The Symbiotes are the main antagonists (alongside Hunters) in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Originally, the race started off with one symbiote codenamed "VNM-252", but once it had found its host, Harry Osborn, the two became Venom and spawned a massive hive-mind that began to spread and infect various citizens across New York City.

The exact extraterrestrial origins of the symbiotes remain relatively unknown but they initially started off from their progenitor, when it first came down to Earth in a small meteorite, sometime before 2018. It was discovered by a team from Oscorp, led by Norman Osborn and Dr. Curt Connors, who had his arm taken off when he approached too close to the symbiote. It was eventually taken back to Oscorp, given the codename VNM-252, dubbed as a "symbiote". Researchers would examine it for further study.
Norman would soon discover that the symbiote possessed regenerative and healing properties capable of treating his son, Harry, who was going through a disease that had also taken away his wife, Emily. Desperate to save his son by any means, Norman would use the symbiote to keep Harry alive for the time being.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2[]
After Harry bonded with the symbiote once more and became Venom, he proceeded to carry out his plans of "healing the world" by capturing various civilians and infecting them with a symbiote. Eventually, the symbiote infection grew large enough to plague the entire city once combining the meteorite, allowing the symbiotes to terrorize the majority of the city. The Spider-Men and Mary Jane Watson managed to destroy the meteorite and the Venom symbiote, with Harry being left comatose. Despite freeing citizens of New York from the symbiote, many continued to terrorize or protect nests across the city.
