriff's department correct their wrongs publicly without any credit to the CSIs.

• Goggle is inspired by multiple real-life serial killers:
  • Timothy Wilson Spencer, a.k.a. "The Southside Strangler", a serial killer/rapist of women in their homes across the state of Virginia.
  • Danny Rolling, a.k.a. "The Gainesville Ripper", a serial killer/rapist of college students in Florida, who were violently mutilated and lewdly posed postmortem.
  • "The Boston Strangler", an unidentified serial killer/rapist of women in Boston, Massachusetts, who were raped and strangled in their beds. Suspect Albert DeSalvo confessed to the murders, but he was shanked in prison before he could be tried.
  • Ted Bundy, an American serial killer/rapist of brunette college women, working in security to divert suspicion from himself. He bludgeoned women and raped them with the same weapons.
