Kanyu was beaten by Kenshin, arrested, and sentenced to death for his crimes.
Hokkaido Arc[]
A search was made for Gatou whose name was suspected to be fake. Kenshin comes into the search and finds himself face to face with his old foe Takeda Kanryū, who was Gatou the whole time, much to each other's surprise. Takeda earlier managed to escape from Kobato Prison after his defeat alongside several other prisoners.
When offered a sword following his escape, he declines proclaiming that he is a merchant not a begger. Having gone into hiding, he made a vow that he cannot sell opium or firearms illegally and vows to evade the law. When punched, he explains that that it legal to buy swords like firearms. He also defends his jail break as being part of an evacuation from the prison's destruction. However, he gets punched again due to how trouble the people of Otaru felt from the spreading of swords.
Takeda is also told not to manipulate both sides for money again. Takeda was offered a deal not to have his connection to the Gatou swords revealed or his escape from prison revealed if he followed a plan. Takeda also acknowledges that Aran is right about merchants having a selfless vice of devotion. Aran explains that he is in no mood to be like Takeda.
Takeda remarks on Aran's flair for business, but the latter was unwilling to let Takeda be his teacher and proclaims that he is not like him. He even explains that their similar taste in clothes is coincidental. When Takeda talks about various things that cannot be bought with money and how it makes everything in the world fair and equal in the world, Kenshin proceeds to angrily ask about the Gatou gun that was used in town. Aran quickly explains that he does not believe Takeda was the seller of the gun.
Takeda suspects that it was the work of a black hooded fellow shortly before a hostile man breaks down the wall. Kenshin explains to him that he does not tolerate the killing others and vows not to let the hooded man kill anyone.
Kenshin explains to Sanosuke that he is heading back into town. Aran and Takeda proceed to make a run for it with the latter lamenting that chasing someone craving for money is not fun. It is soon discovered that the yakuza has been using these guns when Kenkaku Heiki supplied them.
Takeda and Aran manage to catch up with Kenshin and exclaims that he was furious at the Gatou brand the merchant created was stolen and used as it pleased the Kenkaku Heiki. This was something Takeda could not forgive.
He also asks Aran to use his intellect to locate the Kenkaku Heiki. Takeda explains that modern-day firearms, which were evolving, cannot be manufactured so easily and acknowledges that Kenshin is no good with guns.
Soon Aran does some inspection and finds an Eso Spruce Cone and explains that it comes from an evergreen tree that only grows in Hokkaido. It also is discovered that the Katsunal River was used to smuggle the guns. It also is discovered that Takeda was along the river when he crossed paths with the Kenkaku Heiki and there might be a base.
As the rapport between Takeda and Aran develops, they proceed to hunt down the base. After witnessing an attack on a town via the guns, Kenshin heads off for the Kenkaku Heiki, but Takeda believes he can do better than that.
Eventually they reach the Kenkaku Heiki's Otaru base where they witness cargo being unloaded and the crates were bigger and longer than the ones found with the pistols contained at the Shuei Compound. Takeda insists on going in to stop this madness.
He will not tolerate the crest he made becoming their crest as he acknoledges that only the Gatou Swords can be legally sold. He also calls the operation to seize the weapons a case of give and take with a promise to pay Aran and their partner, Ashitarou Hasegawa, who had been with them.
Ashitarou faces the men placed in charge of the smuggling while Aran and Takeda rush across the bridge while those men were distracted. The duo proceed to hold the man leading the operation there at gunpoint, having been infuriated with his crest being used without permission.
However, Takeda gets jabbed in the arm with the pin by the man who turns out ot be able to use writing to create bladed weapons. Trying to survive, Aran exclaims that Takeda's manners are not going to make money the most fair and equal thing in the world and vows to earn his money and use it for the positive aspects of modernization.
They proceed to make a run for it with Aran holding a barrel of gunpowder infront of the assailant which he and Kanryu pour over. When Kenshin arrives with Ashitarou, Aran screams for teh latter to draw his weapon at full force, leading to an explosion which forced Aran and Takeda to hide in a tent when the explosian happened.
Takeda assures Aran that Ashitarou was okay with the blonde guy acknowledging he was soaked in water and had a sturdy body. Aran explains to Kanryu that he is not running with the latter not retreating until he retrieves the Gatou crest and name that were stolen from him. When looking for a weapon to use against the enraged man, they've found that a massive crate that they've discovered survived the explosion.
When Kenshin, who also survived, confronts the smuggler, Takeda and Aran scream for him to move out of the way as they've been armed with a gattling gun that was in the crate. Takeda proceeds to fire the gun while Aran does the loading. Ultimately, Takeda spared the man as he needed him alive for it to be written.
Takeda decides that he will not use the gun again whenever it is illegal and that there were many things money cannot buy.
