| ~ Sylva hunting Mae. |
Sylva is the secondary antagonist of the 2024 sci-fi action film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the fourth installment of the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise. He is a brutish and sadistic silverback gorilla that serves as the right-hand lieutenant of Proximus Caesar.
As Proximus' enforcer, he leads the army of the Coastal Ape Colony through pure force. As such, he is in charge of overseeing the raiding of ape villages and abducting their people, having them become slaves for Proximus' kingdom on the latter's behalf.
He was portrayed by Eka Darville in motion-capture and his first villainous role. His ape vocals were provided by Kellen Goff, who also voiced Funtime Freddy/Molten Freddy and Moon in Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, Diavolo in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Fat Thief in Spooky Month, Rekka Hoshimiya in Fire Force, Techno-Pirate in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, Hans in Konosuba, Fiddlesticks in League of Legends, Kai Chisaki in My Hero Academia, and Zagred in Black Clover.
Appearance[]
Sylva is a large, muscular, fierce-looking western lowland gorilla with a bulky appearance and is often seen wearing a Roman-themed warrior attire consisting of orange/brownish shoulder pads made from scrap metal.
Personality[]
Sylva is a ruthless and sadistic warrior who leads many raids under brutal and hostile methods. He is a fanatical devotee to Proximus Caesar's reign, chanting his name upon killing leaders of previous clans, all while blindly disgracing Caesar's name shamelessly. Sylva is quick to anger at best and does not take kindly to failure and loss, as he roars in a fit of fury when Noa manages to rescue Mae in time. He has also proven rather vengeful, as he goes after Noa under petty circumstances and wide lack of concern of the situation when the dam had blown up, endangering the remaining apes. However, he still takes into holding back in the presence of Proximus and allowed Noa to be invited in spite of his grudges against him when he had his chance.
While he has immense strength and a commanding presence to keep his troops in line, in terms of strategy and tactics, he is lacking, and prone to being blinded by his rage. Sylva can defeat opponents when both are in direct combat, but for more complicated attacks, he requires direction from Proximus to be competent; when alone in an abnormal situation, he was angrily pursuing Noa, and not realising that the young chimp was leading the gorilla to trap himself between pipes - Sylva failed to understand that his larger frame wouldn't fit between the pipes, thus is left stuck and helpless to the ocean floods that drown him. Even trapped and drowning, Sylva's anger made him claw at the air, trying to grasp Noa, despite its futility.
Biography[]
There's not much known about Sylva's early life, however, at some point he eventually allowed himself into following the teachings of Proximus Caesar, believing in every word he has to say and fanatically devoted his entire life serving him. Becoming the loyal captain of Proximus' guards, Sylva took charge in raiding villages of fellow ape clans, using electrocuting staffs to shock them to unconsciousness or at best kill several of them, alongside their leaders, which he so much as strangle them to death, and later abducting the villagers forcibly into Proximus' kingdom to become his enslaved subjects.
At some point, he raided a human settlement that led to the deaths of many survivors - although a human named Mae survived the massacre. He also raided another ape village that led to only one member surviving; that being Raka, who believed in Caesar's true legacy.
Sylva is first seen attempting to track down Mae, accompanied by his guards and Lightning, witnessing corpses of his apes and a fellow tribesmen from Noa's village and spotted a cloth belonging to Mae, knowing she came from the village. Using Noa's horse to lead onto his village, Sylva and his men began rallying up the villagers, shock or kill some of them, and strangled their leading elder, chanting "For Caesar!" as his guards rejoice while burning said village to the ground. Spotting Noa trying to save his father, Koro, he climbed up the tower and proceed to engage combat with both of them.
Despite their best efforts, Sylva proven to be superior in terms of strength and when Noa was held by a nearby pole while the former pinned Koro on the floor, Sylva cuts off the pole to have Noa nearly fall into his death while killing Koro personally. Afterwards, Sylva and his men left with the abducted villagers and allow the village to continue burning before it became ashes on the ground. Noa eventually awakes and buries his father, swearing to bring back his people and seek vengeance on Sylva along with his warriors.
Sylva and his hunters later appear at the valley where a group of feral humans live. Upon seeing Mae with the feral humans, Sylva ordered his hunters to round them up. Mae managed to escape into the tall grass and hid as Sylva and his hunters stalked her. When Noa arrives, Mae calls out to him, alerting Sylva to her presence as well. Sylva tries to grab Mae but Noa beats him to the punch and escapes with Mae.
When Noa, Raka and Mae walk across a bridge above a rapid, Sylva and his hunters ambush them. As Raka gets caught in the current after saving Mae, Sylva sadistically cuts the net Raka is holding onto and watches as the orangutan seemingly drowns to death. He then captures Noa and Mae and brings them to the Coastal Ape Colony where they refuse to give any information against humans. Sylva leads the Ape Army as they unsuccessfully try to break into the vault which contains weapons, a tape about speech and power the Colonel Ape Army could use to kill the remaining humans.
The next morning, Proximus, Sylva and the other Apes catch Mae, Noa and his friends trying to sneak out of the vault. Proximus has Lightning hold Soona hostage as he demands entry into the vault. Suddenly, a gunshot is heard and Lightning falls to his death, having been shot by Mae with a gun she acquired from the vault. After Mae sets off the explosives destroying the dam and flooding the kingdom, Sylva vengefully chases after Noa as the latter instructs the other apes to climb onto tall objects to avoid drowning, blaming him for the kingdom being destroyed. Unable to overpower the gorilla, Noa tricks Sylva into getting stuck in a narrow gap between pipes and leaves him to drown, thus avenging the deaths of both his father and Raka.
Trivia[]
- He bears a minor resemblance to Attar, a gorilla character from Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes film.
- He is the second gorilla to speak in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise, the first was Red.
- Both also serve as secondary antagonists in their respective movie appearances.
- However, the difference between them is that Red redeems himself in the end, whereas Sylva lacks any redemption from start to finish.
