Tanith, Volcano Manor Proprietress is an NPC character who appears in the 2022 dark fantasy video game Elden Ring. She is the loyal consort of the demigod Praetor Rykard and is the leader of the Recusants, a group of Tarnished who rebelled against the Golden Order and who made a vow to kill their own kind.
Tanith is voiced by Gemma Whelan, who voiced Solaria Butterfly in the Star vs. the Forces of Evil series and portrayed Yara Greyjoy in the Game of Thrones TV series.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Tanith, prior to becoming the proprietress of Volcano manor, originally worked as a dancer in a foreign land until she was met by Rykard. Having become charmed by him when he swore himself to blasphemy, she soon became his consort and his greatest supporter, remaining by his side even after Rykard had merged with the god-devouring serpent. Though Rykard offered her a tonic of forgetfulness, as she might become distressful over remembering him, Tanith refused to imbibe it. At some point, she became the adoptive mother of Rya the Scout, a man-serpent who was born through a repelling birthing ritual, though her real name is Zorayas. Growing up, Rya believed Tanith is her true mother, though they are not related in reality. Despite this, Tanith cares for Rya.
Recent History[]
Tanith is encountered in the entrance chamber of Volcano Manor. She is accompanied by a crucible knight, who acts as her bodyguard. When a lowly Tarnished, the protagonist of the game, encounters her, she would give them the offer of joining the Recusants. If the Tarnished accepts the offer, she will task them with killing several Tarnished. Once this is accomplished, Tanith will divulge the truth on Volcano Manor and Praetor Rykard. After the latter is slain at the Tarnished's hands, Tanith, upon learning of Rykard's death will thank them, as their victory gave proof that her lord is yet to be weak. However, she states that Rykard is immortal and will one day rise again but this time stronger and that she must stay on the path and do her part. She announced that she will leave Volcano Manor and bids farewell to the Tarnished but suggests that they might meet again.
Death[]
When the Tarnished returns to where they fought Rykard, they found Tanith devouring the remains of her fallen lord, as she wished to become his serpent and his family so that they may devour the gods together one day. Thus, this reveals that her intention of leaving Volcano Manor is false and all a lie. The Tarnished is given the option to kill her. If she dies at their hands, her last words will be, "Ahh, my lord... Rykard...". If her corpse is looted, then the Tarnished will be given the full Consort's Set.
