Tamerlane Usher is a supporting antagonist in the 2023 gothic horror series The Fall of the House of Usher.
She is the second-eldest child of Roderick Usher, and the CEO of "Goldbug", a lifestyle company. Her true, selfish and controlling nature is revealed behind this façade of perfection.
She is portrayed by Samantha Sloyan, who also portrayed Bev Keane in Midnight Mass.
Personality[]
Tamerlane evidently suffers from anxiety in her marriage. Under immense pressure to maintain good PR for herself and her family, she has grown weary and unhappy in life. Due to her brother's lack of ambition, Tamerlane likely felt a sense of duty to succeed and continue her family's legacy. As such, she is never satisfied with herself or her husband. She became majorly invested in cuckquean fetishes with her husband (despite the fact he does not enjoy them). As Tamerlane spirals, her self-critical and selfish tendencies are highlighted. She also suffered from narcolespy.
Biography[]
Background[]
On New Year's Eve 1980, Tamerlane's father and aunt, Madeline Usher, made a deal with Verna guaranteeing them both unparalleled power and wealth. However, the deal was subject to the condition that any bloodline created by Roderick or Madeline would die early, but also share in their power. Despite this, due to Verna's suspiciousness, Madeline and Roderick struggle to believe their deal was legitimate, and ignore it.
Roderick later parented Frederick Usher and Tamerlane with his wife, Anna Lee. Whilst Frederick hadn't amounted to anything in his adulthood, Tamerlane became the face of a major lifestyle corporation that produced "Gold-Bugs", tailored packages for beauty and healthcare. Tamerlane later married Bill Wilson, a fitness coach.
Tamerlane's pressures continued to build, which led her to feel deeply unsatisfied in every aspect of her life. To combat this in her marriage, Tamerlane forced Bill to engage in cuckquean fetishes, which included Tamerlane watching her husband have dinner with escorts who came dressed as Tamerlane, despite Bill's clear assertions he does not enjoy it.
The Fall of the House of Usher[]
Tamerlane's narcolepsy and perversions worsen, which leads to their separation. Despite the psychological stress she faces, Tamerlane steadfastly agrees to attend the launch of her new care packages. She experiences increasing bouts of narcolepsy and begins to lose her stability. She attends the press conference which starts off fairly well.
However, she begins to hallucinate Verna dressed as Tamerlane in the audience, which throws her off. She then shouts into the audience at her hallucination (which is where her stepmother is sat). When she hallucinates a sex tape of Tamerlane and Bill's cuckquean sex life being broadcast on the screen behind her, she has a breakdown and throws a microphone stand at the hallucination, which hits her stepmother.
Madeline, who attends the conference, spies Verna in the crowd. When she confronts her, she dissipates into smoke. Tamerlane returns home and sees Verna in the corner of her eye. Tamerlane arms herself with a fire poker and begins swinging at the air. She believes she sees Verna and swings, but this is revealed just to be a mirror. This continues until all the mirrors in her house are destroyed. Thinking she is finally at peace, she then sees Verna in the mirrored ceiling above her marital bed. Tamerlane jumps into the air and hits the mirror, which shatters, impaling Tamerlane numerous times, and leaving Frederick the sole heir of the Usher fortune.
When Roderick tells the story of his children's deaths to August, a US state investigator, Tamerlane's body appears in a vision and haunts him.
Trivia[]
- Tamerlane's namesake comes from Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name.
- The poem tells of Tamerlane, a 14th Century warlord who sought to exchange "a kingdom for a broken heart". This could refer to Tamerlane's desire to create a successful brand despite her broken heart and dissatisfaction in marriage and life.
