Talon is the main antagonist in the 2015 DC animated film Batman vs. Robin. The latest in a long line of master assassins employed by the mysterious Court of Owls, Talon came to Gotham hoping to recruit Damian Wayne to be his successor.

He was voiced by Jeremy Sisto, who also voiced King Runeard in Frozen II.

Biography[]

Background[]

Talon was the son or ward of a professional thief, but after tiring of his lack of care and constant abuse, he betrayed him to the police, which caused the thief's death. After being a street urchin, the Vanaver family - the rulers of the Court of Owls- adopted him and trained him to be their future general. Talon met the Vanaver daughter, Samantha, as children; when they became adults, their relationship became sexual, although secret from the Court due to their classist, elitist perspectives.

Batman vs. Robin[]

During Samantha's reign as Grandmaster of the Court, she directed Talon to recruit Robin, as to undermine the Batman, and use the boy as a replacement as an undead general of the Court's undead army.

When Robin had seemingly subdued the serial child abductor and killer, the Dollmaker, he turned his back on him giving Dollmaker the opportunity to grab a log in preparation to attack, but he had his heart ripped out his back by Talon. Robin was shocked, yet the assassin told him to not doubt his instincts before vanishing into the woods. By murdering Dollmaker, Talon exploited instability in Batman and Robin's bond, as Batman's rigid non-killing rule made him doubt Robin, who was raised by the League of Assassins for 10 years.

Talon and Robin work together to tackle crime bosses in Gotham over three nights, yet every time Robin refused to kill, which Talon called Batman's "weakness infecting" him. Despite this, Robin had a falling out with Batman, so agreed to accompany Talon to the Court of Owls headquarters. When Robin unmasks, the Grandmaster recognised him as Damian Wayne, son of Bruce, since she was in a faux relationship with him, therefore exposing Batman's identity to the Court.

A cage trapped Damian before he could argue; while he was suspicious of Talon before, he didn't expect he was going to be betrayed. The Grandmaster orders Talon to execute Damian as to destroy Batman's spirit, however, Talon countered that the boy was meant to be replace him as the undead general; yet the Grandmaster opted to find another option just to take the opportunity to ruin Batman.

When Talon was about to kill Damian, he saw his abused childhood self in the boy, so instead begins a massacre of the Court. The Grandmaster pleaded to Talon, using their relationship as proof of her loyalty, but Talon stabbed her through her heart, killing Samantha Vanaver and unintentionally ending her family's corruption. After Talon completed his purge of the Court, he claims to Robin that he did it "for" him, but Robin rejected his assertion as insanity. Nevertheless, Talon wanted to keep Robin as his son, but understood that it can't happen while Batman is alive, therefore he trapped Robin in an empty undead cell.

Talon awakened the undead Talons, leading them in an assault against Wayne Manor. Batman and Nightwing fight and disable numerous Talons, but are forced underground into the Batcave. The Talons burst in, attacking Nightwing, and hurting him enough to stop him from moving, while Batman pilots a mech that easily squashed numerous members of the undead. As Robin had broken out of the containment cell, he arrived to tell Alfred that the Talons can't survive freezing temperatures; Alfred activated chilling from the vents, which froze all of the remaining Talons.

The human Talon personally drove the Batmobile into the Batmech, knocking both to the ground below, which injured but doesn't stop Batman. While the fight is even, Batman's injuries catch up with him, so Talon beats him down. Before Talon can kill him, Robin intercepted, forcing them into combat, with Talon accusing Robin of being "ungrateful." Robin bested Talon, holding him back at the tip of the sai Talon himself gave him. Out of spite, Talon gripped Robin's wrist, and forced the boy to kill him with the sai, much to Robin's horror.

Talon's mission to recruit Robin for the Court and subsequent psychotic desire to adopt him both failed, and regardless of the wedge he exploited, ultimately Bruce was able to learn how to trust and respect Damian, thereby repairing the bond between father and son.

Trivia[]

Though this Talon's appearance and backstory mesh together elements from several characters who shared said identity in the comics, his plan to recruit Damian Wayne as an apprentice, convince him to employ lethal force as a crime fighter, and manipulate him into turning against Batman is lifted from Nobody, the main villain from the first arc of Peter Tomasi's Batman and Robin (2011).
In Batman: Bad Blood, Robin ultimately discarded Talon's sai by tossing it into the barrel of Black Mask's grenade launcher, causing it to misfire, burning his mask to fuse onto his head, and destroying the sai, thus Robin dismissed any connection Talon had tried to force upon him.
