Takeda Kanryū is the main antagonist of the 2012 live-action film Rurouni Kenshin, which is based on the manga of the same name.
Biography[]
Takeda Kanryū is introduced in his mansion at the edge of town talking about how humans are weak and are becoming monsters and he seaks profit and pleasure from this.
When Megumi greets him, Takeda congraguates her for her work and grants her a new pin before sending her away.
When a katana penetrates the wall and one of Takeda's servants get killed, he comes out of his chair and explains how he can use humans and one will be enough for him. After Megumi approches him and a man jumps out the window, he tells one of his to kill him.
Later that day, Takeda is fanning himself outside his mansion where he learns about a guest. He realizes that the person who called the police was not in custody. When he offers a watermelon, he learns an undercover cop was killed last night.
The killer was reportedly Battousai, a supposed phantom samurai from a previous decade. Asking if he was the killer, he is asked instead what he is storing at the Shinbashi Warehouse.
Takeda is assured that he'd not worry about it and nothing in it should be illegal and a warrant is required. When an officer asks him to stop where he is. Takeda tells him that the samurai has been gone a long time and things have been changed.
Takeda also states that samurai have no choice but to wander endlessly in the Meiji Era they are in as it is a bad time for them and they practically earn nothing from work.
Takeda also stated that dogs get to eat when hungry. When Takeda asks the officer if he's a samurai, he replies he is still one. Takeda tells him that there is no room for a mule from the government to fit.
The man tells Kanryū that he might not need proof and evidence, but rather the police might need it. When Kanryū finds that Megumi ran from the mansion, he hears about money being made in exchange for info from the police.
Kanryū gets mad over this betrayal and realises he might be in trouble. Takeda then orders Megumi to be brought back to him. Just then, Jin'ei, offers to find her as Kanryū needed her for her "purification methods" then do as he would like with Battousai.
After Megumi managed to escape, Tekada was very frustrated. When Kenshin and Kaoru head to a restraunt, they come across Takeda Kanryū who was coming in. Kaoru rushes towards the kitchen as Takeda calls for Kenshin's attention and asks if he was the one who beat down ten thugs at Kaoru's dojo.
Kenshin is offered wads of money in exchange for being Takeda's bodyguard. When he refuses even a purse of money, it turns out Kenshin is "the samurai who hasn't eaten, yet picks his teeth."
Takeda makes it a point that being rich is everything in the Meiji Era. However, Takeda states he does not take such riches too lightly and it can take one walk down the red-light district.
Takeda also stated someone's wife or even their daughters could be lost. Takeda also claims he is trying to free the world of samurai and throw all bandidts in prison.
When Kenshin continues to refuse, Takeda is furious at him throwing away his money when Sagara Sanosuke of the Brawlers arrives and takes up the job. Kenshin then asks Sanosuke to fight outside.
When Kenshin asks if Sanosuke was willing to work for a man-like Takeda Kanryū, Takeda is shocked and asks what was going on. When Takeda demands Sanosuke to kill him, the latter responds by telling him to shut his mouth.
Sanosuke then calls the fight off where Takeda realises who the real deal was and Battousai is not to be bought.
Back at his mansion, Takeda Kanryū unveils a gattling gun as he plans to smuggle this kind of weapon across the world and not just Japan, intending to start his very own ruling empire.
He also intends to have Kaoru's dojo suffer. When Megumi returns to his mansion, she greets Takeda at his office. This time, he is unwilling to let her leave as he wants more Opium.
Instead, she tries to kill him only to be stopped from doing so and he knocks her out when he hears that Kenshin and Sanosuke arrived and are fighting through the guards.
Shocked at this, Takeda reveals that he is willing to pay for people to kill those who invade his property and asks what is wrong with them.
As the fight continues, he drags Megumi off and throws her to his office floor and is in disbelief that the Battousai is fighting against him.
Desperate, he orders Megumi to be taken away while he declares it to be killed or be killed. However, by the time Kenshin reaches him, the man dragging Megumi never succeeds in his order.
As Sanosuke rejoins the search, Takeda Kanryū resorts to a gattling gun against him and Kenshin, with an officer's advice and the police coming soon, the duo feign surrender, with Kenshin putting down his katana, in order to have a shot at taking down Takeda.
The duo proceed to evade his firing as the officer cuts down a chandelier to get the upper hand on Takeda by holing him at sword point while Kenshin breaks his glasses with his sword. Soon, Takeda Kanryū is taken into custody as he vows revenge on his defeat despite his money.
