~ Tama's speech to the building occupants. |
Tama Riyadi is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Wahyu) of the 2011 film The Raid: Redemption, the first installment in The Raid film series.
In his characterisation, Tama was a ruthless drug lord and a major influence of the Jakarta criminal underworld. Corrupt police lieutenant Lieutenant Wahyu mobilized an elite police unit in an attempt to capture Tama under the pretext of putting an end to Tama's criminal activities. In reality, the real reason for the raid was that Tama was aware of Wahyu's corrupt dealings with his former employer Reza. In a further twist, it is eventually revealed that Tama in turn had conspired with Reza to kill Wahyu - with the entire team of officers as collateral damage.
He was potrayed by the late Ray Sahetapy
History[]
Tama Riyadi is one of the notorious crime bosses in Indonesia. He owns the apartment building in which the raid takes place. His subordinates worked there and rented rooms under his protection. The Indonesian SWAT officers led by Lieutenant Wahyu are sent on a mission to capture Tama, but the mission turns out to be based on false pretences and the officers find themselves trapped in the apartment complex, victims of a convoluted and corrupt setup.
It was then Tama's criminal activities led to police Lieutenant Wahyu to be seemingly authorized by his superiors with apprehending him. Wahyu then mobilized an elite police unit led by Sergeant Jaka to assist him with arresting Tama for his crimes. However, Tama soon learned about their arrival and summoned his gang to eliminate them. This consequently led to the deaths of nearly every officer in the building, which included Jaka's two unit members Alee and Hanggi as well as their drivers. Soon enough only Wahyu and Jaka remained alive along with SWAT Rama and his fellow comrades, Bowo and Dagu respectively.
As the SWAT unit split up to devise a counterattack plan, Tama sent his right-hand man Mad Dog and the Machete Leader to lead the gang in hunting down the remaining officers. Tama's second-in-command Andi was also sent to help, but little did Tama know that Andi was actually Rama's brother and their encounter would lead Tama to discover their releation on CCTV camera; Andi then betrays Tama by not killing Rama when he had the opportunity. This happens after Rama gets Bowo to safety and kills the Machete Leader along with his forces, but at the same time Mad Dog succeeds in killing Jaka no sooner after Wahyu and Dagu are able to flee from the pursuing gang members.
Later on, both Mad Dog and Andi see Tama to report on the situation. Tama then confronts Andi and stabs his hand to reveal his knowledge of the latter's betrayal, after which he orders Mad Dog to torture and kill Andi in retaliation. However, Rama ends up rescuing Andi and the two work together in killing Mad Dog after a long and brutal fight. Coincidentally, Wahyu and Dagu manage to kill past Tama's remaining forces before confronting Tama at gunpoint. Wahyu has Dagu arrest Tama, only to then betray Dagu by shooting him dead and then taking Tama hostage with the intention of escaping.
However, before Wahyu can escape with Tama as his hostage, they encounter Rama and Andi as they rush to confront him. Wahyu fires a shot at Rama and reveals his betrayal before explaining his plan to escape. Tama then proceeds to taunt Wahyu and reveals not only his awareness of Wahyu's corrupt activities, but the fact that Tama himself is working for Wahyu's employer Reza. It was then Tama discloses that Reza had betrayed Wahyu by ordering Tama to kill him in the raid, thus confirming that Jaka and the rest of the fallen SWAT comrades were all collateral damage. Wahyu then shoots Tama in the head, killing him. Shortly after Tama's death, Wahyu attempts suicide but fails as he has no bullets left; this allows Rama to arrest Wahyu and leave with Bowo with the help from Andi himself.
In the sequel, it is revealed Tama had been affiliated with gang boss Bejo and was formerly associated with the city's gangland kingpin Bangun as well.
Trivia[]
- The Raid director Gareth Evans wanted a non-stereotypical take on the character Tama Riyadi, citing most gangster films wherein the boss is usually wearing a pristine suit and smoking cigars.
