There's so much to discover before the world ends.
~ Sylens
I've been having problems of my own these past six months, Aloy. The difference is, I've made progress. So once your anger at my entirely necessary deception has faded… Why don't you come out here and find me in the Forbidden West and learn all that ye discovered?
~ Sylens revealing his deception to Aloy after the Battle of the Alight.

Sylens, also known as the Boogeyman (by Burgrend), is the deuteragonist of the 2017 video game Horizon Zero Dawn and a supporting character in its 2022 sequel Horizon Forbidden West. He is the founder of the Shadow Carja cult known as the Eclipse and later the rebel factions known as Regalla's Rebels and Sons of Prometheus.

A wandering traveller and an archaeologist, Sylens has spent decades of his life finding the fate of the Old Ones, which gives him a deep fascination with their history. He later crosses paths with Aloy, a Nora Huntress and a genetic clone of Elisabet Sobeck, whom he treats her more as an ally, to find out more about the Old Ones, as well as Aloy's true existence.

He is voiced and motion-captured by the late Lance Reddick, who portrayed Martin Hatch in the 2016 video game Quantum Break and its TV adaptation, General Lunaris in DuckTales and Albert Wesker (and his clones Al and Bert) in the 2022 Netflix show Resident Evil.

Appearance[]

Sylens is a middle-aged man, who is tall and has a dark skin. He is often seen wearing the Banuk Shaman's outfit, which consists of a standard blue, grey, and black clothing, as well as blue cables embedded into his body.

Personality[]

Sylens' defining trait is his erudition and his attachment to knowledge, but is also known to be questionable in approaching it, often causing him to resort into committing questionable and reckless acts in doing so. This includes committing acts of sacrilege in the new world, including ransacking the Banuk Conclave's treasures. He even goes so far in using other people for his pursuit, leading to the creation of the Eclipse, where he was later betrayed by HADES and Helis, and later created the Sons of Prometheus in the shadows by using Asera's hatred to the Carja.

Sylens often shows a severely cold and logical demeanour when pursuing knowledge, often putting logic first and emotions later, which is often a problem when he comes across with Aloy, who castigated her to stop whining about finding out about her connection with Elisabet Sobeck.

He is also not fond of ignorance, as when he castigates Aloy about it being a curse, when they found out about the APOLLO Archive 200's data being lost in the Zero Dawn Project Facility.

Abilities[]

  • Skilled Programmer: Sylens is unequalled in his ability to use Old Ones technologies. He was able to set up a network of Focuses as well as a back door through which he could monitor them without being noticed.
  • Polymath: Albeit in a crude way, Sylens is well-versed in a variety of areas as a result of his encounters with HADES and by exploring ancient ruins. Since the annihilation of the Old Ones, he is very probably the most intellectual person in the new planet. Despite that, however, Sylens would be bested by Beta, in terms of intelligence, whose college-level knowledge through APOLLO outweighed his crude intellect.
  • Archaic Knowledge: Sylens has spent much of his life studying the Old Ones, and he possesses possibly the most extensive knowledge of the Old Ones of any human living. His expertise encompasses the notion of companies, old medicinal procedures, and a working grasp of long-forgotten languages. He was able to conclude that Faro robots played a role in the Old Ones' civilization's demise, but he couldn't prove it until Aloy arrived.
  • Master Strategist: Sylens is a great strategist in addition to his vast knowledge.
  • Tribal Knowledge: Sylens has demonstrated that he is well-versed in Banuk and Carja legend. He knows enough about the Carja religion to be able to depict HADES as the Buried Shadow. While it is unknown whether he was ever a member of the Banuk tribe, his understanding of Shamanism is extensive enough that he might pass for a shaman, if not be one himself.
  • Master Deal Maker - Additionally, Sylens is able to convince both Regalla and Asera to form the rebels and the Sons of Prometheus, respectively, as proxies, as means to his end to target Far Zenith and escape Earth, but later ditched his efforts due to Aloy.

Trivia[]

  • Sylens' name is a pun of the word "silence", which is later demonstrated when he demonstrated actual silence during the events of To Curse the Darkness in Zero Dawn.
